Subject Zero: Faceless

”Long way,” the liaison said, when he noticed the route bending away from the corridor that led back to his room. ”I know. Humor me.”

She had a requisition slip folded in one hand, details she hadn’t bothered explaining. The supply shed sat past the motor pool. There were shorter ways to reach it than through the yard at the end of a duty day, and she’d chosen this one anyway.

”You’ve spent a week in rooms with a table in them,” she said. ”I’d rather you saw one evening that didn’t have one.”

Two days, by his own count, until the demonstration.

The yard at this hour belonged to nobody’s schedule but its own. A radio propped in an open truck bed played something with a rhythm section and no words he recognized. Two soldiers sat on upturned crates trading cards and worse insults.

None of it was for him. That was the entire point.

He saw Voss before she saw him — sleeves pushed up, forearms deep in the undercarriage of a truck that might have been the same one that had carried him from the Foundry’s gate.

She surfaced when a wrench clattered against the concrete, wiped one palm on her trousers, and looked up into an evening that happened to have him standing in it.

”You’re a long way from your usual rooms,” she said — friendlier than the checkpoint had been.

”She’s showing him what a base looks like when nobody’s grading anything,” the liaison said, before he could write anything at all.

”Good luck with that. Half this yard’s grading each other’s poker faces right now.” Voss nodded past him at the crate-and-cards game, dry, and went back under the truck without waiting to see if it landed as a joke.

She jerked her chin at the truck without looking up from it. ”Same one that hauled you out, if you’re wondering. Command wanted it flagged for decommission. I told them it’s got another year in it, so long as nobody keeps dropping jacks on it.” A beat, drier still. ”Don’t repeat that part to whoever signs the paperwork.”

”How’s the side?” She said it into the undercarriage, casual, a mechanic asking after a part she’d once had her hands on. ”The rib line. It was mine before it was medical’s, and medical doesn’t send me updates.”

It kept, he wrote, and held the slate low where she could read it without coming out.

A short sound came from under the truck that might have been a laugh meeting an engine. ”Course it did. Everything about you keeps. It’s the rest of us wearing out over here.”

One of the card players lost a hand loudly enough to dispute it. The radio changed songs without anyone touching it, and the new one was worse, and nobody moved to fix that either. It was, he thought, the most unguarded room he had ever stood in, and it didn’t have walls.

The liaison went to sort her requisition slip against a duty roster pinned outside the supply shed, near enough to still be present, far enough to let the yard be the yard.

The jack gave first — a groan of metal finding a weight it hadn’t quite been braced for — and then the truck’s rear axle dropped four inches onto a support block with a bang loud enough to still every conversation in the yard at once.

His body moved before the sound had finished being a sound.

He was down and turned half away, one forearm already up across himself, before any part of him had decided that ducking was the correct response to a truck settling onto a jack stand. Nothing here had teeth. His body hadn’t waited to find that out.

The motion caught the mask’s edge on his own raised sleeve. He felt it shift before he understood what had shifted — cool air where there shouldn’t have been any, riding low enough on one side that whatever passed for a face underneath it wasn’t fully covered.

Voss was closest. Voss was the one who saw it.

Smooth skin, blank and pale, where an eye should have been set into it and never had been.

He got a hand up and pushed the mask back into place before a full second had passed. By the time the yard’s noise came back up, everyone else’s attention had slid back to the truck.

Voss’s stayed where it was.

Across the yard, Bram had gone still over his own hand of cards, watching openly for once — no rifle to raise off duty, one hand resting on the crate where a rifle would have been. Then he looked back down without a word, the same answer he’d been giving since the truck ride out of the Foundry’s ruins. A minute later he folded the hand, said something to the other player that got a laugh he didn’t stay for, and left the yard by the far gate, on the side that kept the truck between them the whole way out.

Voss came out from under the truck and crouched in front of him at exactly the distance she’d have used for anyone else in this yard.

”You all right?”

You saw.

”I did. Wasn’t much to see. You want to know something — half this base has scars they don’t show anybody. Yours is just further up than most people keep theirs.”

She turned her own forearm over, where a burn the size of a palm sat below the elbow, gone shiny with age. ”Exhaust manifold, second year in. I show mine to nobody, and I’d thank you to forget I made an exception.”

She reached over, without asking, and set the mask’s edge properly against his temple herself. ”There.” She stood, picked her wrench back up, and looked at him a moment longer. ”For something they built to scare people, you’re doing a real bad job of it.”

Then she was back under the axle, humming off-key along with the radio.

The liaison found him before the corridor lights had finished coming up the next morning, which told him something before she said a word.

”Tomorrow,” she said. ”The colonel confirmed the room this morning. There’s somewhere else I need you first.”

The room she took him to had no plaque on the door — a narrow space crowded with equipment he didn’t recognize, and a single chair angled toward a waist-high plate of dark, faintly warm glass. A man sat beside it, a loupe pushed up onto his forehead and a stack of blank composite sheets squared at his elbow.

”This is the analyst who reviewed your intake interview,” the liaison said. ”He asked to see you before the colonel signed off on it.”

”I read the transcript,” the man said, without preamble. ”You told the colonel Habit and left it there. I’ve read a few hundred of those transcripts, and nine times in ten, when a man leaves a word like that standing where it is, the word is standing on a person. I’m not here to make you explain it. I’m here because if there is a face under it, it doesn’t have to be only yours to carry anymore — if you want it to stop being only yours.”

”If we get something usable,” he went on, ”it goes into records. A search, run against refugee registries, resettlement rolls. If there’s a woman matching it anywhere those records reach, we’ll likely find her eventually.”

Yes, he wrote.

The plate answered to description as nothing in eleven years ever had — patient, uncomplaining, willing to be wrong forty times before it was allowed to be right. A scatter of freckles, denser across one cheek than the other. A single chipped corner on an upper canine, visible only in a smile pulled a certain direction. The smile took longest of anything. It settled, finally, on sideways, like she’d started to say something else instead and changed her mind mid-laugh. A thin, pale line through the left eyebrow, cutting the brow at a slant he could have measured with a ruler.

Twelve degrees off horizontal, he wrote, when the plate asked.

Once, the analyst asked him something the plate itself never would have: where she’d been standing, what season it looked like behind her, how old she might have been. He found there was nothing there to answer with — no room, no weather, no age. There had only ever been the face, held apart from everything else.

I don’t know. He wrote it without dressing it up, and the analyst made a small note and moved on.

”Most people give me a direction,” the analyst said. ”’Slanted down,’ ’crooked.’ You measured it. There’s normally noise in it — a witness second-guessing a jawline. Yours hasn’t moved once since we started.”

The finished likeness came together in under an hour, faster than the analyst said any composite session he’d run had ever gone.

He held it out flat, the way a man hands over something he’s decided is no longer his to hold. ”Most of what comes through this room is grief wearing a face. Witnesses rebuilding somebody they lost, and you can see the losing in the linework.” He tapped the sheet’s corner once, professional. ”Yours doesn’t sit like that. Yours sits like somebody you’re still expecting.”

He had no answer for that on him. He took the sheet.

The liaison walked him back through the yard at dusk, quieter than her usual pace. The motor pool had emptied to its night shape — the radio gone, the crates stacked, somebody’s forgotten mug standing sentry on a fender. ”Good session?” she asked, and then, before he could reach for the slate: ”You don’t have to grade it. I’m asking what a person asks.”

He wrote nothing, and she nodded as though that had been an answer, because by now, between them, it was.

”I want this to find her, if she’s out there to find,” she told him. ”I also want you to understand that if command decides your provisional status hinges on what a search like this turns up — or doesn’t — I won’t be the one deciding that.”

He watched her go, then let himself into the room that had a table but no colonel in it tonight, and set the finished plate down on the surface where a slate usually sat.

He looked at it a long while before his own habit decided for him — the same reflex that turned the Sight on every face he passed in a corridor, trained now, without asking his permission, on a sheet of paper with her face rendered onto it in fine grey lines.

Nothing came back.

Every face he had ever turned the Sight on had answered him with something — fear, calculation, the plain arithmetic of a room deciding what he was worth. This one gave him silence, flat and total, identical to what came back when he aimed the Sight at a wall, or a door, or anything that had never held a person’s truth to read in the first place.

Paper isn’t a face. The thought arrived reasonable and immediate, and he let it stand.

He set the plate face-down on the table before he could look at it again.
