Subject Zero: Faceless

The staging yard behind the motor pool held four light transports, a stack of crates half-loaded, and five soldiers moving around all of it with the particular economy of people who had done this enough times not to waste motion on it. Nobody here was dressed for a parade ground. Kit was mismatched, patched in places, worn from actual use rather than kept pristine for inspections nobody at the Ninth Front had time to hold.

The corporal who’d walked him from the quartermaster’s stores stopped at the yard’s edge and pointed rather than escorted him the rest of the way.

”That’s Third Squad. Lieutenant’s the one arguing with the crate.”

She was, in fact, arguing with the crate — crouched over it, resettling a strap that had come loose, muttering something uncomplimentary about whoever had packed it. She straightened when he was still ten feet off, took him in once, top to bottom, mask included, with an attention that catalogued rather than stared.

”Ashfall-Zero.” Not a question, same as the corporal at the gate — his designation had apparently outrun him to every corner of this base. ”Osei. I run this squad, which as of about an hour ago now includes you.” She said it plainly, matter-of-fact, like she was reading a line off a manifest rather than delivering news either of them needed to react to. ”Major briefed me on the shape of it. Not the details. I need to know you can carry your weight and follow a hand signal, because that’s what tonight actually requires.”

He held up the slate, stylus in hand from the walk over.

I don’t have a voice. Hand signals work. Anything that needs more than that, I write.

Osei read it, nodded once like she’d assumed as much and was glad not to have to ask. ”Good. Saves us both a conversation I don’t have time for.” She turned and raised her voice half a register, pitched to carry across the yard rather than at him specifically. ”Squad up. New attachment, taking Kestrin’s slot for tonight. Say your names once — he’ll remember them or he won’t, same as anyone.”

* * *

Three of them did.

A broad-shouldered corporal named Ilsen gave him a short nod and went back to checking a strap on his own pack, plainly unbothered — the mask, as far as he seemed concerned, was somebody else’s problem to have an opinion about. A quieter soldier — Wren, a private, younger than the rest by the look of her — offered a nod too, then a second look at the mask that lingered a beat longer than Ilsen’s had, curious rather than hostile. A third, older, introduced himself only as Cade and went straight back to the crate he’d been packing without waiting to see whether the courtesy was returned.

The fourth didn’t offer a name at all.

He was watching before Osei’s voice had finished the introduction — arms crossed, weight settled back on his heels, opinion clearly decided in advance and only waiting for an opening to be said out loud.

”Corporal Hollis,” Osei said for him, when it became clear he wasn’t going to. ”Say hello, Hollis.”

”I’ll pass.” Hollis didn’t move from where he stood. ”We’re short a rifle because Kestrin’s in a medevac tent with half his leg gone, and command’s answer is to hand me a Foundry freak with a file so redacted even the Major couldn’t read half of it. Forgive me if I don’t feel like making friends about it.”

Nobody in the yard told him to stand down. Osei didn’t move to shut it down either — watching, arms loose at her sides, giving the moment as much room as it needed and not one second more.

He’s owed an honest answer, not an easy one.

He wrote instead of writing nothing, because Hollis had asked a real question underneath the insult, even if he hadn’t meant to.

I don’t know what I’ll do under fire. Neither does command. That’s the actual redaction — not what I did, what I might do.

Hollis read it and didn’t soften at all. If anything, his jaw set harder.

”That’s supposed to reassure me.”

No. It’s supposed to be true. I could tell you something reassuring instead, if you’d rather have that.

”I’d rather have a rifle I trust at my back, and I’ve got neither of those things right now.” Hollis finally looked away from the slate, to Osei instead. ”Sten had one of these behind him at Calder’s Ridge. Sten’s dead. The asset that killed him wasn’t even the enemy’s — it was ours, and it came apart mid-fight and took half a squad with it before anyone got close enough to put it down. I’ve read that after-action report more times than I’ve read my own paycheck stub. A number where a name should be isn’t going to be what changes that.”

The yard had gone quiet enough that the distant percussion from earlier felt loud again by comparison.

Ocular Bypass, unbidden, read the shape of what sat under the words before he’d decided to look for it. Genuine grief, old enough that it had stopped being sharp and started being simply part of how the man carried himself.

He didn’t write anything back to that. Some griefs weren’t arguments to be won, and Hollis hadn’t handed him one to win.

Osei let the silence hold for as long as it needed to, then cut it off before it could turn into anything either of them would have to apologize for later.

”Noted, and logged, and we are done with it for tonight.” She said it without raising her voice, which somehow carried further than if she had. ”Hollis, you’ve made your objection. It’s on record with me, same as it’ll be on record with the Major if you want to file it formally after we’re back. Right now I need both your rifles pointed the same direction in about ninety minutes, and I don’t have the luxury of caring whether you like each other while I get that.”

”Copy,” Hollis said, flat, and turned back to his own gear without another glance.

More a postponement than a resolution — two people agreeing to shelve a disagreement long enough to survive the next several hours, a trick every unit like this one seemed to have learned long before he arrived.

Wren fell into step beside him a few minutes later, ostensibly to check the fit of his pack straps, actually — he suspected, without needing the Sight to confirm it — to say something without making it a scene.

”He lost people at Calder’s Ridge,” she said, low. ”Half the squad he had before this one. Give him the whole tour before you decide he’s just being ugly about it.”

I already read that much off him. I’m not deciding anything about him tonight.

”Good.” She tightened the last strap with more force than it strictly needed. ”Because you’re going to be standing next to him in about ninety minutes, and he’ll do his job either way. That’s the part people forget about Hollis. He hates the assignment. He’s never once let it change how he shoots.”

Osei walked the squad through the shape of the op with a hand-drawn map and no wasted words: a listening post on a ridge overlooking a supply road, manned in rotating pairs — mostly waiting, with an occasional exception nobody wanted to be caught unready for. She assigned him to the second watch rotation, paired with Ilsen rather than Hollis — a decision made without comment, and understood by everyone present exactly as intended.

Hand signals for contact, hand signals for withdraw, hand signals for hold position. She ran through them once, watching to see if he could repeat the last one back correctly before moving on. He could. She didn’t praise it and didn’t need to; competence here seemed to be its own reward, the only currency this yard traded in tonight.

The transports started their engines with a low Core-hum that ran through the ground before it reached the ear. Crates went in. Rifles slung. Ilsen checked his straps a second time out of habit rather than doubt.

”Load up,” Osei called, climbing in herself. ”Wheels up in five whether we’re all the way ready or not — the road doesn’t wait on introductions.”

He climbed in with the rest of them — Hollis three seats down, Wren beside him — and the argument went where everything else about tonight had gone: folded up and set aside, waiting for whatever came after the ridge.

The transport ran dark once it cleared the perimeter fence, no interior lights, only the faint Core-glow off the dash bleeding into the compartment. Ilsen worked a whetstone over a blade he almost certainly wasn’t going to need tonight, methodical, unhurried, the sound of it steady enough to fill the silence Hollis had left behind him. Cade slept, or did a convincing impression of it. Wren watched the window. Hollis sat three seats down with his rifle upright between his knees, facing the compartment and everything in it, awake in a manner that had nothing to do with keeping watch.

Nobody spoke to him again for the rest of the ride, and he found he didn’t mind it — silence, at least, was a language he’d never once had trouble with.

Somewhere ahead, past whatever ridge this road eventually climbed, the same low percussion he’d first felt in the transport’s frame hours ago was still going, patient and unbothered by the hour — a war that had clearly been running long before Third Squad and would still be running long after this one listening post stopped mattering to anyone at all.
