Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”Captain Cheng, actually, it’s not too bad. Kong Menglin is still young, and even when you grow old, she can take care of you. Also, she can’t have children anymore, and you already have two sons, so what’s not good?”

Cheng Changsheng felt uncomfortable about Kong Menglin not being the first, always feeling like he was being cheated on, and that’s the key point.

But he couldn’t express this feeling to outsiders; keeping it in his heart was indeed very hard to bear.

Wang Dajiang smiled and turned away, leaving.

After work in the evening, Kong Demin and Kong Dehong, the two brothers, arrived at the hospital together, and by this time, Cheng Changsheng was already there.

Tian Shulan had already helped her daughter organize all her things.

Kong Mengjie pushed the door open and saw so many people in the ward.

She brought egg custard and steamed buns with her. This was the dinner she had prepared.

”Sis, go home. Mom will go with you. I’m getting discharged today to go back to my own house.”

”Menglin, don’t be ridiculous. This is not a small matter. You should stay in the hospital for a while longer; this is a lifelong issue.”

”Sis, I’m already like this now. Is there still a need for recovery? Anyway, I can’t have children anymore. Just let it be. I’m going home.”

Kong Mengjie realized that her mother wasn’t objecting, knowing she agreed to let her go.

”Menglin, this is egg custard, have it first. You’ll be busy for a while after getting home, don’t go hungry. Take the buns home to eat.

Mom and I will escort you back home to help you tidy up.”

Kong Menglin shook her head, ”No need. I’ll manage my own life. You don’t have to worry. I’ll eat. You all can leave now.”

”All right, let’s let her decide for herself. You all can go home. I’m not going to Mengjie’s place. Dehong and I will head home; I’ll take the bus back tomorrow morning, you don’t have to mind.”

Saying this, seeing Mom agree, no one else spoke.

Cheng Changsheng remained silent, waiting on the side. After watching Kong Menglin finish eating, he stood up. Kong Mengjie untied her headscarf and helped her sister cover her head.

”Second brother, I’ll repay you for the medical expenses.”

Kong Demin nodded and helped carry the luggage, ”You all go home, and I’ll escort Menglin.”

Tian Shulan followed her younger son home, seeing the house was tidy, she felt relieved and busied herself frying vegetables for her son. With the steamed buns brought over by her eldest daughter, the two of them saved some effort.

Kong Dehong packed his sister’s bedding, clothes, and supplies and went to deliver them to her.

Kong Demin carried the bag, and Cheng Changsheng took Kong Menglin.

The three arrived home; the door was open, meaning the children were back.

Just at the door, ”Second brother, you can go now, I’m fine.”

”Okay, take care of yourself.”

Kong Menglin carried her bag by herself, walking behind Cheng Changsheng. Two kids came out, looking at the woman behind Dad; with her head covered, her appearance wasn’t visible.

Kong Mengjie didn’t say anything, directly went inside, and placed the bag on the kang.

Then she took off the headscarf and went straight to the main room, just staring fixedly at the father and sons.

The two children were startled by Kong Menglin’s facial injuries. It was still Chujiu, the third day since the incident, and her facial wounds looked particularly horrifying, black and blue, not showing any original skin tone.

”You, go inside and rest, I’ll prepare dinner.” Cheng Changsheng genuinely felt helpless. What exactly did she want?

Kong Menglin nodded and went into the room, directly sitting on the kang.

Hearing a knock at the door, shortly after, Kong Dehong came in carrying two big bags, ”These are your stuff. If anything is forgotten, you can come back for it when you’re better.”

”Third brother.”

”Okay, I’m leaving. Take good care of yourself.”

Kong Menglin didn’t tidy up, just took out the bedding and covered herself. Only now did she start the fire; it wouldn’t be comfortable later at night as the kang would be cold.

Cheng Changsheng’s dinner was porridge; he had no choice, today he didn’t have time to go to the canteen to buy food.

”Dinner’s ready.”

”Okay, after dinner, call the two kids over, I want to talk to them.”

”What are you up to?”

”Cheng Changsheng, what do you take me for?” Kong Menglin asked, holding back her anger.

Realizing he might have overreacted, Cheng Changsheng spoke, ”Come in soon.”

Seeing only a bowl of porridge, Kong Menglin felt very aggrieved.

But she still drank it up, without clearing the bowl, just placed it aside, waiting for the father and sons.

A quarter of an hour later, the three came in together.

”You two have seen my condition, haven’t you? You know how these injuries happened, right? I can tell you now, the reason I didn’t have your mom imprisoned is because I considered you. I don’t care what you think, but I’ve done all I could.

Also, as a woman, I can no longer have children, so you no longer need to guard against me; no one will compete with you for inheritance.

Okay, I’ve said everything I wanted to say, I won’t be able to take care of you for the next month, I hope you understand.

You all can rest now. I’ve said what I needed.”

After leaving, Cheng Changsheng returned to his son’s room.

”Dad?”

”Going forward, just do the same as usual, but I hope you all can get along peacefully. If you really don’t like it, keep your distance to avoid conflict. Your mom is fine now, but only on condition that we treat her well. If there’s really a conflict, her family might charge your mom again.”

The two kids nodded, knowing that there couldn’t be conflict; just like Dad said, if you really don’t like it, just act as if she doesn’t exist.

Cheng Changsheng tidied up, told the two kids to wash their feet, and returned to the room himself.

He saw Kong Menglin lying under the covers, eyes closed, but not asleep.

Cheng Changsheng didn’t know what to say, silently lying down as well.

Neither of them slept, but neither spoke.

Kong Menglin felt troubled in her heart, having gone through all this, yet unable to regain this man’s genuine care.

Anyway, she’d truly have to take things one step at a time in the future.

Cheng Changsheng reflected on their past. This woman was very open, and he indeed was captivated by that, but when she pressed too hard, he knew something was wrong. Yet he never expected her to almost ruin him.

Thinking back now, perhaps this is the greatest punishment for her?

A nineteen-year-old girl, having gone through this, despite any wrongdoing, this is how it ends.

Carefully turning his head, Cheng Changsheng looked at the woman lying stiffly beside him, eventually turning back, perhaps leaving things for later, it’s still too early to say.

Who knows what will happen to her in the future? After all, he still has two sons to raise.
