Subject Zero: Faceless

The climb to the ridge took the better part of an hour, single file, no lights, boots finding the trail more by feel than by sight. Somewhere below and behind them the low percussion of the front went on without pause, close enough now to feel through the ground on the steeper stretches. Nobody talked. Talking wasn’t the assignment.

The ridge overlooked the supply road from just far enough back that a passing convoy would need to suspect a listening post before it found one. Osei walked the position twice before she was satisfied with it, then split the squad into pairs without further discussion.

He took first cover beside Wren, low behind a shelf of rock still warm from a sun that had set hours ago. Hollis and Cade held the near slope. Osei and Ilsen took the approach nobody else wanted, the one with the worst sightline and the longest walk back if it went wrong.

Nothing came down the road for three hours. Then a supply truck did, running dark, no escort, gone again before anyone had to decide whether it mattered.

The hand signal for contact never came. Nobody’s hand ever went up.

Hollis passed him once during the first rotation change, close enough to touch, and didn’t look over — the same flat economy he’d have spent on a rock in the trail, nothing more deliberate than that. He filed it next to everything else about the man he wasn’t ready to draw a conclusion from yet, and let it go.

At the second rotation he traded places with Osei, and Ilsen settled in beside him without a word — checking his rifle, checking the road, checking his rifle again. He matched the rhythm as best he could, watching the road do nothing for the better part of two hours.

A whole night, and the worst thing that happened was a truck that didn’t stop.

He didn’t write it down for anyone. There was no one awake enough, on this stretch of the ridge, to hand a slate to.

Dawn came up grey and slow, taking its time deciding whether it wanted to be morning at all. Osei called the post closed a little after first light, and the walk back to the transports was quieter than the walk out had been — five people and one designation, the five of them running on the same three hours of sleep, none of them inclined to talk about a night defined mainly by nothing happening.

Ilsen clapped him once on the shoulder as they loaded up, the same brief, wordless gesture he’d have given anyone else on the squad, and said nothing else about it. Wren asked, mostly to break the quiet, whether he’d ever pulled a full night watch before tonight. He wrote No on the slate and left it there, and she nodded like that answered more than the one question she’d actually asked.

It was, he understood distantly, a kind of acceptance he didn’t need explained to him twice.

Ferro was waiting at the motor pool when the transports rolled in, which told him before anyone said a word that this wasn’t a courtesy visit.

”Get some water in the others and send them to rack out,” Ferro told Osei, not looking away from him. ”Him I need for an hour first.”

Osei didn’t ask why. She peeled off toward the rest of the squad instead, calling names, and left the two of them standing in the churned mud the transports had brought in with them.

The field assessment. It’s still on the transfer file as pending.

”Good memory.” Ferro didn’t sound surprised he’d caught it. ”I’ve got three days left before the push, not three weeks, so it happens now, in whatever we’ve got instead of a proper lab, or it doesn’t happen at all before I need you in the field for real. I’d rather know than not.”

He led the way past the motor pool to a stretch of open ground behind it — a firing range in the loosest sense, sandbagged berms at one end, a set of scorched steel plates at the other, nothing built for measuring anything, only for surviving whatever got thrown at it. No glass panels, no gallery, no bolted rig — just churned dirt and the smell of old cordite the morning hadn’t burned off yet.

A sergeant was waiting there with a crate of instruments that looked like they’d been pulled from three different kits and never quite matched — a mess of dials and leads nobody had bothered to standardize, because out here nobody had the hours to spare on standardizing anything that still basically worked. She didn’t salute Ferro, which told him something about how this front worked that the last one never had.

”This the one from the transfer file?” she said, crouching to open the crate.

”This is him.” Ferro didn’t offer a name, and neither did she ask for one. ”Whatever you can get me, get me fast. I don’t need a paper you’d stake your career on. I need a number I can plan a squad rotation around.”

She pulled a handheld gauge from the crate — a cylinder with a dial on one end and a lead running to a flat plate on the other — and held it out to him at arm’s length, gripped like she didn’t quite trust it either.

”Hold this. Don’t try to break it on purpose, and don’t hold back either. I need what actually comes out of you, not what you think I want to see.”

The instrument sat cool against his palm for the first few seconds. Then it started to warm, and the needle on its dial began climbing past marks that had numbers printed next to them and into a stretch that didn’t.

The sergeant watched the needle, not him.

”Ease off,” she said, quieter now. ”Just — hold it there a second.”

He held it there. The needle didn’t.

It kept climbing past where he’d stopped adding anything — the same overshoot the glass panels at intake had shown once already, the readout simply catching up to a fact about him that had been true. Something in his chest kept moving after his own effort stopped, a Core-deep pressure finding its own level rather than the one he’d set for it — water settling toward a lower floor whether or not anyone had opened the door for it. Then, with no change he could feel from his own side of it, the needle reversed and dropped through zero into a red band on the far end of the dial he hadn’t noticed until it got there.

The sergeant swore under her breath, set the gauge down, and pulled a second one from the crate.

”That one’s not broken.” Ferro had watched the climb and the reversal both times now, close enough to rule out a loose wire on his own.

”I don’t know what that one is.” She ran the second instrument through the same test. It climbed, spiked, and fell in the identical pattern — past zero, into the same red band, as if the reading itself couldn’t decide which direction it belonged. ”I’ve calibrated forty Class Ones on this front with these exact two units. I have never once seen either of them read negative.”

What does negative mean, on that scale.

”Damned if I know.” She said it not unkindly — closer to a colleague admitting a real gap than an officer covering one. ”Positive’s output. Something coming off you that the plate can measure. Negative’s the plate reading like something’s coming off it instead — like whatever you’re holding is pulling more than it’s giving, and giving anyway. I’ve never had a unit register both in the same three seconds before.”

Ferro crouched beside the crate, picked up the second instrument, and turned it over once in his hands as if a closer look might explain what the dial hadn’t.

”Try it once more,” Ferro said. ”Slower.”

He held the gauge again. This time he tried to give it less — a fraction of what the intake demonstration had asked for, barely more than a held breath’s worth. The needle still climbed past every marked number on the dial before it reversed, and it still fell into the same red band on the way back down, as though the amount he offered had stopped being the variable that mattered.

The sergeant wrote something on her slate without saying it aloud first.

She turned the slate around so Ferro could read it, and after a moment’s hesitation, so could he.

”That’s my whole report,” she said. ”I could dress it up longer, but that’s what it says underneath the dressing.”

Ferro read it twice, unhurried, in the same posture he’d bent over the transfer file the night before — doing arithmetic he suspected he wasn’t going to like the answer to.

”’Anomalous’ again.” He handed the slate back to her. ”Command’s using that word on him twice before he’s fired a shot for us. I’d like it on record that I noticed.”

”Noted.” She was packing the instruments away, done with the part of this that was hers to be done with. ”My own read, sir, since you’re asking — I don’t think it’s broken equipment. I think it’s an honest answer to a question nobody’s built the right question for yet.”

Ferro didn’t say anything to that. He looked at him instead — a longer look than the one from the night before, less like a man reading a file and more like one recalculating a number he’d already written down somewhere important.

”Three days,” Ferro said finally. ”I don’t have time to find out what that reading means before the push. I need to know if it’s going to matter on the day, and nothing in that crate is going to tell me that.”

It might not matter at all. It might matter more than everything else on the file combined.

”That’s not an answer.”

It’s the only one I have.

Ferro held the slate readout a moment longer, then closed it and turned toward the command tent without another word — moving on to the next thing this front didn’t have time to wait on.

The sergeant latched the crate and hauled it up onto one shoulder. She paused before she followed him, long enough to glance back once.

”I’d rather field something I can’t classify than something I can and got wrong,” she said. ”At least yours is being honest about it.”

She was gone before he could have written anything back, even if he’d had something ready.
