Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Kong Mengjie furrowed her brows and sighed, ”I know it won’t be easy, but I’ll visit my second brother’s house in the next couple of days to ask. It’s definitely better than our textile factory.”

Regarding family matters, Kong Mengjie was quite satisfied to see Huang Hongwei so invested.

She was unaware that this was a display of the man’s love; he was willing to care for her family but remained indifferent to his ex-wife and their two children.

That evening, Kong Mengjie passionately responded to Huang Hongwei, rendering him pleasantly surprised and even more convinced that Kong Mengjie should be cherished.

The next day after work, Kong Mengjie went straight to Kong Demin’s house, where a rather pretty girl opened the door.

”Mengjie, what brings you here?”

”Second Brother, I have something to discuss with you. Where’s Auntie? I want to see the children.”

”Who’s here? Mengjie? Hurry up and come in.”

Upon seeing the child who bore a five-point resemblance to her second brother, Kong Mengjie was startled and immediately hypothesized what might be the case, though she did not show it.

”Auntie, this child is thriving.”

”Yes, Xiao Xiang may be still a child, but she is excellent at taking care of children; Yu Jing has gained weight.”

”Auntie.”

”Yu Jing, do you want to come over to my house to play with your cousin?”

”Yes, yes! I want to stay at your place for a few days.”

”Yu Jing, it’s better to come over on Saturday; your aunt doesn’t have time to take you to school.”

”Auntie, come pick me up Friday night.”

Kong Mengjie nodded with a smile; her niece indeed had improved a lot. Though only three years old, she was exceptionally clever.

”Mengjie, do you have something to discuss?”

”Auntie, it’s like this: my younger brother and sister will graduate next year, and my parents want me to find them jobs at the textile factory. But we approached the deputy factory director yesterday, and there’s simply no way to fit more people in.

I was thinking of asking my second brother; the Revolutionary Committee is presumably better than where we are. I just don’t know if it’s possible.”

Kong Demin sat naturally on the kang, as if it were his own room, showing no discord.

”Mom talked to me about it. Frankly, I don’t want them coming here; it’s not good. Still, if the textile factory really doesn’t work out, I’ll think of something.”

”Alright, Second Brother, if there’s anything, just let me know.”

”Sure, come over Friday night to pick Yu Jing for a stay.”

Meng Xiu Fen invited Kong Mengjie to dinner but was turned down, ”My family doesn’t know I came over and must be worried.” Actually, it was just an excuse; Huang Hongwei knew she was over.

Kong Mengjie felt uncomfortable staying there. It was especially distressing if that child was indeed her second brother’s, suggesting they got together after his wife passed away, which was somewhat unacceptable.

Soon she got home, and the father and son had already prepared dinner, waiting for her.

”Going forward, you should eat by yourselves; don’t wait for me.”

After the three finished eating and cleaned up, Tiantian went next door to sleep, leaving her husband and herself in the room.

”My second brother said he’d come up with a solution, which reassured me.”

”That’s good. As long as they got to the county.”

”Mm, how is your second brother’s brother-in-law?”

Kong Mengjie hesitated briefly before finally expressing her suspicion to her husband.

”Hongwei, go pick up Yu Jing on Friday evening for a couple of days, and have a look at that child. I think that child is my second brother’s.”

”What?”

”You’ll know when you see. He resembles my second brother more than our Jianfeng, and the two kids are somewhat alike.”

Huang Hongwei was truly astonished; this was quite the explosive news.

”Mengjie, isn’t your second sister-in-law’s mom over forty now?”

”Mm.”

The couple stopped talking; this was truly an awkward matter. If they indeed were together, would the deceased father and son have known?

”This Saturday, I’ll take the two little girls to your mom’s house to check on my son.”

”Alright, tell my mom that we are not shirking responsibility; we simply have no choice, depending on my second brother to handle this.”

At Wang Ailing’s son’s full moon celebration, there were only a few tables during the day—just the Wang Family.

Nighttime saw colleagues from both sides, including Qian Jun and Yao Shimin.

”Wang Ailing, has Director Jiang written to you?”

”No, after having the baby, I sent her a letter which she should have received.”

Qian Jun was puzzled; Jiang Xinyu hadn’t called him for a long time, leaving him clueless about her whereabouts. Despite wanting to inform her about Wei Kaiyun’s return, he couldn’t reach her; even written letters went unanswered.

Outsiders believed Qian Jun awaited Jiang Xinyu’s return, expecting the two to become a family, so inquiries about Jiang Xinyu naturally went to Qian Jun; even Wang Ailing thought so.

Kong Mengjie attended with her family of three, enviously admiring such a grand event.

Pan Xiulan’s marriage was set for October 1st, and Song Qingqing’s for the lunar August 15th, which meant an end-of-October wedding.

The two pairs were already engaged, essentially making them couples now; thus, they sat together.

Shen Jian Country’s attention shifted upon hearing Jiang Xinyu mentioned, even missing Pan Xiulan’s call.

”Jian Country, what’s wrong?”

”Oh? What did you say? I was just thinking.”

”Nothing, I just saw you zoning out and called you.”

”Oh, come over for dinner at my place Saturday; my mom asked for you.”

”Alright.” Pan Xiulan was somewhat dissatisfied; since both families met, she hadn’t been happy. Initially promised a house outside, plans abruptly changed.

She had the money herself, with her mother secretly giving her a hundred this time, which sufficed for purchasing a house.

Currently, she’s torn, confiding in Song Qingqing, who is better at managing her life, to suggest moving out.

However, Pan Xiulan, skeptical, ended up writing to Jiang Xinyu, hoping it reached her.

Festivities wrapped up around nine o’clock, with Shen Jian Country and Zhou Zhaodong escorting their wives back to the textile factory.

On the way back, ”Jian Country, have you moved on? Your current demeanor isn’t fair to Secretary Pan. If you haven’t, you shouldn’t proceed with engagement and marriage.”

Shen Jian Country gave a self-deprecating laugh, ”I haven’t moved on, but she clearly cares nothing, rendering my efforts futile.”

”Jian Country, honestly speaking, I think Secretary Pan is prettier and gentler than Director Jiang.” Zhou Zhaodong remarked sincerely.

”I know, but I can’t explain why. Let it be; even if she returns, it’s irrelevant to me.”

”It’s great if you understand. Why did you agree to live with the family then?”
