Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”It’s okay, she’s just idle. Also, Jianfeng going to school is a good thing; he should attend school. Look at that girl, Jiang Xinyu, she was determined and knew how to use her work time to attend high school. See? Now she’s a college student.”

At that time, her grades were not as good as Mengjie’s.

Well! That’s fate. Their family is always that kind of people who are not ambitious; who would have thought that she’d turn out well.”

After eating, Kong Mengjie asked Kong Zhongyou to lie down on the bed, ”Dad, take a nap, let Hongwei go. He can drive the cart.”

”Alright, I do need a nap. Jianfeng, want to nap with grandpa?”

”Grandpa, I want to go with my dad to find my second uncle.”

”Go ahead, but it’s too hot outside, take a straw hat.”

Huang Hongwei pushed out the bicycle, and put the child’s seat on the front bar, so that the child could sit very steadily.

Huang Jianfeng looked at the setup and was so happy he was jumping around.

The pair both wore straw hats and pedaled to the Revolutionary Committee.

Kong Demin also knew their father was coming today, but his sister said she was in charge, so he was at ease.

”Second brother, I’m here for the key. Dad brought Dehong and Menglin over.”

”Okay, I’ll go back with you, let’s go.”

”Second uncle.”

”Hey, Jianfeng has grown up a bit more.”

The little guy smiled with pursed lips, he loved when others said he grew up.

When they got home, Kong Zhongyou was already asleep, Kong Dehong was also lying in the room, while Kong Menglin and Kong Mengjie were in another room.

They packed the luggage again onto the cart, and Huang Hongwei drove the cart.

Upon arriving, Kong Menglin looked quite satisfied. This was the house in the county; it was their own home, truly wonderful.

So, in high spirits, she didn’t throw a tantrum and cleaned up the house herself.

”Menglin, the kitchen stuff are all here. Do you think anything is missing?”

”Second brother, do we get food tickets after we start work?”

”Yes.”

”That’s good. I’ve had enough of cornmeal. There should be fine grains here in the county, right?”

”The food tickets you two get will only buy two or three pounds of fine grains; you won’t get much of the good stuff.”

Kong Menglin pouted, ”Second brother, does the cafeteria have fine grains?”

”Yes, twice a week, but you’ll have to hand in your food tickets.”

”Then can we have breakfast and dinner at the cafeteria?”

”Yes, all meals are there. The Women’s Federation shares the same cafeteria as us. Although it’s not as good as the textile factory, it’s already quite nice. We can even have meat once a month.”

”Okay, we’ll hand over the food tickets from my brother and me. Mom brought us some cornmeal and wheat flour, let’s save it for weekends.”

Kong Demin nodded, having arranged for his younger siblings, then everyone returned to Kong Mengjie’s house together.

Kong Zhongyou was very strict at home; the children said they were afraid of him, and even Kong Demin was still scared to act recklessly in front of his father.

Upon returning, they saw their father sitting in the main room smoking, with Kong Mengjie beside him.

”Dad, they’re all back. Let me cut the watermelon.”

It was bought by Huang Hongwei a few days ago. Now that the family was all here, Kong Mengjie brought it out to treat them.

”Mengjie, I’ll get it, you sit down. Second brother, you sit, I’ll get the watermelon.”

Kong Zhongyou smiled; he was pleased that his eldest daughter was in charge at home. People are contradictory like that; if it’s the son’s family, the in-laws might complain. But when it’s the daughter’s home, it’s expected for her to take charge.

”Dad, everything is arranged. I’ll take them to report tomorrow morning.”

”Okay, they are still young, especially Menglin, who tends to be careless. Make sure your mother-in-law takes good care of her and reminds her of things.”

”Yes, don’t worry, dad. We’re all in the same compound, I’ll look after them.”

After eating the watermelon, Kong Zhongyou drove away. Kong Demin also took his younger siblings home.

Kong Mengjie lay on the bed, looking at her son sitting nearby. Nowadays, he doesn’t resemble Zhao Zhongshuo much, but there’s still a hint of him. He really resembles his second uncle a lot now, no wonder even such a cold-hearted person treats his son kindly.

Huang Hongwei went to pick up his daughter from school. He brought a lunchbox to the cafeteria, as right now, Kong Mengjie didn’t want to move at all; she was due in about a month.

She touched her belly, confident this baby would be a boy, planning to give Huang Hongwei a son.

”Mom, are you going to sleep?”

”Mom isn’t sleeping. Jianfeng, did you have a good time at grandma’s house?”

”Yes, I went out to play every day and grandpa gave me delicious food daily.”

”Good, Jianfeng. During your break, play at home with your sister. Your sister Yu Jing will come over too. Once school starts, you should also attend school, alright?”

”Alright, I want to go to school too. Mom, will you make me a backpack?”

”Sure, mom will make you a new backpack.”

In no time, Huang Hongwei returned with their daughter. The family of four sat down for a meal.

”Mengjie, why do you seem so out of energy?”

”I’m just tired, it’s alright. Hongwei, when I’m due, send the kids to my mom’s house so you can relax a bit.”

”Mom, I want to go to grandma’s house.”

”Okay, I’ll take you both there.”

Jiang Xinyu was also on holiday; Master Shang suggested taking the two kids out for a few days, which Jiang Xinyu agreed to, having spent three years here without visiting anywhere else. The excuse was safety, but frankly, she was simply lazy.

”Aunt Bai, want to join us for a trip?”

”Sure, I’ll go out and take a look too. Where are we headed?”

”Let’s check out some iconic places in the city, maybe even head to the mountains.”

”Alright.”

The day before departure, Jiang Xinyu called Wei Kaiyun with her two kids.

”Dad, we’re going to travel,” Shi Jing boasted to her father.

”Where are you headed?”

Shi Jing looked to her mom for help.

From the side, Jiang Xinyu said, ”We’ll tour the city’s notable sites. If Shi Jingfei and Feifei haven’t had enough fun, we’ll explore further. We’re going back next year; we’ve never ventured out, almost wasting four years here.”

”Is Master Shang accompanying you?”

”Yes, he’s coming along. Aunt Bai too.”

With this, Wei Kaiyun felt a bit reassured and began giving lots of advice, but Jiang Xinyu, hearing his repetitive chatter, secretly signaled her daughter, leading Shi Jing to pass the receiver to her sister.

Upon hearing his daughter’s voice, Wei Kaiyun couldn’t keep advising anymore and began charming his girl.

Jiang Feifei managed to delight Wei Kaiyun into peals of laughter. Meanwhile, mother and daughter stood by watching, Jiang Xinyu snorted internally, thinking how he was truly a doting father. Being so captivated by his daughter, it was all too earsplitting.

With reluctance, Wei Kaiyun hung up the phone. He then gazed at pictures of his three beloved women, missing them terribly. Just one more year, three hundred sixty-five days.
