Subject Zero: Faceless

Neither of them said much on the walk down. The liaison had tried, twice, to start a sentence that wasn’t about the demonstration, and abandoned both before they went anywhere.

The strapping went on in the same order every time — ankle, ankle, waist, wrist, wrist.

”They’re not for holding you down,” the technician said, tightening the last wrist cuff to a padded rest built into the frame’s armrest. ”They’re for holding you still, relative to the sensors.”

The rig itself was a chair the way the Foundry’s table had been furniture — technically, and to nobody who’d sat in it. A high frame of pale alloy, veined with fine Calibration-etching, sensor leads gathered into a braid that ran under the floor toward the readout bank. The technician worked down a printed checklist, touching each lead as he cleared it, murmuring the item numbers under his breath. Item nineteen was a strap. Item twenty was him.

The liaison stood at the edge of the room until a second technician asked her, politely, to move behind the observation glass with the colonel.

The chamber was smaller than he’d expected for something with this much attention riding on it — one wall a lattice of dark glass panels, each seamed with the same fine veins of etching as the chair, built to catch a Subject’s output much as a lightning rod catches weather rather than causing it. Behind the glass, a technician sat at a bank of readouts. The brigadier stood apart from everyone, arms folded, watching the panel wall rather than him.

A third figure occupied the gallery’s far corner, seated, unremarkable in silhouette, saying nothing to anyone. He turned the Sight on the shape by reflex and got back the same cold, patient arithmetic the corridor outside the command wing had taught him to expect from that particular quiet.

”This is a controlled Calibration reading,” the colonel said, her voice carrying through a small grille beside the glass. ”You’ll be asked for output in stages, each one held and recorded before we move to the next. The panel is rated well above anything a Class I subject has ever produced in testing.”

”One more thing, and it supersedes everything else you’re told today. If anything in a stage feels wrong — not difficult, wrong — you stop. You don’t wait for permission to stop.” Behind her, the brigadier’s reflection shifted in the dark glass, and said nothing, which said plenty.

Understood.

”Ten percent,” the technician called.

A single panel warmed, faint and even.

It was, he understood, the smallest thing anyone had ever asked of him with this much ceremony attached. Ten percent of a scale nobody had shown him the top of.

”Twenty-five. Holding steady — that’s baseline.” A pause. ”Proceed to forty.”

Through the observation glass, the gallery held three different kinds of stillness. The liaison’s: arms folded tight enough to read as bracing. The colonel’s was procedural, eyes moving between him and the readouts on a steady circuit. The brigadier’s was the stillness of a man at a demonstration of something he considered proven, waiting for the equipment to catch up to his paperwork.

He gave it as much as the number asked for — no more, giving it the same care he gave anything that carried real consequences for getting wrong.

”Forty. Holding.” Something almost like approval crept into the technician’s voice, professional and unhidden. ”Clean. That’s a cleaner hold than most Class I readings I’ve logged.”

”Fifty.”

He gave fifty no differently than he’d given every number before it. For one full breath of silence, fifty held — and for that one breath, he understood something he hadn’t expected to feel in this chair: the plain, unfamiliar satisfaction of doing a thing correctly, in front of people whose whole job was noticing when it wasn’t.

Then it didn’t hold.

”Fifty-five,” the technician said, and something in his voice had started narrowing. ”Holding — no. No, it’s not holding.”

* * *

The number kept climbing after he stopped asking it to.

He felt the gap between the two things clearly, even as it was happening — the exact, deliberate forty he’d been giving the panel a moment ago, and whatever was now pouring past it uninvited, using his effort as a door rather than a source. Pushing harder didn’t slow it. Pushing harder wasn’t, he realized with a kind of distant, clinical horror all its own, actually doing anything at all.

”Sixty. Sixty-five.” The technician’s voice had lost its procedure. ”That’s not requested output, that’s — sir, he isn’t producing this, something’s drawing through him—”

”Cut the circuit,” the colonel said, already moving.

”I’m trying. Ninety. It’s not slowing for the cutoff—”

The first hairline crack ran the width of a glass panel with a sound like a knuckle popping, and then three more went at once, and the low hum the array had been carrying since ten percent climbed into something with an edge on it. Light spilled through the fractures in threads too fine to be anything but wrong. A guard by the door brought his rifle up on pure reflex, aimed at nothing, at everything.

In the gallery, the liaison was on her feet with a palm flat against the observation glass, saying something the grille didn’t carry. The brigadier had not stepped back. He had leaned forward, fractionally, watching the climbing number with the expression of a man being agreed with by the universe. Only the seated figure in the corner hadn’t moved at all — and of everyone watching, that stillness was the only one that did not look surprised.

”One-ten. One-forty—”

The colonel’s hand came down on a physical breaker, not a slate — an actual lever, used, by the sound of it, for the first time. The array went dark and silent in the same half-second.

He sat in the sudden quiet, hands still cuffed to the frame’s rests, and understood, distantly, that his pulse hadn’t changed at all through any of it. Whatever had just happened to the room had cost him nothing he could point to.

Nobody spoke for several seconds that felt considerably longer.

”Well.” The brigadier hadn’t moved. ”There’s the argument I’ve been making since the first week, delivered by the subject himself, free of charge.”

”That readout was calibrated for Class I,” the colonel said, and for the first time he heard something in her voice that wasn’t holding a line so much as standing in the wreckage of one. ”It wasn’t built to survive Class II. We tested him at a ceiling that turned out to be the wrong ceiling.”

”Which is precisely the problem. We’ve been managing a provisional Subject as though the provisional part were the whole story. I’d like restricted movement and no unsupervised contact on the table again — decided before the incident report this time, not after.”

”You had your controlled demonstration. It was controlled. That’s the part of this room’s job that actually got done today.”

”It was controlled until it wasn’t. Which is the only sentence in this entire file that has ever mattered.”

The colonel didn’t answer immediately.

”Effective today,” she said finally. ”Not indefinite. Reviewed in one week, not held open-ended.” A concession offered to no one but herself.

The seated figure in the gallery’s corner rose without a word, without so much as a glance at the shattered array, and left the observation room by a door he hadn’t noticed until it opened. Nobody in the room commented on it. Nobody, he understood, was going to.

Four other files, somewhere, and this morning just became a data point for all of them.

* * *

The technician unbuckled him in the same order the straps had gone on, and said nothing this time about the difference between holding down and holding still.

Behind him, the chamber had begun turning into an incident site. Two more technicians moved down the panel wall with a hand lamp and a box of numbered tags. Four panels. Seven cracks. Somebody photographed the breaker lever in its thrown position before anyone was allowed to reset it, and a corporal at the door had started a list of everyone present, which meant somebody senior had asked for one.

The liaison met him in the corridor outside.

”I watched the whole thing happen through glass I couldn’t open. I want you to know that wasn’t a small thing for me, and I’m not going to pretend it was.”

I know.

She fell into step beside him — a shorter route than usual, past a checkpoint that hadn’t had a second guard posted on it that morning and had one now.

The wall slate outside his door lit before either of them reached it.

[STATUS: PROVISIONAL — CLASS I / SUBJECT. MOVEMENT AND CONTACT RESTRICTED — REVIEW IN SEVEN DAYS.]

He read it once, and understood that the number the panel had reached before the colonel’s hand found the breaker was still climbing, somewhere, in a room none of them were standing in anymore.

For fifty full points on a scale that went to a hundred, he had been exactly as good at this as anyone had ever asked him to be. Nobody in that gallery was going to remember the fifty.
