Subject Zero: Faceless

The runner found him two days later on the road back from Halstead, out of breath, with a summons that didn’t wait for morning.

Thorne’s office at night looked exactly like Thorne’s office during the day, down to the same stack of requisition forms squared at the same corner of the desk and the same single lamp burning at the same angle.

”Sit if you want. This won’t take the shape of a hearing.” Thorne didn’t look up immediately, finishing a line on the page in front of him. ”Corps finalized the Corvale file’s distribution status this afternoon. It’s not staying a Directorate curriculum item. Command’s pushing it out as a standard case study across every intake program that handles Class II material, effective next quarter.”

Calen said it was required reading here.

”Here, yes. This makes it required everywhere.” Thorne set his pen down. ”Which means somewhere in the paperwork behind that decision, somebody’s going to want a current profile photograph and an updated summary line to attach to it. The version of you that gets shown to techs in postings you’ll never visit, read by people who’ll never once stand in a room with you. I wanted you to hear the reason from me before a form arrived asking for your cooperation as though this were routine.”

Sela, seated at the room’s edge, hadn’t spoken yet.

What name goes on that summary line.

”Ashfall-Zero. It’s the only one Corps has on file for you.” Thorne said it without weight, and looked up properly for the first time since Rook had sat down.

He held the slate up.

Rook.

Thorne set the pen down a second time, more deliberately than the first.

”When did this happen.”

Two days ago. I told her first. A glance toward Sela. Then someone in Halstead.

”Neither of us, then.” Thorne worked through the shape of it rather than reacting to the fact of it. ”You understand what that summary line is actually for. It’s not a courtesy. It’s the sentence Corps uses to explain, to anyone who asks, what you are and why they should trust the file underneath it. ’Ashfall-Zero’ does that work cleanly — a designation, tied to an operation, tied to a numeral nobody’s pretending isn’t still on your record. A name doesn’t do that work at all. A name is a person’s, and Corps doesn’t have a line item for photographing and distributing a person’s name to intake programs he’s never consented to appearing in front of.”

I’m not asking Corps to use it. I’m telling you it exists.

”I understand the distinction. I’m not certain Corps will bother making it.” Thorne exhaled, and for once the flatness carried something closer to strain than to administrative neutrality. ”I’ve spent every posting your file has passed through treating you as an asset, because that framing kept you alive and functional inside a system that doesn’t have a slot for anything gentler. I still believe it did you more good than harm, on balance. But an asset doesn’t choose a name for itself in a market stall and bring it back for me to write down. A person does that. And the moment I write it down anywhere Corps can read it, I’ve stopped being able to pretend the two framings are the same convenient fiction.” He looked, briefly, like a man who’d have preferred not to arrive at that sentence out loud. ”I don’t know yet what I do with that.”

You don’t have to know tonight.

”No. I don’t.” Thorne picked the pen back up without writing anything with it. ”I’m glad you have it. The rest of it is a problem I’ll solve on my own time, not yours.”

He didn’t write anything else until they were well clear of Thorne’s corridor, Sela matching his pace without either of them setting it deliberately.

You expected that.

”I expected some version of it. I didn’t know which version until he said it.” She kept her eyes forward. ”A worse man in that chair would have told you it changed nothing and meant it. Thorne had the decency to admit it changed something he doesn’t know how to solve yet.”

Is that better or worse than an easy answer.

”Harder. Harder’s usually more honest.”

Word of it reached Private Mabry the following afternoon, secondhand and garbled, from a records clerk who’d overheard half a conversation about complications with the summary line. By the time it arrived at her desk it had turned into a rumor that Ashfall-Zero was refusing to cooperate with the file’s distribution. She went and asked him rather than repeat something she wasn’t sure of.

”Is it true you’re causing trouble over the Corvale file?”

Not the file. A name.

She waited, and when nothing more came, pulled a spare requisition slip out of her own jacket pocket and held it out with a pencil.

He wrote it on her slip rather than on his own slate.

Rook.

”Rook.” She said it once aloud, and folded the slip back into her pocket instead of filing it anywhere. ”I used to put people under whatever their intake paperwork said they were. Doing this job’s taught me a name isn’t a complication. It’s the first true thing the paperwork’s ever going to have to make room for.”

He stamped the second plate himself that night, with the stylus he’d kept out of an issue tray weeks earlier and never once used. Four letters took less time than the designation had. He clipped it to the locker door above ASHFALL-ZERO rather than in place of it; the rack was the quartermaster’s business and he had no standing to take anything off it.

The room Thorne’s next summons led him to wasn’t Thorne’s, and it hadn’t been built for the rest of the Directorate either. No requisition forms stacked at a desk’s corner. No slate waiting angled and ready. A low table, two soft chairs facing a third, a window with actual curtains rather than a stop bolted into the frame.

He noticed the curtains before he noticed the woman standing at the window with her back to the door.

”Rook.” She turned before Thorne could make the introduction, the name said with no hitch in it. ”Councilor Adair. I sit on the Accord’s civil oversight council for classified-asset programs. Director Thorne was kind enough to arrange this on short notice, and I know that’s not really how consent is supposed to work in this building, so you can end this conversation at any point, and nothing about your posting changes if you do.”

Sela, seated at the room’s far edge, gave nothing away with her face.

Then why does it need to happen quickly, if I can end it whenever I like.

”Because I’m not stationed here, and I have exactly one afternoon before I’m back in a chamber full of people who’ve never met you and will vote on things that touch your life regardless.” Adair sat, unhurried despite her own words, and gestured him toward the third chair rather than waiting for him to choose it himself. ”There’s a session coming, three weeks from now, on how much of the classified-asset program the Accord discloses to its own citizens going forward. Your Corvale file is already being cited on both sides of that argument — as evidence a program like this can be run humanely, and as evidence it shouldn’t exist in the shape it currently does. I’d rather understand who I’m actually talking about before I sit in that room and let other people describe you to each other.”

You could have read the file for that.

”I have read the file. All of it that reached my desk, twice. Which is a smaller portion of it than you’d think, and a larger portion than most people in that chamber will ever be shown.”

She asked him, for the better part of an hour, what the mask weighed after a full day, whether anyone had ever asked him what he wanted a room to hold rather than what it needed to contain, whether anyone had explained to him what the council session was actually deciding before today. Some of it he answered on the slate. Some of it he let sit, and she let the silence stand without filling it herself.

Near the end, almost as an aside, checking a note rather than looking at him when she said it: ”Your intake summary references a redacted appendix I wasn’t cleared to open. I’d assumed, given how thoroughly the rest of your file’s been documented, that you’d at least been shown your own appendix. Apparently that assumption was wrong.”

I’ve never asked to see it.

She looked up properly then, something briefly unguarded crossing her face before she folded it back into the neutrality she’d worn since the window. ”No,” she said. ”I don’t imagine you have.”

Should I.

It was the first question all afternoon she didn’t answer at speed. ”That’s not mine to tell you. I only came here to make sure that when the council argues about who you are, at least one person in the room has actually sat across from you. What you do with your own history is yours to decide, not a data point for my session.” She stood, gathering a thin folder she’d never once opened in front of him. ”Take that answer from someone who’s spent one afternoon in your company, not a career in your file. It’s worth that much and no more.”

She left without another word to either of them, her pace at the door no different from what it had been crossing to the chair an hour earlier.

Sela waited until the door had fully closed. ”She’s not lying to you. That’s rarer than you’d think, in a room like that one. She’s also not only here for you. Whatever she needs for that council session, she needed it before she ever learned your name existed to ask for.”

You’ve dealt with her kind before.

”Her exact title, twice. Never her.” Sela rose, matching his pace toward the door. ”Councilors rotate through oversight postings faster than anyone actually responsible for you does. Most of them learn just enough to sound informed in a session and then move on to whatever committee looks better on a record. I don’t know yet which kind she is. Neither do you. That’s not a reason to have told her less than you did.”

He didn’t decide to file the request until he was three corridors clear of the room. A stranger with an afternoon to spare had read more of his own record than he had.

Thorne took the request without ceremony the following morning. ”You’re entitled to ask. Whether the answer’s yes is a different office’s decision than mine, and I won’t pretend otherwise.” He filled in the routing line himself rather than handing it to a clerk. ”I’ll walk it through personally. That’s the only part of this I can actually promise you.”

What happens if it’s denied.

”Then you’ll know that too, and we’ll both know what we’re arguing against instead of guessing at it.” Thorne set the form aside, done with it for now. ”I’ve read the same appendix reference in your summary line that caught the councilor’s attention. I don’t know what’s behind it either. I’m telling you that now, unprompted, because the alternative is you finding out later that I did know and said nothing.”

The answer came back two days later, routed through Thorne’s own office as promised, one line long on a form otherwise blank.

[REQUEST DENIED. MATERIAL CROSS-REFERENCED: CYCLE INDEX — DIRECTORATE RESTRICTED, ABOVE ASSET-FILE CLEARANCE.]

He read it twice before he understood what was wrong with it.

Every denial he’d ever been handed had refused him in terms that were about him: insufficient justification, insufficient clearance, a status not yet confirmed. This one didn’t name his clearance. It named an index, a filing system sitting above and apart from whatever ordinary category his own personnel record belonged to, and told him, in the same clinical register every readout used for everything, that his own history was catalogued inside something larger than his history.

Cycle, he thought, and the word arrived with a weight that had nothing to do with how quietly it was written.

He carried the slate back to Thorne’s office, and Thorne read it standing, which he almost never did.

”That’s not the wording I expected. I’ve routed personnel-clearance denials through this desk for three years. I’ve never seen one cite an index instead of a name.”

Neither have I. And I’ve had more denials than most people in this building.

Thorne set the slate down, and for a moment said nothing.

”I’ll ask,” Thorne said finally. ”I won’t promise you an answer. I will promise you I’m not going to let this one sit unasked.”

Rook took the slate back and read the four words on it one more time before he folded it shut — Cycle Index — Directorate restricted.
