Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

It wasn’t until the sixth day of February that Kong Menglin went back to work, with the scar on her face healed.

That morning, she got up to make breakfast, consisting of corn porridge and pickled vegetables.

It’s not that she didn’t want to make something better, but she had no more food supplies.

The four sat in silence eating together, and after the two children finished, ”We’re going to school.”

Cheng Changsheng drove Kong Menglin to work; neither exchanged a word during the journey.

Upon entering the Women’s Federation office, everyone inside was looking at her.

Meng Xiu Fen came in at that moment. ”Meng Lin, is your health better?”

”Aunt Meng, I’m better now, thank you for your concern.”

In fact, Meng Xiu Fen had visited Kong Menglin twice during the past month.

She also advised her to be cautious after returning to work, because there’s no such thing as a wall that doesn’t let the wind through, and there were already dissatisfied people, although nothing had erupted due to Kong Demin’s presence.

Kong Menglin carefully navigated through the week without any difficulty from anyone, as everyone knew Kong Demin was about to get a promotion.

On Friday evening, the two children rode their bikes back to their old home, leaving Kong Menglin feeling uneasy, though she kept it to herself.

Mom once said, children this big are hard to keep close.

With just the two of them left that night, not a word was exchanged. Over the weekend, they did their own things, not disturbing each other.

Come Monday, the orders for transfer and appointment arrived. Kong Demin became the Director of the County’s Revolutionary Committee. The former director, Feng Dequan, was transferred to the city’s Revolutionary Committee as the office director.

Everyone congratulated him, ”This is the support from everyone for my work. Thank you all, let’s work together in the future to do real deeds for the country and the people.”

Feng Dequan also smiled as he shook hands with Kong Demin, ”Congratulations, Director Kong.”

”Congratulations to you too, Director Feng; please support each other in work going forward.”

”Certainly, most definitely.”

”I won’t stay long; I’m heading to the city to report today.”

”Let Xiao Wang send you both off, wishing Director Feng a successful career.”

After exchanging pleasantries, Feng Dequan had packed up his belongings, and left with Shi Yubei for the city to report.

Kong Demin’s belongings were also moved to the director’s office. Sitting behind the desk, he felt overjoyed, but he knew the work must carry on.

His first order of business was to appoint Han Xiaohong as his secretary, a woman he had long coveted.

The second order was to appoint Wang Dajiang as the head of the inspection team.

The original head, Cheng Changsheng, was demoted to a team member.

Upon hearing the news, Cheng Changsheng was utterly shocked—how could he demote his own brother-in-law now?

He rushed into Kong Demin’s office.

”Director Kong, why is this?”

”Why? Just look at the report against you; do you think you can still remain as team head? Cheng Changsheng, you’ll have to find a way in the future.”

Cheng Changsheng was indignant but didn’t dare make a scene, leaving with great frustration.

Seeing the delighted Wang Dajiang, he felt hatred in his heart—he couldn’t accept this.

It seemed he had to let things go; he must curry favor with Kong Menglin, or who knew when he could climb back up?

At that moment, Kong Menglin was summoned to the office by Meng Xiu Fen, ”Meng Lin, what’s your view on Cheng Changsheng’s demotion?”

”Why?”

”Your second brother knew you wouldn’t understand. This was a decision jointly made by your dad and second brother for your future, so if Cheng Changsheng really prospers, even your second brother wouldn’t be able to control him. Do you think he’d still want you then?”

Kong Menglin wasn’t foolish; she immediately grasped the situation.

”Aunt, I understand now; this way is better, preventing him from looking down on and abandoning me in the future.”

”It’s good you’ve come to terms with it; your second brother will arrange for your promotion, so we can all be assured of your future career.”

”Alright, thank you, Aunt. I’ll go back and tell my second brother I understand his intentions.”

Meng Xiu Fen saw Kong Menglin off, her face immediately dropping; Kong Demin truly still had ulterior motives. No way, she couldn’t let Han Xiaohong be with him, or she’d have nothing left for herself and the children.

She sat in her chair, worried about what to do.

During lunch, she happened to stand behind Han Xiaohong, building up courage for quite some time before deciding to speak frankly.

”Secretary Han, could you come to my office after lunch? I have something important to tell you.”

”Who are you?”

”I’m Director Meng of the Women’s Federation.”

”Okay, I’ll come find you after lunch.”

Meng Xiu Fen was restless in her office, somewhat regretting her earlier impulse. But if she didn’t do so, once Kong Demin remarried, she’d be just his former mother-in-law, and she couldn’t accept that.

Changjun, although capable of speaking and running, was mentally impaired; how would he manage without Kong Demin’s protection?

Zheng Xiuxiang, being obedient, wouldn’t abandon her even if they married and had a son in the future.

Furthermore, if Zheng Xiuxiang dared to have any misconduct, she possessed leverage against her.

As she was lost in thought, the door was knocked.

”Secretary Han, please have a seat.”

”Director Meng, you wanted to see me for something?”

Meng Xiu Fen moved closer to Han Xiaohong, ”Secretary Han, let me ask you a question first.”

”Go on.”

”Do you have someone special? Planning to marry soon?”

”I don’t have anyone.”

”I see, Secretary Han; are you aware of my relationship with Kong Demin?”

”Mother-in-law and son-in-law relationship.”

”Correct. Do you know why Kong Demin wants you as his secretary?”

Han Xiaohong went silent, just staring at Meng Xiu Fen.

”Secretary Han, do you think you could marry Kong Demin?”

Han Xiaohong shook her head, ”No, he’s too old, and I don’t like his type.”

”Then I advise Secretary Han not to be a secretary. I’m telling you, Kong Demin has ulterior motives for you; consider it. He noticed you the moment you arrived.

Of course, I’m telling you this for personal reasons. My son is only two years old; he’ll need support in the future, as I’m no longer young.”

”Director Meng, do you mean Director Kong is interested in me?”

”Yes, Secretary Han, you’re young and unfamiliar with men. If they’re focused on you, they’ll find ways to have you. If you’re truly uninterested, you’re in danger. This isn’t alarmist; discuss it with family.”

Han Xiaohong’s joy at being appointed secretary clouded her judgment, but Meng Xiu Fen’s words brought her back to reality.

Her family had connections, so if she quit now, she could find another job. Thinking of Kong Demin’s gaze made her feel uneasy. No way, she’d resign tomorrow; she didn’t need unnecessary trouble.
