Subject Zero: Faceless

Eleven days into the settling-in window, and this was only his second trip past the gate. A week and a half of orientation modules, status paperwork, and a schedule Thorne’s office kept filling faster than he could empty it, none of it leaving an evening free until now. The second trip opened on the same notes as the first. A nod from the gate guard, the reader’s soft chime against the chit, the same downhill road through the same half-turned trees. He noticed, this time, how quickly the routine of it had settled into something almost restful. That, more than anything else, was what made him start paying closer attention.

He’d meant, this time, to find the children’s game again. The girl with the ghost-mark token, whether the same five had gathered or a different five entirely, whether a rule invented on the spot eight days ago had survived long enough to matter to anyone but him. He got as far as the square’s edge before the day’s actual shape announced itself, and the game receded into something he’d have to want again another time.

He saw the woman near the dried-fruit stall first.

She wasn’t doing anything worth remarking on. Examining a basket of late apples, exchanging a few easy words with the vendor, moving on without buying. Ordinary. He might not have registered her if he hadn’t seen the same gray shawl, the same measured, unbothered walk, outside the quartermaster’s gate not forty minutes earlier, on the wrong side of town for someone doing an ordinary afternoon’s shopping twice in one day.

He didn’t approach her. He’d learned, over years of being the watched thing in the room, that the moment you let a watcher know they’d been made, you lost whatever you might have learned from watching them back.

He found her a second time an hour later, this time near the fountain, close enough that a glance in his direction would have looked like nothing to anyone who wasn’t counting.

Third sighting. Three different reasons to be near me, none of them shopping.

He turned the Sight on her quietly, without changing his posture or his pace, and let it settle over her.

Calculation came back. Narrow, practiced, entirely procedural. She was counting minutes and cross-referencing a route, careful to keep the counting invisible under an ordinary afternoon’s face. He recognized that shape of attention. He’d felt it exactly twice before. Off a sergeant’s profile in the back of a truck, the week the vault door opened, and off an officer running numbers behind a calm face during a demonstration that had ended in cracked glass and a new restriction.

Not shopping. Reporting.

He didn’t linger near her again. He finished the rest of his hour as he had the last time — unhurried, unremarkable, giving nothing away.

He tested it once more before he let the matter rest for the day, doubling back through a narrow lane between two shuttered shopfronts that no honest errand would have any reason to use. She reappeared four minutes later at the lane’s far mouth, at the same easy pace, examining a length of rope outside a chandler’s stall she had no apparent use for. Four minutes was too fast for coincidence and too slow for a professional who didn’t want to be caught rushing. He fixed the timing in place.

Director Thorne’s office took the news without surprise.

”There’s a compliance escort assigned to your pass,” Thorne said, once he’d read the slate through twice. ”Not mine. Asset Compliance runs it out of a separate office two floors below this one — standard for any Class II on a first liberty pass, chit or no chit. I should have told you outright instead of letting you find it yourself. That’s a fair thing to be angry about, if you are.”

You told me the chit reported location at intervals. You didn’t mention a person doing the same thing in real time.

”No,” Thorne admitted. ”I told you what I control. Compliance’s escort protocol isn’t mine to disclose or withhold — it runs whether I mention it or not, on every first-pass asset this Directorate has ever processed, you included. I assumed you’d clock it eventually. Most do.” He set the slate down. ”I didn’t lie to you. I also didn’t go out of my way to make sure you knew, and I understand those aren’t the same thing from where you’re sitting.”

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

They aren’t.

”No,” Thorne said again. ”Here’s what I can tell you plainly: the escort’s temporary — thirty days, standard, then Compliance reviews whether it continues. Their thirty days doesn’t run off my calendar, either. My office is counting you through a fourteen-day settling window; you’re eleven days into that. Compliance counts from the day your pass was signed, because they escort the pass, not the man — so by their ledger you’re nine days into thirty, and their clock will still be running more than two weeks after mine has stopped mattering to anyone. Two different clocks, on two different pieces of paper, run by two different offices that don’t especially talk to each other. That’s not a design flaw anyone’s proud of. It’s just how a large enough institution manages a person it hasn’t fully decided how to think about yet.”

A leash with a second leash inside it, in case the first one breaks.

Thorne didn’t argue the metaphor. ”That’s not an unfair way to describe it. I won’t pretend the shape of this is anything other than what it looks like from your side of the desk.”

Why thirty days for me specifically. You said standard.

”Standard for a first-pass Class II,” Thorne said. ”There isn’t a longer list to compare you against — you’re the only Class II reference case who’s ever been through this Directorate’s intake, which means the thirty-day figure was set by policy, not by anything Compliance has actually learned watching you. If that’s a small comfort, take it. If it isn’t, I understand that too.” He paused, weighing something before he said it. ”One thing might matter to you: the number’s already written down somewhere as a baseline for the next one who comes through this door. However this thirty days actually goes, it stops being just yours the moment it’s finished.”

Then I’d better make sure it goes well.

”That’s one way to look at it,” Thorne said. ”One more thing, since you’ve earned the name if you’re going to be walked behind by it. The officer who runs the escort is a warrant officer called Tolliver. Asset Compliance, under Captain Dray, two floors down. He’s not obliged to introduce himself to you.”

* * *

Tolliver was in the outer office when he came out of it, standing rather than sitting, a folder squared under one arm and nothing about him arranged to be noticed. Middle height. Middle age. The kind of man who could stand at a market stall for an hour and afterward be described by nobody.

”Warrant Officer Tolliver.” He did not offer a hand and did not appear to have considered offering one. ”You made my afternoon officer at the chandler’s stall. Four minutes at the lane. You’ll want to know that goes in the report, because everything goes in the report.”

He wrote nothing for a moment, weighing which version of the exchange he wanted.

You could have kept that to yourself.

”I could have. It would have made my job easier tomorrow and harder in six weeks.” Tolliver shifted the folder to his other arm. ”You’ve been told the escort is thirty days. It is thirty days. At the end of it I write an assessment and Captain Dray signs it or doesn’t. I’d rather you spend those days behaving the way you actually behave than the way you think a report wants. The second kind is no use to anybody.”

And if the assessment goes against me.

”Then it goes against you.” He said it the way another man would give a time of day. ”I don’t have an opinion about you yet. I have thirty days of pass movement and nine of them are written down. Good evening.”

He went. Nobody in this building had said anything to him in eleven days without also telling him what it meant.

He left the administrative block without asking for anything. He’d learned, by now, which fights were worth spending an argument on and which ones simply needed to be understood before he decided what to do about them himself.

Walking back toward his quarters, he worked through the numbers Thorne’s honesty had actually made possible rather than harder. Thirty days, one escort, presumably rotating through more than one face so no single watcher grew too familiar to be useful. A pattern with edges, if he looked for them. One more system built to hold him, its shape learnable one quiet observation at a time, same as every other.

Compliance is counting on me not noticing them, or noticing and doing nothing about it either way.

He thought of the fountain, the game, the hour that had asked nothing of him and cost him something anyway. He thought of a gray shawl and a cross-referenced route, moving through the same square where a child three feet away had been learning the rules of a game about hiding your face by choice.

He decided, somewhere between the gate and his own door, that the next time he went into Halstead he wouldn’t walk the route Compliance was expecting him to walk. Not to lose the escort. He doubted that was even possible, and didn’t especially want to test whether trying would cost him the pass itself. Not defiance, either. Thorne had been honest with him twice now, in a room that owed him nothing, and honesty like that deserved better than being repaid with a petty test of its limits. Just to see, once and for certain, how much room a leash like this one actually had in it before it pulled taut. Not tomorrow. On his own schedule rather than Compliance’s, when an afternoon that suited it arrived, he would find out what thirty days of watching actually meant when the man being watched decided to stop making it easy.
