Subject Zero: Faceless

They moved out at full dark, eleven of them threading a route Renner’s team had mapped from imagery nobody at the Ninth Front had seen until an hour before departure, Third Squad on point and rear guard, the second element’s four operators carrying the breach charges between them like something that could be woken up by a bad step. Ashfall-Zero walked near the middle of the column, where Renner wanted him, close enough to reach quickly and far enough back that nothing forward of the point man would find him first.

Wren fell in beside him at the first rest halt, the way she’d started doing without comment sometime after the rifle range. Hollis took the position across from him without being told to, which was its own kind of statement even now. Ilsen and Cade flanked the second element’s unfamiliar faces, professional and wordless, the way soldiers watched anyone they hadn’t bled next to yet.

Renner’s scout came back down the column during the halt, checking spacing on his own initiative, a compact corporal, quiet, who introduced himself to Third Squad’s end of the line as Doss and shook nobody’s hand. He carried a brass compass on a lanyard worn soft with handling, older than any piece of issued kit on him, and checked it against Renner’s map more often than the map probably deserved.

”It reads two degrees west of true,” he told Wren, when he caught her watching him do it. ”Has since before it was mine. I know its error, which is more than I can say for the map.” He nodded once toward the dark ahead of them. ”Imagery’s a rumor until somebody walks the ground. That’s the whole job. I walk the ground.”

”And when the ground disagrees with the rumor?” Wren asked.

”Then I’m the first to know.” He said it without any weight on it, a man stating the terms of his employment, and moved back up the column counting his own paces as he went, a habit, by the look of it, older than the compass.

A full night’s movement, Ashfall-Zero wrote to no one in particular, testing the size of it. We haven’t gone this far from the wire since the transport in.

Wren read it over his shoulder and didn’t disagree.

The river crossing was missing from Renner’s map, a shallow ford two hours in, where the terrain funneled anyone moving toward Corvale from this approach, precisely the kind of chokepoint a competent survey would have flagged and routed around. Doss found it the hard way, walking the ground the imagery had skipped, stepping down the bank into ankle-deep water that dropped to his chest three strides later, loud enough in the dark to be heard, if anything nearby had been listening for it.

Something had been listening for it.

The first shots came from the far bank, close and immediate, no warning shout, no challenge, the kind of contact that meant a patrol already in position rather than one stumbled into by chance. Osei’s hand signal cut through the column before anyone needed to be told twice: down, spread, return fire on her mark. Ashfall-Zero went flat into the reeds beside Wren, rifle up, the old drilled motions taking over before conscious thought caught up to them.

How many, he wrote against his knee, angled so only Wren could read it.

Can’t tell yet. More than a two-man patrol. Too coordinated for that.

It lasted four minutes by Ashfall-Zero’s count, which felt considerably longer from inside it. Osei’s return fire found the muzzle flashes on the far bank and thinned them fast — Aldern Ridge had given Third Squad practice at this kind of fight, and it showed. What it couldn’t undo was the ford itself, and the fact that the ambush had been sited on it with enough precision to suggest whoever built it had known which route Renner’s imagery would eventually recommend.

Doss went down in the water before he’d cleared it. A round took him low in the chest, one round, out of the dozens crossing the ford in both directions, and afterward nobody could say which burst it had belonged to. He didn’t call out. The river did it for him, the sound of a man’s weight going in wrong, and then one of Renner’s operators was in the water to his waist, hauling him back toward the near bank by the drag strap while Osei’s fire walked the far bank into silence above them both.

They got him up into the reeds. Wren reached him in seconds, dressing kit open before her knees hit the mud, and needed most of a minute to accept what the first of those seconds had told her. The wound was small. That was the obscene part, a man mapped and trained and carried across four years of this front, and the difference between him walking out of the water and this fit inside a fingertip.

Renner knelt beside him only as long as confirmation took. She unclipped the compass from his kit before anyone thought to stop her, closed it into her breast pocket without looking at it, and stood.

”Keep moving,” she said. Nothing else. Grief deferred to a later hour, with the practiced efficiency of someone who had done this before and would do it again before the mission ended.

Nobody moved for a second anyway. Ilsen looked at the water. Wren looked at Doss’s boots, still crossed at the ankle where the drag had left them, and then at nothing. Cade took two steps toward the body, stopped, and took the rear-guard position instead, because that was the version of standing over him that still helped anyone.

They wrapped him in his own ground sheet and carried him twenty meters up from the waterline, into the reeds. Cade cut a strip from the sheet’s edge and tied it to a reed stem above the high-water mark — a marker no map would show and any recovery detail would find, if the mission left anyone in a position to send one. It took four minutes. Osei gave the four minutes without being asked for them, and looked at her watch only once.

Wren, rising from beside the ground sheet, spoke to the reeds rather than to anyone. ”I never asked what his first name was.” Nobody in Third Squad had.

”Tomas,” said the operator who’d gone into the water after him, from the dark, and said nothing else. Four hours had felt like enough time for the rest of it to keep. It turned out nothing out here kept.

One of Renner’s operators, the one who’d gone into the water after him, walked the next hour checking his own spacing twice as often as before, filling, without seeming to know he was doing it, the space where a pace-counting man used to be.

They crossed a quarter mile downstream instead, at a point Cade found by feel rather than any map, and pushed on into terrain that felt, to Ashfall-Zero, less like ground they were moving through and more like ground that had been waiting for them to arrive.

On the far side, Osei counted the column across, one hand lifting a fraction with each head that passed her — a habit nobody had ever seen her miss. He was last over, and by the time he reached her the hand had stopped at ten and stayed there, half-raised, holding an eleventh count with nowhere to put it. She caught him seeing it. She didn’t pretend he hadn’t.

”Four hours,” she said, low, not for anyone else. ”I knew that man four hours, and my hand’s still going to be looking for him at every crossing between here and the wire.” She dropped the hand and turned back up the trail, lieutenant again before the turn finished. ”Interval. We’re bunching.”

Renner fell in beside him near the new crossing, voice level in a way that cost her something to hold. ”That ford wasn’t a coincidence. Whoever’s running Corvale’s perimeter knew a force our size, coming from our direction, would eventually be routed through it — which means either our approach route leaked, or Corvale’s intelligence is better than anything on this front has admitted, exactly the thing you’re here to help us prove.” She didn’t look at him when she said the next part. ”Doss was good at his job. He didn’t die because anyone was careless. He died because the map was wrong in a way nobody could have caught from imagery alone.”

I’m sorry.

”Save it for after. We’ve got five hours of movement left and a target that just told us, before we’ve even seen it, that it’s better defended than command’s own paperwork believed.” She looked back once, toward the ford lost to the dark behind them. ”Marrow said command no longer believed this was the operation we signed up for. I didn’t expect it to start proving him right before we’d covered three miles.”
