Subject Zero: Faceless

Morning came up gray over the forward camp, the kind of light that made canvas and mud the same color. By the time he was steady enough to stand without the tent pole, the camp had started coming apart around him, tent poles down, crates stacked for the trucks, the whole temporary shape of the position folding itself back into something portable for the day’s haul back to the Ninth Front. Third Squad’s section of it moved slower than the rest. Nobody had told them to take it easy. They just were.

He noticed the room people gave him before he understood what it meant. A private he didn’t know stepped wide around a stacked crate rather than pass close to him with it. Two runners crossing the mud path angled their route without seeming to decide to. It was the space people made for something they’d just been told, officially, mattered more than they’d thought it did the day before.

A number changes and the ground under everyone’s feet changes with it, and nobody has to say why out loud.

Lieutenant Osei passed him near the fuel cans and gave him a single nod, level, unreadable, the same nod she’d have given any soldier under her whose file had just been rewritten above her head without her input — and then, unlike herself, stopped.

”Eleven out,” she said. ”Ten back. One of the ten I had to count twice, because for about a minute in that clearing I wasn’t sure which column you belonged in.” She let that stand as long as it needed to. ”I’ve written it up as ten. Don’t make me revise it.”

She moved on before he could reach for the slate, which was, he suspected, the point. He wrote it anyway, after she’d gone, to the fuel cans — I’ll try not to — because the sentence needed finishing somewhere, and she’d have known that too.

Ferro found him twenty minutes later, alone this time, no data slate, no Renner at his shoulder. He’d changed since the tent, cleaner uniform, the stillness of an officer between one piece of business and the next.

”A runner came through from Corps an hour ago,” he said. ”Ahead of the column, ahead of the readout even reaching Marrow’s desk through channels. Somebody up there moves fast when they want to.” He held out a folded order, waited for him to take it rather than reading it to him. ”You’re not reporting to Ninth Actual when we get back. You’re reporting to Colonel Marrow directly. His office specifically requested it, and specifically requested it be him and not whoever he’d normally hand it to.”

He isn’t posted to the Ninth Front.

”He is now. Took a room in the administration block when the Corvale authorization went through, and he isn’t leaving it until the review closes. Corps doesn’t send a colonel forward to sit in a borrowed office unless the sitting is the point.”

Why him. Why now.

”I don’t know yet.” Ferro said it in the same register he’d used in the aid tent. ”Marrow’s had an open question about you sitting on his desk since your first mission. A Class II confirmation with a reliability flag attached is the kind of thing that makes a man like that decide it’s time to close a question he’s been sitting on for a while.” He folded his arms. ”I’d tell you not to worry about it if I thought you’d believe me, and if I believed it myself.”

The Ninth Front’s main post looked as he’d left it, same gravel yard, same rows of Quonset huts, same flagpole standing a little crooked at the base, and looked entirely different anyway. Third Squad came off the trucks to a small knot of off-duty personnel who’d gathered by the motor pool for no announced reason, watching the column unload with the attention people paid to something they’d only heard about secondhand.

They’re not looking at Hollis. Or Wren. Or the trucks.

Wren caught the direction of it too, hefted her pack onto one shoulder, and didn’t comment beyond a short, dry exhale that passed for commentary anyway.

Third Squad broke apart faster than he’d expected, once the trucks were unloaded. Osei peeled off toward the operations block with a stack of after-action paperwork under one arm and gave him a nod on her way past, the same level nod from the Ninth Front’s aid tent, unchanged by the change of location. Ilsen and Cade went to draw new billets. Hollis lingered by the truck a moment longer than the others, adjusting the sling one-handed, and when he turned to face the mask he didn’t look away first — no dialogue, just the held look, which by the standard the two of them had set at the Ninth Front already counted as a great deal.

Renner’s operators had gone out on a different truck before dawn, the wounded pair included, without anyone from Third Squad seeing them go, Corps Intelligence’s people, back to Corps Intelligence’s places. The only remaining evidence that they’d shared a column was the gap where a scout used to walk. Doss’s name wasn’t spoken by anyone in the yard, not once. Ashfall-Zero noticed its absence anyway, a specific shape where something used to be.

The formal recognition happened two days later, in the same gravel yard, Third Squad and the rest of the column standing in loose ranks while a staff officer neither of them had met read a citation for the Corvale operation off a printed sheet, casualties acknowledged by name, Doss included — Osei’s hand lifting a fraction at the sound of it, the crossing-count reflex, and coming down — the objective’s destruction confirmed, four prisoners recovered for debrief. It was shorter than he’d expected, and drier, and it named no one individually until the very end, when the officer read a separate line reserved for ”the operation’s Class II asset” without using his name, and moved on to dismiss the formation before anyone had time to react to the omission or to what it replaced.

A designation instead of a name, read out loud to everyone who was there to hear either one.

Nobody in the ranks turned to look at him when the line was read, a discipline he recognized, the effort of soldiers deliberately not doing the thing their curiosity wanted, because someone senior enough to matter was standing close enough to notice if they did. Only Wren, three ranks over, let her eyes cut briefly sideways before the formation was dismissed, and looked away again just as fast.

Ferro found him afterward, alone, in the thinning crowd. ”That’s protocol,” he said, before he’d asked. ”A citation names people. A Class II asset with an open reliability flag doesn’t get a name on that specific document yet. Using it there would create a paper trail somebody at Corps hasn’t decided whether they want to exist.” He said it in the same register he’d used delivering the Marrow order two days before. ”I’d have told you in advance if I’d thought it would help. I don’t think advance warning would have made it land any softer.”

It didn’t need to land softer. I needed to know why.

”Now you do.” He nodded once toward the administration block. ”He’s expecting you in twenty minutes. I’m not coming with you this time.”

Colonel Marrow had taken a room in the administration block for the duration of the review, a borrowed office, map wall, two chairs, a desk with nothing on it, and Ashfall-Zero found himself noting, before he could stop himself from caring that he had, that the last desk he’d sat across from Marrow at had held a wooden bird between them, and this one held nothing. Marrow didn’t stand when he entered, and didn’t waste time getting to it either.

”I’ve read Renner’s readout, Reyes’s assessment, and Major Ferro’s account of the recognition formation twice each,” Marrow said. ”I’ve also read Renner’s deviation report from Corvale, the one about the prisoner you refused to kill, which landed on my desk the same week as the Grade confirmation, which is either an administrative coincidence or isn’t, and I haven’t decided which yet.” He folded his hands on the desk. ”Two files. One says you’re the most reliable asset on this front. The other says you’ll refuse a lawful order the moment it costs something you’ve decided matters more. Both of those are true at once, and I don’t currently have a category for a subject where both are true at once.”

You said closer observation was the only trust you had room to extend. Is there room for anything else now.

”No. I told you, across a different table, that closer observation was the only version of trust I had room to extend, and I meant it. I want you to hear this the way I told you that. I no longer have room to extend even that. Not because you’ve done anything to lose it — Corvale is, on every metric Corps actually tracks, the single best outcome any asset attached to this front has delivered all year. Because a Class II confirmation with an open reliability flag isn’t a subject anymore. It’s a resource with a number on it, and a number gets managed, not trusted, however much either of us would rather it were the other thing.” He didn’t look away, and for the first time since the debrief, something in his expression read like a man saying something he didn’t especially want to be the one saying. ”That’s not punishment. It’s what the file requires of me now, whatever I might have wanted it to say instead.”

What does ’managed’ mean, specifically.

”It means every mission you’re tasked to from this point goes through my office first, personally, not Ferro’s or Renner’s — I’m not delegating a Class II reliability flag to anyone else’s judgment while it’s still open. It means the deviation report doesn’t disappear just because the mission it came from succeeded; it sits on file, permanently, next to the Grade confirmation, and the next time you refuse an order, that pairing is what a review board reads before it reads anything else.” He stood, finally, and it didn’t make the room feel any less like his. ”And it means the political ground under you has shifted in a way you’re going to feel long before Corps tells you the shape of it officially. You proved something at Corvale nobody on this front can un-know now. Command doesn’t leave that kind of proof alone. It builds a policy around it.”

He didn’t reach for the slate. Some answers took longer to arrive than the room waiting for them would allow, and he let this one sit unwritten rather than force a version of it that fit on a single line — a silence Marrow, for once, didn’t seem to expect him to fill.

”Dismissed,” Marrow said, and turned back to the map wall before the word had finished landing, moving on to whatever came after this conversation in a day that clearly held several more like it.

Ashfall-Zero left the office into a base that looked as he’d left it, and understood, walking back across the same crooked-flagpole yard, exactly which one of them had actually changed while he was gone, the base had simply gone on looking the same regardless.

A runner caught up with him halfway across it — not one of Ferro’s, by the patch; Corps Intelligence — and handed him a sealed message sleeve with his designation printed on it and no sender line. Inside, a single sheet, handwritten, unsigned except for an initial.

The deviation report carries two names. Mine goes in front of a directorate review board next month — ”judgment exercised contrary to tasking guidance.” Learn the phrase; it now lives in both our files. I stand by the recommendation I logged, and I’d place the bet again, and I still think I was right about the odds. If Corps ever lets me near you a second time, we can argue about it properly. — R.

He read it twice, folded it along her crease, and put it in the kit pocket that held the wooden bird, the two things he’d carry off this front that no readout would ever list, riding together.
