Subject Zero: Faceless

Authorization came through on a Thursday, which meant nothing to anyone except that the waiting was finally over. Ferro found Ashfall-Zero at the motor pool fence, where he’d taken to standing some evenings once the last convoy of the day had gone quiet, and didn’t bother with a runner or a slate summons. ”Command post. Now. Marrow’s here in person, which should tell you something already.”

It told him several things, none of them comfortable. Marrow didn’t travel to a forward post to deliver good news by messenger; he came when a briefing needed a face attached to it, in case anyone in the room wanted someone to hold responsible later.

The command tent held more people than any briefing Ashfall-Zero had sat through since the mission brief for Aldern Ridge. Marrow at the head of the table, Ferro and Osei flanking him, Sergeant Reyes standing near the door with a single-page fitness assessment she hadn’t handed over yet, and a Corps officer introduced only as Major Renner, Corps Intelligence Directorate, distinct enough from Dray’s Asset Compliance chain that Ferro’s jaw tightened slightly at the introduction and said nothing about it.

”The objective is the Corvale relay,” Marrow said, without preamble, and set a terrain photograph on the table, a fortified junction dug into a valley wall, well behind the line Third Squad had ever operated past. ”Signals analysis puts it at the center of a pattern this front has been feeding you pieces of since your first week here. Every position that’s had foreknowledge it shouldn’t have had — the listening post that relocated ahead of schedule, the emplacement that knew exactly where your squad would cross, the reinforcement that nearly beat you to the crest — routes back to a coordination hub with better intelligence than anyone across this front has been willing to admit. Corvale is the leading candidate.”

That’s the mission Corps approved in exchange for the harder test.

”It’s the same authorization,” Marrow confirmed. ”Elevated difficulty, full after-action review, as filed. What’s changed is the shape of it, and I’d rather you hear that from me directly than discover it in the field.” He didn’t soften the next part. ”Scout imagery came back three days ago showing Corvale reinforced well past what the original tasking assumed. A second defensive ring, a garrison roughly double the estimate, and terrain that puts you a full night’s movement past any position Third Squad has ever operated from. Command still believes the objective is achievable. Command no longer believes it’s the operation you were told you were signing up for.”

Osei’s face didn’t change, which Ashfall-Zero had learned by now was how she looked when something had actually landed.

The photograph told its own version. The valley ran narrow and steep-walled, the relay dug into the western face where morning shadow would hold longest; the second defensive ring showed as a stitching of fresh earthworks a scout’s annotations had numbered in a hand that got smaller as the numbers went up. No road in. One river, unbridged, feeding the valley from the north. Everything about the ground said the people holding it had chosen it for how expensive it would be to approach, and had then, recently and quickly, spent more to make it worse. Ferro studied the annotations longest, said nothing about them in front of the room, and smoothed the photograph’s corner down in a manner that suggested he intended to say something about them later, to somebody, in a smaller room.

Major Renner spoke for the first time, and something in the register — clinical, unhurried, the calm of someone reading from a brief they’d written themselves rather than one handed to them — reminded Ashfall-Zero of every status card that had ever been issued about him. ”Given the scale, Third Squad won’t be going in alone. I’m attaching a second element, four operators, my own command, specializing in the kind of breach-and-destroy work Corvale’s actual objective requires. Third Squad’s role is to get us there and hold the perimeter while we do it.” She looked at Ashfall-Zero directly for the first time. ”And to answer the obvious question: yes, you’re coming, and yes, that’s the entire reason Corps approved a mission this size on this short a timeline. A single Classified asset who can put a controlled strike through a fortified position changes what’s survivable here. Sergeant Reyes’s assessment is the reason Corps believes that’s a repeatable asset rather than a one-time fluke.”

Reyes finally stepped forward and set her single page on the table without comment on Renner’s framing of it. Marrow read it, nodded once, and slid it toward Ferro.

”Before that page travels any further,” Reyes said, not moving from the door, ”it says what he can do on a range. Rested, with me standing next to him, and nothing shooting back. It was never written to hold up a mission plan.”

”Noted, Sergeant,” Renner said, and did not amend the plan.

One controlled use. A second, if I have to, at a cost nobody’s tested past the range.

”Understood, and logged,” Renner said, in a tone that made clear it changed nothing about the plan built around him. ”We’ll try not to need it twice.”

Osei spoke for the first time since the photograph had gone down on the table. ”Command relationship in the field. If your element and my squad want two different things at the same bad moment, whose call carries?”

”Mine, for anything touching the objective. Yours, for anything touching your people.” Renner paused, and had the grace not to dress the pause up as anything but what it was. ”Where those overlap, Lieutenant, we find out at the bad moment. I’ve never once seen a command annex settle that in advance, and I’m not going to insult you by promising this one will.”

”No,” Osei agreed, in a voice that promised nothing back. ”You’re not.”

It was, oddly, the first thing Renner had said all briefing that seemed to land in Osei’s favor. Honest ignorance, delivered without decoration, was a currency Third Squad’s lieutenant recognized. The two women exchanged a look that wasn’t warmth and wasn’t hostility, two professionals pricing each other’s word, and finding it, provisionally, worth face value.

He held up the slate before the room could move on.

The suppression charge. Ferro holds the authorization. He isn’t on this roster.

It was Marrow who answered, not Renner, a detail Ashfall-Zero filed without comment. ”No, he isn’t, and nobody’s reassigned it.” He said it without dressing it up. ”Corps Intelligence’s chain of custody covers the mission itself. It was never built to cover a device keyed to one specific officer’s authorization who happens to be staying behind on this one. That’s an oversight, not a decision, and I’m noting it as one rather than pretending otherwise.”

So nobody holds it in the field.

”Nobody holds it in the field,” Marrow said. ”There isn’t time before you leave to requisition a new authorization chain, and handing it to someone in this tent who’s never held it before isn’t obviously safer than leaving it as it is. I’d rather you go in knowing that than find it out cold, same as you did with the last one.” He didn’t elaborate further.

Ferro walked him out afterward, past the motor pool, further than the conversation strictly required. ”Renner’s not wrong about the math,” he said finally. ”But I’ve run enough operations to know when a plan’s confidence outpaces its intelligence. Corvale’s reinforcement came back three days ago and the mission didn’t get scrubbed or delayed. It got attached to you instead. That should tell you something too.”

It tells me they’d rather spend me than the timeline.

”It tells me somebody decided this was worth the risk before they knew what the risk was,” Ferro said. ”I’ve flagged it. I don’t have the rank to do more than that.”

Does flagging it change anything.

”It changes what’s in the file when somebody asks, afterward, why nobody objected. That’s not nothing. It’s also not much, and I’d rather you knew which of those it was.” He stopped at the edge of the wire, where the ridge Third Squad had bled for was just visible as a dark line against a darker sky. ”Insertion’s in two nights. Get what rest you can. Whatever Corvale actually is, it isn’t going to be the mission Marrow described in that tent. It’s going to be worse, the same way every mission out here has been worse than the version they hand you first.”

Ashfall-Zero didn’t need Ocular Bypass to know Ferro believed what he was saying. In every briefing since the Ninth Front had first taken him in, Ferro had never once undersold a threat, and had always, eventually, undersold it anyway, a pattern worth trusting more than any of Corps’s confidence.
