Subject Zero: Faceless

Two days later, the liaison found him outside the mess he couldn’t eat in and told him where they were walking before he could ask why.

”Logistics review for the Controlled Demonstration. Not yours — mine. I need to confirm the venue before anyone briefs you on any of it. You’re coming because leaving you alone in a room for forty minutes isn’t something anyone’s eager to authorize twice.”

The command wing was a different texture of corridor entirely — carpet instead of bare floor, doors with names on plaques instead of numbers. No seam ran the width of any hallway here. Whatever kept this section calm, it wasn’t built into the floor.

He was learning to read the plaques the way he’d once read footsteps outside a vault door. Half of them clustered near the operations end, where officers walked fast and carried folders they didn’t trust to runners; the rest sat closer to records, where the same ranks moved slower and stopped oftener to talk in doorways. Two currents in one building, sorting themselves without anyone ordering it. The liaison steered between them like a person crossing a river she’d crossed before — never against the flow of either.

She left him on a bench outside a duty desk and went to argue, pleasantly but without give, about a structural rating.

Down the corridor, past two closed doors, a third stood open a finger’s width, and voices came through it flattened by distance into something closer to weather than speech. He recognized one of them anyway. The brigadier didn’t lower his voice for anyone.

I could know what that is.

He knew the rule. He knew, too, that breaking it again on purpose, with nothing at stake but his own curiosity, would not read the same way twice.

There are other files. I’ve read those too. The brigadier had said it to the silent seats, not to him, and he hadn’t been able to put it down since — how many, where, whether they were sitting where he’d sat.

The liaison’s voice still carried from the desk, arguing about the rating. He had, by his own count, perhaps ninety seconds.

He counted the cost first, because the cost wasn’t his. If the reach was felt — if it was even suspected — the report wouldn’t say he listened. It would say the colonel’s consent created an opening, and the one officer arguing for evaluating him like a person would become the evidence against her own argument. He set that on one side of the scale. On the other: a sentence he couldn’t put down, and a room deciding things about him it never intended him to hear.

The scale tipped. He was not proud of which way.

He reached for the colonel specifically — not blind, not a stranger’s mind picked at random, but the one channel that had ever been opened to him with actual consent. Something about that first honest contact had left a thread behind, thin and half-forgotten, like a groove a held door wears into a carpet over years of use. He found it faster than he expected to.

What came through first wasn’t words. It was weather again, closer now — frustration held tightly enough to keep its shape, and under it something colder that didn’t belong to her at all: a third presence in the room, patient, unhurried as a ledger.

Then, as the argument sharpened, a few words arrived clean enough to keep.

«—if the board’s decision on him becomes the reference case, I want it decided right the first time, not refought every time we pull another one out of a Foundry site—»

«There are four other files sitting where his was two weeks ago,» the brigadier said, sharper now, close enough to full clarity that he could have named the voice blind. «If this case sets the precedent, that’s four separate fights instead of one, and I would rather win the one in front of me, on our terms, than lose the other four on someone else’s.»

«Or you set a precedent for restraint you can’t walk back the first time it actually matters,» the colonel said.

Four. He’d known there were others since the board. Not how many. Not that they were sitting where he’d sat.

«Restraint.» The brigadier gave the word back its full weight. «I’m proposing a standing protocol. One facility, purpose-built, all five held under a single command with a single doctrine, instead of five garrisons improvising five different answers. Call it whatever the paperwork needs. What it buys is that no board ever again argues about one of them from scratch.»

«What it buys is the Foundry with our flag on the gate.» The colonel’s voice didn’t rise, which somehow carried further. «You’d inherit their inventory and their logic in the same signature. And all five of them would understand it inside a week, whatever we painted on the walls — that the war ended, and the only thing that changed was the uniform doing the holding.»

«The war ended eleven days before an armed retrieval team hit one of our convoys. Somebody out there disagrees about what ended.»

The cold presence spoke, brief and in no hurry at all, a voice with nothing to prove. «Then I want the board’s answer to be one we can point to later without flinching. Both of you understand what I’m asking for.»

He should have pulled back there. He didn’t, one breath too long, greedy for the rest of the sentence.

The colonel went still.

«...wait.»

It carried no address at all — just the sound a mind makes when it feels a door testing its own hinges from the wrong side.

He let go before it could close all the way, and sat very still on the bench after, mask giving the corridor nothing, until the liaison came back from the duty desk.

”Venue’s confirmed,” she said. ”You look like you’ve been sitting on a bench for ten minutes doing nothing. Which is, encouragingly, exactly what you were supposed to be doing.”

He didn’t tell her the rest on the walk back.

The summons that evening came as the liaison herself, alone, telling him only that the colonel wanted him, now, and that she — the liaison — hadn’t been told why and wasn’t invited either.

The room was small, unbadged, no board, no other seats. The colonel sat with her own slate out.

”Something touched the edge of a meeting today that had no business touching it. I want to know if it was you.”

I wanted to know about the other files. How many. Where. Nothing else. No shelter built around it.

She read it twice, and something in her face settled, like a decision arriving that she hadn’t wanted to make yet.

”You used the one channel I ever agreed to give you. You understand what that does to the next person who has to decide whether consenting to you is safe.”

I do now.

She studied him a moment, and some of the anger banked itself into something more useful.

”Since you were listening — hear the rest of it properly. The man you overheard wants all five of you in one place, under one authority, with one doctrine, and he is not wrong that it would be tidier. I want five separate boards making five separate decisions about five separate people, and I am not wrong that it’s slower, costs more, and will be argued about for years. Above both of us sits somebody whose whole function is choosing which mistake this command can better afford. And today you handed that argument a new fact to work with: that a consented channel to you stays open longer than the consent did. You didn’t just spend my trust. You spent it in front of the exact question it was supposed to be answering.”

”I’m not reporting this. You’ve earned every word of a report, if that’s what I wanted to write. I’m not writing one because the only person who’d get anything useful out of it is a man who’s already decided what you are and just needs one more line in a file to prove it, and I am not handing him this one.” She stood, gathering the slate. ”What I am doing is moving your demonstration up. Not next week. This week. I’d rather have a real answer sooner than keep guessing with worse and worse information.”

The liaison was waiting past the checkpoint, arms crossed.

”Nobody tells me anything today,” she said. ”That’s twice in one day I’ve been the last to know something about you. I’d like that to stop being a pattern.”

I used the Line on the colonel. Without asking. I heard part of a meeting you weren’t invited to either.

She didn’t answer right away. ”That’s the worst decision you’ve made since I’ve known you.” She started them walking, slower than usual. ”It’s also the first thing you’ve told me before I had to pull it out of you. I haven’t decided yet which of those weighs more.”

At the door that had become his, she stopped. ”For what it’s worth — the colonel could have fed you to him today and bought herself a month of peace. She didn’t. Remember that the next time you’re deciding what the people in this building are for.”
