Subject Zero: Faceless

Three of the seven days were gone, and the base had made efficient use of them.

The second guard at the checkpoint outside his corridor had become a fixture rather than a novelty by the first morning. By the second, a third had joined him at the door to what used to be an open stretch of yard between the barracks and the motor pool — a stretch he no longer had a route to that didn’t require a written request and a countersignature he had not yet tried to get approved. He hadn’t seen Voss since.

The Line had acquired a new rule to sit alongside the old one. Consent from the receiving party was no longer sufficient on its own — a request now had to pass through the colonel’s office first, logged and countersigned before it could even be attempted. He filled out the form for it on the second morning anyway, mostly to see what the form asked for. It asked for a reason. He wrote routine check-in because the truth — that he wanted to know whether the residual thread to the colonel’s mind was still there — was not a reason anyone in that office would have accepted on a printed line. The request sat on the corner of the table afterward, signed by no one, answered by no one, three days running.

A notice appeared on the wall slate outside his room on the morning of the third day. [LIBERTY PRIVILEGES SUSPENDED PENDING REVIEW. ESCORT MANDATORY FOR ALL MOVEMENT BEYOND DESIGNATED QUARTERS.] No motor pool, no yard, no version of the last two weeks he could walk back into even once the seven days ended.

The escort to the review annex took him the long way around the command wing, and the liaison arrived twenty minutes after he did, straight from a room she had clearly not been invited to sit down in.

”I’ve come from the brigadier,” she said, before she’d finished closing the door. ”You should hear this from me before it reaches you as a form. He’s requisitioned the composite file. All of it, through channels — he told the colonel as a courtesy, not a request. His stated reason is that if there’s a woman out there who can be found through Meridian’s own registries, he’d like to know who else might find her first, and what she’d be worth to them once they did.” She let that sit. ”I was in the room because my signature is on the intake for that file. Custodians get a chair. They don’t get a vote.”

And you said.

”That the file exists because a man chose, of his own consent, to let a stranger take his one private thing and hand it to an institution — and that using it as leverage instead of a search would prove every reason you ever had not to trust this place, with paperwork you signed yourself.” A breath. ”He said he wasn’t interested in your trust. He was interested in what you are, and where your loyalties will sit the day they’re tested. So I offered him something he was interested in.”

She sat, finally, on the edge of the annex’s one table, which told him more about the meeting than the account had.

”The brigadier gets his file. That was never in doubt. What changes is that my name goes on the access log alongside yours, and every request his office makes against that composite comes through me first, on record. Every time he touches it now, it comes back to me. If he uses it wrong, I’m the one who signed off on the door he walked through. The colonel called that not a small thing to offer. She was right, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise to make you feel better about it.”

Why.

”Because a file with only his name on the request log is a weapon nobody has to account for. A file with mine on it too is a weapon somebody has to look at me and justify using. I’d rather stand between you and that than be somewhere safer, watching it happen anyway.”

He held the stylus over the slate for a long moment and wrote nothing.

”There’s one more thing,” she said, and her tone shifted register entirely — administrative, a cadence she used for delivering something she hadn’t chosen the wording of. ”The review closes in four days. One part of it is already settled and coming regardless. You’re going to be given a designation.”

A name.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

”Not one you’d choose. A field designation — administrative, assigned, meant for a manifest, not chosen for a door. It replaces ’Subject Zero’ in every reference from here forward. Command wants a Foundry program name off its own paperwork before this goes any further up the chain than it already has.”

Because it looks better on a form than what I actually am.

”Because it looks better on a form than what several people in that building upstairs are currently worried you actually are. I want you to hear both of those reasons at once, because in a few days someone is going to hand you a much prettier version of this.”

Four days gone, three left, and he had stopped keeping the count for patience’s sake and started keeping it because it was the only number on this base that still moved forward on schedule.

The Line request lay where it had lain since the second morning. Overnight, someone had finally done something about it — not an answer, just a stamp beneath the blank line where one should have gone. REQUEST DENIED — INSUFFICIENT OPERATIONAL JUSTIFICATION.

A written order came for him a little before noon — a personnel-office stamp he hadn’t seen before, ordering him to Records Processing under standard escort.

Records Processing turned out to be a room with better lighting than anywhere else he’d been taken since the demonstration. A counter. A slate mounted flush in the wall behind it, dark. A man behind the counter in a uniform pressed sharper than the corporal’s.

The liaison was there, seated in the single chair against the side wall.

”Take a seat if you want one,” the officer said. ”This doesn’t take long, and there’s nothing in it that requires you standing.”

He sat.

”Effective today, Meridian is assigning you a provisional field designation,” the officer said, reading from a card rather than reciting it. ”It replaces Subject Zero in all administrative reference going forward. It is not a name. Nobody here is under the impression that it is a name. It’s a manifest entry, same as anyone else on this base has one.”

Say it.

”Ashfall-Zero.” The officer set the card down, faceup, so he could read it himself. It was smaller than he’d expected, plain gray stock, the two words printed in the same flat institutional type as everything else this base had ever handed him. ”Ashfall for the extraction operation that pulled you out of the site. Zero for—” He stopped himself, the first genuinely unrehearsed thing he’d done since the door opened. ”For the numeral that was in your file. We didn’t invent a new one. Command’s position is that scrubbing it entirely would read as covering something up rather than moving past it.”

The Foundry used Zero for a place in a sequence. What does Meridian use it for.

”Continuity,” the officer said, after a pause that lasted just long enough to make clear the word was standing in for an actual answer.

”They kept the number,” the liaison said, quiet, from the side wall. ”Not the program. There’s a difference, even if today it doesn’t feel like one from where you’re sitting.”

”You’ll be issued updated identification within the day,” the officer went on. ”Any correspondence addressed to Subject Zero after today gets flagged and routed to my desk before it reaches you. Command wants the old designation dead on paper, not just unused.”

He set the stylus down and looked at the card a while longer, at the two words sitting where eleven years of one word used to sit. He had been Subject Zero for longer than he could remember being anything else, and now he was Ashfall-Zero, and the only part of either name that had ever belonged to him outright was the second half of both.

”It won’t be the last thing you’re called,” the liaison said, once the officer had turned to another counter. ”This one isn’t yours to keep. There’ll be one, eventually, that is — you’ll know the difference when it happens, because nobody will hand it to you on a card.”

You sound certain.

”I’ve watched it happen before,” she said, and didn’t say to whom.

The wall slate outside his door had updated by the time he reached it.

[DESIGNATION: ASHFALL-ZERO. STATUS: PROVISIONAL — CLASS I / SUBJECT. MOVEMENT AND CONTACT RESTRICTED — REVIEW: 3 DAYS.]

He stood in front of it, long enough that the escort shifted his weight once, and then a second order arrived before either of them had taken a step away — not on the slate this time, but hand-carried. A runner jogged the last stretch of corridor with a sealed page.

The escort took it, read it, and went rigid.

”That’s not the colonel’s seal,” the escort said, mostly to himself. ”That’s not the review board’s, either.”

Whose, then.

The escort didn’t answer him. He read the order again instead, and this time, when he handed it over, he didn’t meet the mask at all.

REPORT TO COMMAND. TONIGHT. UNESCORTED.

No stamp beneath it. No reason given. Just the order and a signature he didn’t recognize, on paper thick enough that it hadn’t come from the same stack as everything else this base had ever handed him.

”Escort mandatory for all movement beyond quarters,” the escort said slowly, reading the wall slate as though it might quietly change its mind. ”That’s what this says.” He held up the order. ”And this says unescorted. Both signed by somebody with the standing to say so.”

He looked at the two of them side by side and understood, before either man worked up the nerve to say it aloud, that the second order didn’t have to argue with the first. It simply outranked it.
