Subject Zero: Faceless

The operation’s timeline had slipped once. Corps was arguing over how much latitude ”deliberately elevated difficulty” actually meant to grant a single asset, which gave Marrow’s review room to run its course instead of racing the deployment to catch up with it.

The summons came through Dray rather than a runner, which was itself the first thing worth noticing. She met him outside the command post with a folder under one arm and introduced the woman beside her only as ”Technical Division,” offering nothing further.

”This is a study session,” Dray said, before he could ask. ”They just want to understand what actually happened.”

* * *

The room they used had no table, only a bank of instruments Ashfall-Zero recognized in shape if not in specific make, cousins of the mismatched gauges the field sergeant had run over him back during his first field assessment, but newer, cleaner, built for a controlled setting rather than a rushed field one.

The analyst didn’t waste time on pleasantries. ”Lieutenant Osei’s report describes an inward pull at the moment of the kill. A flash of information. A residue that hasn’t faded in nine days.” She said it the way she’d have read a supply manifest. ”I’d like you to walk me through it again, in your own account, before I tell you what I think it is.”

He gave it to her on the slate, plainly, the same sequence he’d given twice: no reach, no decision, a soldier stopping rather than falling, and then the pull, inward, uninvited, finished by the time he understood it had started.

She read it twice, then set the slate down and looked at him directly for the first time since he’d walked in.

”Do you know what this is?”

No.

”We do. It has a name, and it’s older than your case by a long way — rare enough that most Classified subjects go their whole service without ever manifesting it, common enough that it’s not new to us. We call it Static.” She let the word sit in the room a moment before continuing, as though testing whether it would do anything on its own. It didn’t. It just was, finally, a word instead of a shape he’d had no language for. ”Working theory, going back further than either of us: it’s something taken off a kill rather than spent on one. What Calibration gives you, Static takes. The two aren’t the same resource wearing different names — they’re opposites, running on the same underlying system.”

Then it should have happened on the shelf. He wrote it before he’d finished deciding to. I took an emplacement apart from across a gap. Nothing came back off it.

”No. And that is the question I wanted in your handwriting before I put it in mine.” She turned a page over without looking at it. ”It didn’t come off the emplacement, and it didn’t come off whatever was inside the emplacement. It came off a man who stopped under your hands. Every account we hold says the same thing and not one of them says it plainly, because each of those people had a single case and no reason to see a pattern in it. I have yours and nine others on paper.”

Say it as a rule.

”A working one. Not a proven one.” She set two fingers on the table, one and then the other. ”It takes from a death you cause with your hands on the man. It takes nothing from a death you cause at distance. Calibration goes out of you and is spent, and nothing comes back up a line you have already emptied. A rifle is the same — the round does the work and you were never joined to it. Close enough to touch, and something is joined, and what is on the other end of it comes back.”

And if I never put my hands on anyone again.

”Then on the working theory you never manifest again.” She let that stand exactly as long as it deserved. ”Hold the theory loosely. The residue you are carrying did not all arrive from that crest.”

Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author’s consent. Report any sightings.

Why has nobody used that word around me before now.

”Because nobody was certain enough to use it and be wrong. Osei’s report from the crest is the first clean, well-documented manifestation Meridian’s had in years. Most of what’s in the literature is secondhand, reconstructed after the fact from people who didn’t survive whatever triggered it, or didn’t survive what it did to them afterward. You’re the first live account anyone’s had a chance to actually study.”

How far back does the literature go.

”Further than Meridian. The oldest account we hold is a transcription of a transcription, a border garrison chaplain, two wars ago, writing about a soldier who ’carried the dead too closely.’ The man stopped sleeping, then stopped letting anyone die near him at all. He walked out of a defensible position rather than hold it, twice, and was hanged, after the second, as a deserter.” ”The account’s useless as data. I keep it anyway. It’s the only document we have written by somebody trying to understand the man instead of the mechanism.”

What happened to the ones who survived it longer.

”That’s the gap in the shelf. The literature ends where the interesting questions start. Nobody who wrote about it had a subject who lived long enough, cooperated long enough, or was believed long enough. You’re being asked to be all three at once. I’m aware of what that costs. I’m asking anyway.”

She turned to the instruments, and Dray, silent until now, finally spoke.

”There’s something else,” Dray said. ”Before we get to the instruments. Colonel Marrow’s going to ask this eventually. The Core-suppression charge was never triggered on the crest. Major Ferro held authorization and never used it.”

I know. Nobody’s explained why.

”Because there was nothing to trigger it against. By the time anyone registered what was happening, the man was dead and the moment was already over. The charge stops an active discharge in progress. It has nothing to do the instant after one has finished.” She held the mask’s blank regard. ”I want you to understand that clearly, because the alternative reading, that command simply chose not to use it, isn’t what happened.”

That’s a relief I didn’t know I needed until you said it.

”Most true things are, when they finally get said out loud.”

The instruments took the better part of an hour. Ashfall-Zero sat still while the analyst worked, the same mismatched cold behind his ribs answering every contact point she pressed to his skin, and somewhere in the second half of the session her professional patience thinned, just slightly, into something closer to real attention.

The work itself was undramatic to the point of comedy. Contact plates warmed against his skin and read, a Core-lit loop passed over his sternum at four unhurried speeds, long silences while she compared numbers to other numbers. Twice she asked him to think about the crest, and read whatever the instruments made of his thinking. Once she asked him to deliberately not think about it, which went about as well as could be expected. The residue registered on a single one of her instruments, the loop, and only as an asymmetry — a reading that should have matched on both passes and didn’t, over and over, by an identical margin.

”Your first field assessment,” she said. ”The ’negative’ band. Something being drawn off the plate concurrently with ordinary output. Do you remember it?”

The field sergeant thought the instrument was misreading.

”It wasn’t.” She turned the readout toward him. Two curves, one from that morning, one pulled from the archive of that same first assessment, laid over each other in a way that made the resemblance impossible to argue with. ”This is the same signature. Fainter, back then. Passive. But it’s the same draw, on the same axis, days before you ever consciously pulled anything off a kill.” She set the slate down slowly, testing her own hands for steadiness before she trusted them with it. ”Static didn’t start on that crest. It started before anyone had a name for it.”

* * *

Ashfall-Zero turned that over rather than reach immediately for the slate. The same anomalous reading that had shadowed his file since his first week on this front, filed and forgotten as unclassifiable, had apparently been telling the truth the entire time.

Is it still happening. Right now. Passively.

”I don’t know yet,” the analyst said. ”That’s the honest answer, and I’d rather give you that than a confident one I can’t back up. What I can tell you is that the residue from the crest hasn’t diminished by any measure I can take — not in nine days, which is well past where a deliberate Calibration draw used to fade. Whether residue simply doesn’t fade on that same schedule, or because something about it is still active, drawing in small amounts, I can’t say.”

Then find out.

”That,” she said, ”is precisely what I intend to do.” She closed the folder, the readouts fanned across the table where she’d left them, and for the first time since he’d walked in, the professional distance cracked. Underneath it was something closer to hunger.

”Colonel Marrow is going to want a preliminary summary within the week,” she said. ”I intend to tell him the truth. We finally have a name for what you can do, and considerably less understanding of what it costs you than either of us would like.” She looked at him once more before she left. ”I’d start getting used to being studied. This isn’t the last session.”
