Subject Zero: Faceless

The summons came without her this time — a slate slid under the door instead of a person, blunt black text on a background that hadn’t bothered to soften itself: CLASSIFICATION REVIEW, 0900, ROOM 4. ATTENDANCE MANDATORY.

The liaison caught up to him in the second corridor, faster than her usual steady pace.

”I’m not coming in for this one,” she said. ”Board sessions close to anyone without a seat on the board. I asked this morning anyway. Got told no in a tone that meant don’t ask twice.”

What is a classification review, he wrote.

”Exactly what it sounds like. Somebody looks at your provisional status and decides whether it still fits. Two somebodies, from what I’ve heard. They don’t always agree.” She stopped at a plainer door, and a guard who didn’t check a list this time, because this list already had him on it.

”Whatever they ask,” she said, quickly, before the gap widened enough for anyone inside to hear it, ”answer like a man with nothing to lose by being honest.”

The door closed between them before she could say anything else.

Room 4 held less light than the interview room and more people than any room had held for him yet — four, seated at a long table, a slate mounted at its center.

[GRADE ASSESSMENT: PROVISIONAL — CLASS I / SUBJECT. STATUS UNDER REVIEW.]

He knew the colonel by the set of her shoulders before he placed her face. Beside her sat a man he didn’t know: broad through the chest in a way rank alone didn’t explain, a brigadier’s insignia angled toward the light like he’d positioned his own collar on purpose.

The other two seats held a records officer with a stack of printed incident reports squared in front of her, each report tabbed in a different color, and an older man with no insignia he could read, who spent the session watching hands rather than faces — his, the colonel’s, the brigadier’s — as though testimony were something people gave mostly by accident. Nobody introduced either of them. Their names, he understood, were not the point of them.

The brigadier didn’t wait for a formal opening.

”Four rifles in a holding room.” Short sentences, no wasted breath on any of them — a man who’d clearly decided somewhere along the way that a case argued without ornament was a case argued well. ”A ward tripped by what he did, on his first night in custody. Before that, a Foundry security element hit his own transport convoy forty minutes off the compound wall — organized, unit-marked, there to take him back rather than kill him — and he put three of them down with his bare hands before a Meridian rifle ever fired a shot in his defense. Before that, he disarmed a hostile combatant during his own extraction, before any trained soldier in that corridor registered a threat. I’ve read all three reports. A subject who reacts that fast, that competently, under three separate kinds of pressure, is not a subject. He’s an asset wearing a provisional tag because nobody’s finished the paperwork.”

”Twenty minutes off the wall, not forty,” the colonel said, even and level. ”I’ve read the same three reports. And the squad’s rifleman had emptied half a magazine into the near slope before he moved — it’s in the same paragraph you’re quoting from. If this board is going to grade him on incidents, it can at least grade the incidents that happened.” She let the correction sit a moment. ”Incident data isn’t assessment data. He reacted to three different threats in three different ways. One saved a medic’s life. One was a man finding the only door left to him after nobody answered a knock. One was combat, plain and armed, the one version of this any soldier in this building would call obvious rather than ambiguous — and it’s the only one of the three where nobody’s arguing about what he did, only about what it means that he could. You’re building a single conclusion out of three facts that don’t all agree with each other.”

”They agree on the only point that matters. He’s dangerous, and he’s fast, and nobody in this building can currently tell me which situation makes him decide to be either.” The brigadier didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. ”That’s also consistent with the compound’s own recovered records — four more processing cycles scheduled for him, a second facility standing by, and now an armed retrieval team on the open road proving somebody still considered him worth spending soldiers to get back. Somebody thought escalating him was worth it, right up until the people escalating him ran out of building to do it in. They haven’t run out of men yet, apparently.”

”Then the threat you’ve documented is pointed at him,” the colonel said. ”An armed element crossed contested ground under orders to take him back breathing. That makes him the most hunted thing this command has recovered since the war went quiet. You’re reading a kidnapping attempt as evidence about the victim.”

”I’m reading it as evidence about the price somebody is still willing to pay.” The brigadier laid three fingers on the table, one at a time, unhurried. ”A knife. Rope. A ward. Three incidents before his first sunrise in Meridian custody. I don’t need them to agree with each other. I need this board to notice they keep happening wherever he’s standing — and that the one organization that knew him best budgeted soldiers to bring him back rather than a round to make sure nobody else could. They know something about his value we don’t. I’d rather we learn it under restriction than after.” He looked, for the first time, at the two silent seats rather than the colonel. ”And this board should understand what it’s writing. Whatever number goes on that slate today is the number every other Foundry recovery gets measured against. There are other files. I’ve read those too. I’d like the first one decided by someone who’s read them all.”

”Under restriction, we learn what the Foundry learned — that he complies. Eleven years of their own documentation says that lesson teaches nothing worth having.” She let that stand a moment. ”And if his loyalties are the open question, consider what this morning looks like from his chair. The first institution to put rifles around him since the extraction is ours.”

”Rifles he’s given a room reason to raise twice.”

”Rifles that have yet to be needed once.”

”And when this board is asked, later, why it sat across a table from the Foundry’s best work and voted for patience?”

”Then I’d rather answer for patience than explain to a wider war how Meridian finished what the Dominion started.”

One of the two silent board members wrote something down at that, and did not look up.

He turned the Sight on the writer while the pen was still moving, and read less than he expected — not conviction, not alarm, just a careful, bank-teller neutrality, tallying the argument like it was somebody else’s money. Whatever this board decided, the two people arguing loudest were not the ones keeping its books.

”Run the Controlled Demonstration properly, under controls, with people who know what they’re measuring,” the colonel said. ”Until then, incidents aren’t a Grade. They’re a Grade standing in for somebody’s fear.”

The brigadier turned to him for the first time since he’d sat down.

”You reached a channel nobody authorized. What would you call that, if you were being honest about it?”

He held the stylus a moment. Watchful, he wrote. That’s the word. This room can spend it however it needs to.

The brigadier read it and didn’t respond right away.

He turned the Sight on the man while the room sat with what he’d written. What he found under the brigadier’s stillness was calculation, already certain how the morning needed to end, and underneath that, something quieter: less worry about him than about being wrong about him, in a room built to remember whoever was.

”He wrote watchful,” the brigadier said, to the colonel, dismissing him from the conversation as completely as the corporal had, days ago. ”That’s the word a controlled subject reaches for. It’s also the word a patient one uses while it decides the room isn’t worth the cost yet.”

”You’re describing two different subjects with the same evidence,” the colonel said. ”Call it what it actually is — a Rorschach test with a rank attached.”

”Fine. Then let’s put it where it belongs. Schedule the Controlled Demonstration. And restrict him in the meantime — no unsupervised corridors, no liaison contact without a second officer present.”

”Denied on the movement restriction.” The colonel said it before the sentence had finished landing. ”We don’t punish a provisional status for lacking data we haven’t collected. Schedule your demonstration — I’ll sign the order today. Everything else stays as it is until this board has something better than an argument to stand on.”

[GRADE ASSESSMENT: PROVISIONAL — CLASS I / SUBJECT. CONTROLLED DEMONSTRATION SCHEDULED. NO CHANGE TO STATUS PENDING RESULT.]

The brigadier stood first, gathering nothing. ”Grade is a number on a slate,” he said, close now, low. ”I don’t need the slate to tell me what I watched a room do to a private two nights ago. You’ll get your number eventually. I’ll still be here when it says something you don’t want it to.”

He left without waiting for one.

The liaison was outside where the door had left her.

”Status held,” she said, reading it off him before he’d lifted the slate.

They’re running the Controlled Demonstration. Soon.

”What did they get from you?”

One word. He turned the slate so she could read the second line as he wrote it. It was even true.

”That’s one more than I’d have given them,” she said, and something under the dryness sounded almost like approval.

”He’ll ask again. Men like that don’t lose an argument. They reschedule it.”
