Subject Zero: Faceless

The operations tent was three times the size of Ferro’s command post, and by oh-eight-hundred it was full enough that Third Squad had to stand along the back wall with two other units he didn’t recognize. Nobody had told him the push would need this many people. He recalibrated the number now, watching the room fill, and found the old habit of quiet arithmetic still worked the same as it had in the Foundry: count what’s in front of you, assume the real number is larger.

Unfamiliar patches moved past him on their way to open floor space — a heavy-weapons team hauling a crated support gun between two soldiers, a pair of medics setting a stretcher-frame down against the tent wall like furniture nobody wanted to think too hard about, a scout element arguing quietly over a hand-drawn sketch of ground the projection hadn’t rendered yet. This was not a squad-sized operation. Third Squad, filing in behind Osei, took up perhaps a tenth of the room.

Osei found a gap along the canvas wall and planted herself in it without ceremony. Ilsen and Wren fell in beside her. Hollis took the far end of the same wall, close enough to be part of the squad, far enough to not have to stand next to him.

At the center of the tent, a waist-high table glowed faintly blue — a Core-lit terrain projection, contour lines rendered in light above a hard floor of packed dirt and folded maps nobody was using anymore. Ferro stood over it with two staff officers Third Squad hadn’t met and didn’t get introduced to.

”Two days,” Ferro said, and the tent went quiet around the word — the particular hush that gathers around a countdown. ”Some of you already knew that. Everyone does now.”

The projection resolved as he spoke — a river valley, a supply road running along one bank, and above it, a long spine of high ground the light rendered in a harder blue than the rest.

The ridge. He recognized the shape of it before Ferro named it — the same slope Third Squad had climbed two nights ago, the same shelf of rock he’d shared with Wren for three uneventful hours.

”Aldern Ridge,” Ferro said, confirming it. ”You had eyes on the road under it two nights back. Nothing came down it worth shooting at, which is exactly the problem. The enemy’s using that quiet to move supply at night, up the ridge’s blind side, into a position dug in well enough that we can’t touch it with artillery without flattening half the valley along with it.”

He tapped the light, and the ridge’s far slope bloomed with a cluster of red marks — dug emplacements, too many to count individually at this range.

”The push takes the ridge. Not the road — the ridge itself. Once we hold the high ground, the road stops being useful to anyone but us, and the position on the far slope stops being defensible from below. That’s the whole operation in one sentence. Everything else is how many ways it can go wrong between now and then.”

A staff officer took over the terrain table, walking through timing, approach routes, the units assigned to each — names and numbers that meant little to him yet, squads and callsigns he hadn’t learned. The plan itself was built in phases: a night insertion below the ridgeline while the enemy’s attention stayed fixed on the supply road below it, a silent clearing of whatever forward positions they’d dug into the near slope, and then, only once the ridge’s crest was actually held, a signal back down to the main force staged at the valley floor. Nothing about the timeline left room for a phase running long. He listened anyway, filing what he could — the same reflex that had once tracked a Foundry researcher’s schedule without knowing which parts of it would matter later.

Third Squad’s role, when it came, was almost an afterthought in the briefing’s structure and nothing like one in its stakes: forward element, first up the ridge’s near face, tasked with clearing a listening post of their own — the enemy’s version of the one they’d manned two nights ago — before the main push could move without being seen doing it.

”Same ridge,” Osei murmured beside him, not quite to herself. ”Different direction.”

Ilsen’s jaw tightened, just slightly, at the words first up. He said nothing about it, and neither did Wren, though her hand found the strap of her rifle and adjusted it once, unnecessarily — a plan turning personal, in miniature. Third Squad wasn’t just attached to this operation anymore. It was the operation’s opening move — the first bodies on the slope, before anyone knew whether the ridge’s near face held anything worse than an empty listening post.

Ferro closed the terrain projection with one short, decisive motion and looked up at the room for the first time since he’d started. Whatever came next, he’d clearly decided how to phrase it.

”I’m going to say one more thing, and I want it heard by everyone in this tent, not just the units carrying it.” He didn’t look at Ashfall-Zero specifically. He didn’t need to; enough of the room had. ”Corps has been asking questions since yesterday’s field assessment went up the chain. An anomalous Calibration reading on an unclassified asset, fielded on an operation this size, four days after arrival — that’s not a note in a file anymore. That’s a full colonel at Corps asking me in writing why I haven’t pulled him back to observation status until someone can tell him what he actually is.”

The tent didn’t move. Nobody looked at him directly. He’d learned, by now, that avoidance could watch just as closely as attention did.

”I told Corps the same thing I told him on his first night here. I don’t have a week to find out what he is. I have two days and a ridge, and I intend to use both.” Ferro closed the projection fully, the blue light collapsing to nothing between his hands. ”But I want everyone in this room understanding the same thing I do: this push isn’t just going to decide whether we hold Aldern Ridge. It’s going to decide whether Corps lets me keep fielding him at all, or whether the next order that comes down puts him somewhere with four walls and a supervisor instead of a rifle.”

The Sight, uninvited, read what sat underneath Ferro’s flat delivery — not the calm the man’s voice was performing for the room, but something closer to a bet placed and not yet called. Ferro believed what he’d said about needing two days and a ridge more than he needed a week. He also understood, clearly, how much of his own standing at Corps he’d spent making that call before this morning’s briefing had even started.

He held up the slate before Ferro had finished turning away, and the movement was enough to make the major stop.

You’re telling me this in front of the room. Not privately, after.

”I am.” Ferro didn’t soften it. ”Because you needed to hear it like everyone standing here just did — not softer, not later, not from someone easing you into it. You’re not just being sent up that ridge. You’re being tested on it, in front of people whose opinion decides what happens to you next, and I’d rather you go up there knowing that than find it out afterward from how command talks about you.”

And if I fail the test.

”Then Corps gets its colonel his supervisor, and I lose a rifle I was counting on for the real fight after this one.” Ferro said it without softening that either. ”I’d rather not lose either. That’s the only reason we’re having this conversation instead of me just handing you an assignment and leaving you to learn the stakes on your own, after the fact, like most of this command still does.”

Osei shifted beside him, arms crossed, watching the exchange with the same flat attention she gave a hand signal she was waiting to see repeated back correctly. Hollis, at the far end of the wall, hadn’t moved at all — but he was watching now, in a way he hadn’t been a minute ago.

Understood.

”Good.” Ferro finally looked away, back toward the staff officers and the next unit’s assignment, three sentences into a different conversation before the tent had fully absorbed the last one. ”Dismissed to your squad leads for particulars. Two days.”

Osei gathered them outside the tent before anyone could scatter, and ran through the squad-level particulars in the same brisk register she’d used two nights ago briefing hand signals: full kit by first light tomorrow, one live rehearsal of the near-slope approach in daylight while there was still daylight to spare, and a hard muster time the morning of that she repeated twice, watching each face in turn to be sure it landed. Nobody wrote anything down. Nobody needed to.

Wren fell into step near the back, quiet for once. Hollis said nothing at all, which from him had started to read less like hostility and more like a man doing arithmetic of his own — the same silence he’d worn climbing the ridge two nights ago, before any of this had a name.

He turned Ferro’s sentence over once more before they reached the barracks row. Tested on it, in front of people whose opinion decides what happens to you next. He had been tested before — the demonstration chamber, the review board, the colonel’s slate and its patient, unforgiving questions. Every one of those tests had happened behind a closed door, decided by people he never had to watch decide it.

This one would happen on a ridge, in the open, in front of a squad that hadn’t decided about him yet either.
