Subject Zero: Faceless

The checkpoint at the Meridian Asset Directorate had no sandbags.

That was the first thing he catalogued, before the gate had finished sliding back. No sandbags, no wire coiled along the fence base, no soldier squinting down a rifle from a firing step. Just a clean stretch of pale stone wall, a guardhouse with actual glass in its windows, and a corporal who checked his transfer seal against a ledger without once looking up at the rest of him.

Nobody here flinched at the seal.

The transport rolled through into a compound built for permanence rather than a front. Low administrative blocks in orderly rows, a parade ground swept clean, trees planted in a line someone had clearly expected to be standing in twenty years. Nothing about it moved like the Ninth Front had moved. Nothing here was bracing for contact before nightfall.

A hand-lettered sign near the motor pool read DIRECTORATE GARDEN — WATER ROTATION POSTED WEEKLY, staked in front of a bed of vegetables somebody was clearly arguing over. He read it twice. It was the strangest thing he’d seen all day, because it assumed, without hedging, that there would be a next week to water anything in.

He didn’t trust it. He filed the feeling and kept walking.

A young private met the transport at the administrative block’s steps, checked a slate against his own, and led him inside without asking his name. She had it, printed and correct, on the top sheet.

The office he was brought to belonged to a man who stood when he entered, which no one at the Ninth Front had ever done for him.

”Ashfall-Zero.” The man said it the way someone reads a heading they have committed to memory. ”Director Thorne. I run this Directorate’s field-asset side. Training, tasking coordination, the day-to-day of what Corps Intelligence decided to centralize under one roof.” He didn’t offer a hand. He gestured instead to the chair across from his desk. ”Sit. This won’t be long, and none of it needs to be a performance.”

He sat. He’d learned, by now, to notice when a room wasn’t performing at him.

Thorne turned a slate face-up on the desk between them rather than reading from it aloud.

[SUBJECT: ASHFALL-ZERO. STATUS: CLASS II / ASSET — CONFIRMED, PERMANENT RECORD. CALIBRATION TYPE: UNRESOLVED. TASKING AUTHORITY: CORPS INTELLIGENCE, CENTRALIZED. RELIABILITY REVIEW: CLOSED. ASSIGNMENT: ACTIVE, UNASSIGNED PENDING ORIENTATION.]

”I’ve read the Corvale after-action twice,” Thorne said. ”I’ve read Sergeant Reyes’s cost assessment, Major Renner’s reliability closeout, and Colonel Marrow’s notes on the Static incident before that. I’m not going to make you sit through a version of any of it filtered through my own opinion of what it means. You already know what happened. I know what happened. The only thing I don’t know yet is what you’re actually like to have in a room, and paperwork doesn’t answer that.” He folded his hands. ”Nothing to prove here. That’s not a kindness. It’s a fact about how this place is run. We don’t retest what Corps has spent two postings and a war confirming.”

No one has ever opened with that before.

He reached for the slate at his hip out of habit and found, instead, a fresh one waiting on the desk’s edge, angled toward him. Thorne had set it there before he arrived.

Then what does this place want from me, he wrote, if not proof.

Thorne read it without reacting to the bluntness of it. ”Function, mostly. You’ll be tasked out of here on whatever Corps Intelligence routes through this office. That part of your file doesn’t change. What changes is that you’re not a field command’s problem to manage anymore between missions. You’re this Directorate’s, full time, whether you’re deployed or not. That’s most of what ’centralized’ meant when Renner wrote it on your closeout.” He paused. ”There’s also a Line protocol here I should put in front of you directly, since you’ve earned the right to say no to it without consequence. Some of what comes through this office arrives faster than a runner or a relay can carry it. I’d like standing consent to open a channel to you when that happens. Nothing without your agreement each time it’s used, but the channel itself, so I’m not starting from zero whenever there’s a reason to reach you.”

You’re asking to open a channel. Not testing whether I’ll let you.

”I’m asking,” Thorne said. ”If the answer’s no, the answer’s no, and it changes nothing else in this office.”

He thought of the colonel. The only person alive who had ever asked him this. He thought of how long it had taken to trust that a live consent, given honestly, cost him nothing he hadn’t agreed to give.

Yes, he wrote. Once. See what it’s like before I decide if it’s standing.

Thorne nodded, unsurprised, and didn’t reach for anything ceremonial to mark the moment. He simply thought the word at him, flat and deliberate, the way a clerk might read a line off a card. «Testing.»

The word arrived clean and plain, a small transaction and nothing more.

«Received,» he sent back, and felt something settle into place behind his sternum that had nothing to do with cost or ringing or any of the tolls Calibration extracted from him. A second thread, thin and new, laid down beside the one thread he’d carried since a corridor at the old forward base, a war and half a continent ago.

Two, now, he thought.

Thorne closed the channel from his own side without comment, satisfied, and moved on as if nothing unusual had happened.

He was routed to records before he was routed to his room, which he took as a fair statement of the posting’s priorities.

It was a narrow office lined with Core-lit archive plates, each one holding more paper than its size should have allowed, and the private who had led him in from the steps was already behind the counter when he reached it, his transfer folder open in front of her and a second folder considerably thicker sitting under it.

”Private Mabry. I do intake filing for anything Corps Intelligence routes through here.” She said his designation carefully, like a word she’d rehearsed before she ever expected to use it aloud. ”This is going to sound strange, but I’ve actually read your Corvale file. Twice. It’s case-study material now — new intake staff go through it before we’re cleared to touch anything Directorate-side.”

Case-study material.

He held still while she said it.

”The third Calibration use especially,” she went on, oblivious or simply young enough not to notice what she was standing in. ”The bit where you don’t remember doing it. Sergeant Reyes’s writeup on that is the best documentation of a Calibration cost anyone’s got on file. They use it to teach new techs what ’unpredictable’ actually looks like on a chart, instead of just the word.” She caught herself somewhere around the word chart, and the eagerness in her face folded down into something closer to embarrassment. ”Sorry. That’s — I shouldn’t be talking about your own file like it’s a lecture.”

You already did. Twice.

He didn’t write it. He reached for the slate out of habit and found he had nothing on it that wouldn’t land harder than the moment needed.

She stamped the transfer quick and a little too hard, slid the folder the rest of the way across the counter, and then stopped with her hand flat on it.

”I read it the way you’d read anyone’s, because that’s the job,” she said. ”I forgot somewhere in there that you’re not anyone’s. You’re the one it happened to.”

Most people forget that in the other direction. They remember I’m not anyone, and stop there.

He wrote it plain, and watched her actually read it rather than skim it for the next thing to say.

”That’s worse,” she said finally. ”I think that might genuinely be worse.”

The corridor to his quarters ran past a wing with its own separate badge reader, doors closed, no names on any of them. Just numbers, stenciled small and recent enough that the paint looked wet under the hall lights. He slowed without meaning to. A compound built for one reference case wouldn’t need a wing.

He added it to the morning’s list of things not yet trusted, and kept walking.

The room they gave him afterward had a door that locked from the inside.

He stood in the doorway, working out why that detail had stopped him. A bed, plain but real, with sheets tucked with more care than a barracks cot ever got. A desk. A window that looked out over the parade ground rather than a wall. A wardrobe with nothing in it yet, waiting to be given a reason to hold anything.

He’d expected a cell. Some version of the Ninth Front’s bare billet, or worse, something closer to the Foundry’s rooms dressed up in cleaner paint. What he’d been given instead was a room built for someone expected to stay years, not weeks.

He crossed to the window and tried it, out of the same habit that made him check every door twice. It opened — six inches, and no farther, a discreet stop bolted into the frame just wide enough to let air through and nothing else.

Different room. Same ceiling on how far a window opens.

He stood with his hand on the sash for a long moment, the six inches of open air moving cool and ordinary across his fingers, and understood, finally, what had actually unsettled him about the whole afternoon. It was that every part of this posting had been built to feel like the leash had finally come off. Right up until the exact point where it hadn’t, dressed carefully enough that a man might spend months here before he found the stop bolted into the frame.

A knock came at the door before he could decide how he felt about that. A private he didn’t recognize stood in the hall with a folded set of linens and a data slate.

”Orientation starts at oh-eight-hundred tomorrow,” she said, holding both out without waiting to see whether he’d reach for them himself. Underneath the linens sat a second mask, lighter than his combat-rated one, the composite thinner and the clasp a single simple hook rather than the double strap Dray had issued him before Corvale. ”That one’s for anywhere on this compound that isn’t a field exercise. Quartermaster figured you wouldn’t want to walk into the mess hall looking ready for a breach.” She said it flatly, no apology in it either way. ”Director Thorne says take tonight. Nobody’s going to come looking for you before then.”

She left before he could write anything back, her footsteps fading down a corridor quiet enough that he could hear, somewhere past the far wall, the ordinary sound of a door closing in a building where doors closing meant nothing at all.

He turned the lighter mask over once in his hands before setting it beside the combat one on the desk.

He sat on the edge of the real bed, in the real room, with a window that opened exactly as far as someone had decided it should, and did not unpack anything.
