Subject Zero: Faceless

Making extraction had turned out to mean reaching the coordinates, not leaving them. The LZ was a burned-out clearing four hundred meters past the relief force’s leading edge, transport eleven minutes out by Renner’s last confirmed contact, and every one of those minutes was going to have to be bought with something.

Osei had the column in a loose perimeter around Hollis and the prisoners, Wren and Cade covering the approach, Ilsen working on a field dressing that had already soaked through twice. Ashfall-Zero knelt beside her, the cold behind his ribs and the newer ache behind his sternum both there from the strongpoints, both about to matter a great deal more than they did.

The contact from the tree line had a rhythm now, probing fire, a pause while somebody adjusted, probing fire again, each exchange a few seconds shorter than the last. Wren called the intervals in a low count without being asked to. Whoever was out there had stopped looking for the column and started fixing it in place, and fixing a thing in place was what you did when the rest of you hadn’t arrived yet.

Renner found them at a dead run, breathing hard for the first time all night. ”The charges are still live on a fifteen-minute timer. Nobody set them off early because we needed the building standing long enough to finish the interrogation. That was the trade, and I made it knowingly. If that relief force retakes the structure before the timer runs, they disarm it. Corvale keeps operating. Doss died and Hollis bled for nothing we can point to except four names on a prisoner manifest.”

How long do the charges need.

”Nine minutes. Maybe eleven, worst case.” She looked past him at the tree line, where the relief force’s advance had gone from scattered contact to something more organized in the last ninety seconds. ”We don’t have nine minutes of line to hold with what’s left standing on two feet. Osei’s told me the same thing without saying it out loud.”

Osei said it out loud instead. ”I’m not ordering you to do anything,” she said, which was itself the clearest sign of how far past ordinary orders this had gone. ”Reyes’s own report says two, and even that came with a cost nobody wants to see twice in one night. You’ve already paid it twice tonight. I don’t know what a third one costs, and neither does anyone else standing in this clearing.”

Nobody’s tested it because nobody’s had to.

”That’s exactly the problem.” Osei kept her eyes level on the mask, same as every other time this front had asked something of him she couldn’t fully answer for. ”If I had a cleaner option I’d give it to you. I don’t. What I have is a wounded man, a nine-minute timer, and a tree line about to decide this for us if somebody doesn’t decide it first.”

Then I’ll decide it.

He stood up out of the perimeter’s crouch, and the squad’s fire shifted around him without a word — Cade and Wren widening their arcs to cover the lane he’d stopped holding, Osei’s voice moving the perimeter’s weight off him one name at a time. Nine people rearranged themselves around what he was about to do, trusting it before he did.

The tree line’s fire found him inside three seconds of his standing, rounds going past close enough to read. He registered them distantly, an argument happening in a language he’d stopped being addressed in.

There was no room left for the careful breath and narrowed attention Reyes had spent five days drilling into him, for the deliberate, patient drawing-down that had made the last two uses something closer to aimed than raw. He reached anyway, fast and desperate, and what answered came up like the first improvised pulse at Aldern Ridge’s shelf, wide, unshaped, indifferent to every careful edge he’d been taught to hold, except bigger than that too, bigger than anything that had come off him yet, because there was nothing left in reserve to keep it small.

It took the leading edge of the relief force’s advance, and the ground under it too, a churned, smoking scar cut clean across the tree line’s forward slope, and for three full seconds afterward nothing on that side of the clearing moved.

And it did not stop when the strike landed. Not a second pull, but the first one refusing to close, the door he’d learned to open swinging wide past every mark Reyes had taught him to hold it at, drawing on him after there was nothing volunteered left to draw.

Somewhere in that, a fact surfaced that he’d carried on his kit strap for weeks without once needing. The small grey weight of the suppression charge, clipped where Ferro had set it, keyed to an authorization a full night’s movement behind them. A discharge that wouldn’t close was the only reason it existed. And nobody in this clearing held the other end of it. If the door stayed open, it would stay open until whatever it was spending ran out, and the one instrument on earth designed to shut it was riding on his own chest, inert, waiting for a hand that was a valley and a ridge line away.

The last clear thing he owned of it was the understanding, arriving without panic, more like weather, that he was no longer the one holding the handle, and that no one else was either.

The cost arrived differently this time, no ringing first, no gradual whiteness creeping in from the edges to warn him it was coming. His legs went out from under him entirely, and the last thing he was aware of with any clarity was the ground coming up faster than it should have, and Wren’s hands catching him before it did.

Fragments came back out of order, over what felt like seconds and turned out to be most of a minute: Osei’s voice, sharp, calling something to Renner; the charges going off somewhere behind them, a concussion that rolled through the ground rather than the air; Ilsen’s hands doing something to his collar that he registered only as pressure, no pain attached to it yet; Hollis, of all people, saying his actual name aloud, plain and spoken, twice — not a report, not a formality, just a name said like it needed to land.

I’m here, he tried to write, and found his hand wouldn’t hold the slate steady enough to make the letters mean anything.

Wren took the slate out of his hand — not away from him; out of the fight his fingers were losing with it — and set it against his chest, under his palm, where holding it required nothing. ”Later,” she said, from somewhere above him and to the left. ”Nobody’s grading you on penmanship tonight.”

Above him the perimeter went on working. He could hear Osei redistributing what was left of it — names, arcs, the arithmetic of too few people covering ground that had wanted eleven all night — and understood, in the drifting fashion everything arrived now, that she had put herself into the lane he’d been holding. The count again. She was carrying the empty place herself this time. Nobody had asked her to.

The transport found them six minutes later, by which point the relief force that remained had pulled back rather than press an assault into ground that had just done what it did to the last one, and the Corvale relay was no longer a structure so much as a column of settling smoke and a great deal of very final silence where a coordination hub used to be.

They loaded Hollis first, then Ashfall-Zero, conscious again but not steady, the whiteness crowding the edges of everything he tried to look at directly. Wren rode with a hand on his shoulder the entire flight back, not speaking, which by now had become its own complete sentence between them.

Renner sat across from him, watching him with an expression he didn’t have the clarity left to read via anything but plain sight, no Ocular Bypass required. ”You bought us the timer,” she said, once the transport had leveled out and the adrenaline had nowhere left to burn but into exhaustion. ”The relay’s gone. Every man and woman on this transport is going home instead of dying in that clearing, including the four we’re bringing back for debrief instead of leaving on Corvale’s floor. Reyes is going to want everything you can remember about what that felt like, and I’m not sure you’re going to be able to give her much of it.”

I don’t remember most of it, he wrote, slower than usual, each letter costing something it hadn’t cost an hour ago. I remember deciding to. I don’t remember doing it.

”That’s going to be a problem for people whose job is writing down what you can and can’t be relied on to control.” Renner looked out at the dark terrain sliding past beneath them, the same unreadable calculation from the command tent settling back over her face now that the immediate crisis had passed. ”But that’s tomorrow’s problem. Tonight, the objective’s secured, at a cost every single person on this transport is going to remember the shape of.” She looked back at him once more before closing her eyes against the vibration of the airframe. ”Including you, whether you remember doing it or not.”

Ashfall-Zero let the slate rest against his knee, too spent to hold it up any longer, and watched the ridge line fall away below the transport’s window, Corvale burning somewhere behind them, the objective within reach and then behind it, as promised, and no clean way yet to know what reaching it had actually cost him until whatever he’d just done finished, slowly, telling him.
