Subject Zero: Faceless

The mask had arrived an hour before the liaison did, in a paper sleeve, and he wore it now — plain molded composite, the first thing this base had given him that fit. She walked with him this time, close enough that her shoulder nearly brushed his through two corridors and a stairwell down.

”You don’t have to answer everything they ask tonight,” she said. ”You don’t have to answer anything, if it comes to that — but say so instead of just going quiet. Quiet reads as something in a room like this one.”

The corridor ended at a door with a keypad instead of a bolt, and a guard beside it who checked a slate before checking either of their faces. Her name — whatever it was, he still didn’t have it — wasn’t on whatever list mattered here.

”Observers only for cleared personnel,” the guard said. ”She stays.”

”I’ll be outside,” she said. ”The whole time. That’s not nothing, even if it doesn’t feel like much from where you’re standing.”

Then the door took him, and she was on the other side of it.

* * *

A woman sat at the far side of a bare table, a colonel’s insignia at her collar, a slate open in front of her and a second one, blank, set at an angle for him.

”Sit if you’d like. Stand if you’d rather. It won’t be noted either way.” She didn’t look up from her slate. ”Foundry designation Subject Zero. Extracted this morning from a compound tagged Foundry-Zero, dark for eleven days, presumed defunct. Current status provisional, pending Classification.” She read it in the flat cadence of a manifest. ”Anything in that you’d dispute?”

No.

”Good.” She turned the slate his way one last moment, long enough for him to read the line underneath: [STATUS: PROVISIONAL — CLASS I / SUBJECT. GRADE REVIEW PENDING.] ”It’s a placeholder, not a verdict. Could be sooner than you’d like. Could be never, if you give people no reason to bother.”

She set the slate down and picked up the other. ”Let’s start with tonight, since it’s the reason we’re both awake.” She turned it toward him — a report, formatted in the same flat institutional hand as the corporal’s forms. Unauthorized contact. Emergency containment triggered. Nothing about a knock nobody had answered.

”Tell me what happened. Your version. I’ve already got theirs.”

He wrote for a while — the knocking, the silence past the door, the two words he’d sent and the reason he’d judged them small enough to risk. He left out the part where the guard’s face, for half a second through the slot, had told him more about the room he was in than anything anyone had said aloud since.

”Two words,” she said. ”How long. That’s what put four rifles in a room, is that right?”

He nodded.

”You understand why that troubles people, separate from the ward doing exactly what it was built to do.”

I understand why it troubles the report. I don’t know yet what troubles the people.

Something in her face shifted — not warmth, but attention, redirected onto him rather than the slate. ”That’s an honest answer.”

* * *

The questions widened after that — what he remembered of the compound before the extraction, whether he’d been told, ever, what the program had actually wanted from him. He answered what he could and wrote I don’t know for the rest.

You survived eleven years of it, she wrote at one point, turning the slate so he’d have to look up to read it. Something kept you doing that. I’d like to know what.

He held the stylus over the glass longer than any question so far had earned.

A face came to him, unbidden and immediate, arriving the instant a room went quiet enough to let it — a woman’s, smiling, held behind the smooth skin where eyes had been through years that had tried everything short of killing him to take it away. He had never once given it to anyone in this building.

He wasn’t going to start with a colonel he’d known for an hour, in a room built to hold nothing back.

Habit, he wrote. Four letters. True enough not to be a lie, small enough to survive being read by someone whose job was reading this kind of thing for what it wasn’t saying.

She looked at the word for longer than four letters should have taken.

”That’s not an answer,” she said. ”That’s a door.”

It’s the answer I have for tonight.

”Fair enough. I’ll ask it again eventually. I generally do.”

Near the end, she folded her hands on the table. ”I’m told you can hear me without the slate. I’m told you can answer the same way, if I agree to it, and only if I agree to it.” A dry note entered her voice. ”Efficient teaching method. Not one I’d recommend repeating.”

”I consent,” she said, without qualification. ”For one question. Go ahead.”

He reached, careful and slow about it. «Why does it matter what kept me going, if the only thing you actually need from me is what I can do now.»

She didn’t answer in his head — she spoke it aloud on purpose, wanting the room’s recorder to have it in her own voice and not his borrowed one. ”Because a weapon that survives eleven years for no reason at all is a different variable than one that survived for a reason it won’t name. One of those is stable. The other is waiting for something. I’d like to know, before command decides how much rope to give you, which one I’m looking at.”

She closed both slates. ”You kept something back tonight. I don’t fault you for it. But a man with nothing to hide answers slowly because he’s watchful. A man with something worth hiding answers slowly for a different reason entirely. Tonight, I couldn’t tell you which one I watched.”

* * *

The liaison came for him earlier the next time, and said less on the way.

”Different room today,” she said. ”Different reason. Nobody’s going to ask you to explain yourself in there. Somebody’s going to ask you to look at something instead.”

The room was a records room in every particular that mattered — a long surface, better light than the intake block had bothered with, three slates arranged face-down at measured intervals. The colonel he recognized before she looked up: no collar insignia catching the light this time, sleeves pushed back like she’d been at this longer than the hour it had taken to bring him in.

”Sit,” she said. ”This isn’t the other room. I mean that literally — nothing said in here goes in an assessment file. It goes in a recovery log.”

The slate held a scanned reconstruction — whole sections replaced with the flat gray of official redaction, the rest recovered well enough to read.

CYCLE LOG — SUBJECT ZERO — PARTIAL RECOVERY

CYCLE 30: Compliance sustained without incentive. Note for quarterly review.

CYCLE 41: No further baseline adjustment required. Subject stable for extended interval.

He read it twice. The second time didn’t change what it said.

Subject stable. Someone had filed his silence as a fixed problem, solved.

”You don’t have to say anything about that one,” the colonel said. ”I put it first on purpose. Better you meet the worst of it early, on your own schedule.”

The second slate was logistics — manifests, transfer authorizations. One line, near the bottom of a resupply manifest half redacted into illegibility, meant everything.

ORIGIN: FOUNDRY-ZERO. DESTINATION: [REDACTED]. CARGO CLASS: CALIBRATION MATERIEL, ROTATIONAL.

Foundry-Zero, he wrote. That’s a number. Not a name.

”It’s both, as far as we can tell. Nobody’s found a Foundry-One. On a burned compound with eleven years of paper trail, that’s not proof of anything either way.”

You think there are others.

”I think a name like that doesn’t get chosen by an organization that only ever built the one.” A fact stated rather than a fear indulged. ”I think somebody in this building is already trying to find out.”

The third slate, she turned face-up herself, and didn’t say anything while he read it.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION — SUBJECT ZERO — CYCLE 45

Relocation scheduled pending Board ratification. Destination facility: [REDACTED]. Purpose: continuation, Phase III calibration protocol. Authorization pending as of compound closure.

He read it a third time before he let himself understand the phrase sitting at the bottom of it. Pending as of compound closure. Cycle 41 was the last thing anyone had thought worth logging about him before the Dominion stopped existing loudly enough for the world to notice. Cycle 45 was four cycles past that — four cycles the Foundry had scheduled, on paper, for a subject they hadn’t finished with, at a facility whose name nobody in this room was allowed to see.

The order to move him had simply never been signed.

”You understand what you’re looking at,” the colonel said.

They had four more cycles planned, he wrote. Somewhere I’ve never been. The file stopped here. The plan didn’t.

He turned the Sight on her, aimed and unhesitating. Through it, past the worn procedural cadence she’d kept the whole session, he read something that hadn’t made it into her voice at all: this had unsettled her too, freshly, real and unrehearsed.

You’re not as steady about this as you sound.

Something crossed her face too quickly to name. ”No. I’m not. Good catch.”

She gathered the slates. ”Here’s the one thing in this that should actually let you sleep tonight: Cycle Forty-Five never happened, because the person who could sign it stopped existing before the paperwork reached him.” A pause, more clinical than kind. ”Command was drafting a request to widen the search past this compound’s fence line before your convoy got hit on the way here. Now it’s not a request. Nobody in this building is calling those two things a coincidence anymore, and I’d rather you hear that from me than read it in a status update three weeks from now.”

* * *

The liaison was waiting past the checkpoint, and read something in his face that had no features to read it from.

”That bad,” she said. She hadn’t needed to ask.

There might be a second compound. He kept his account short — Foundry-Zero, Cycle Forty-Five, a signature that never came.

She was quiet long enough that he understood this was new to her too.

”Nobody told me that,” she said, finally, an edge in it he hadn’t heard from her before. ”I’ll find out why. I can’t promise I’ll like the answer, or that I’ll be allowed to give it to you.”

I didn’t expect you would.

”It’s still wrong,” she said, quietly, more to herself than to him.
