Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”Mom, I don’t want to go. How will I find a husband in the future? They’re all from rural areas. I’d rather find a rural husband now.”

”The ones going to the countryside are all progressive young people. You don’t have to choose someone from the countryside; you can find someone who goes with you. By then, they won’t mind that you don’t have a job and are idle.”

”Really?”

”Are you a fool? Go and inquire when you sign up; surely, many young men are going to the countryside to support local construction.”

”Mom, isn’t it going to be incredibly hard?”

”Is it because I raised you poorly? What’s not hard? Who would want you like this?

Tomorrow I’m going with you to sign up.”

The next morning, while having breakfast, Zhao Zhongshuo heard about his sister going to the countryside, thinking it was a good thing since he wouldn’t have to support her anymore.

”She should’ve gone long ago. People her age already have several children.”

”Hmph, people your age are fathers to several children too.”

Zhao Zhongshuo held back his anger; she was leaving soon, so there was no need to get upset.

”Mom, I know how much money we have at home. You’d better not give her any. If you insist, I won’t give you a penny in the future.”

”Zhongshuo, you?”

”No need for ’you, you.’ I’ve been working for almost eight years. You know how little money you have.”

Having said this, Zhao Zhongshuo left.

Mrs. Zhao leaned over the table, crying bitterly. It felt like karma; she initially thought of giving her daughter some money, but given the situation, she really didn’t dare.

”Hmph, I’m not going.”

Mrs. Zhao lifted her head and looked at her daughter with a face full of bitterness as if this was how she had become. Since her husband died, she had painstakingly raised two children. When did she change like this?

”If you don’t go, your brother will kick you out. Go.”

”Mom, are you just going to let him do this?”

”I’m old; what can I do? If I agreed to him being with Kong Mengjie from the start, it wouldn’t be like this.”

She took her daughter to the street office to sign up. The staff there were very persuasive, praising the mother and daughter for their high awareness, so there wasn’t any unwillingness.

During lunch, he watched Kong Mengjie from a distance. She was his woman, his son’s mother; why couldn’t he be close to her? Zhao Zhongshuo was a bit delirious now, always fantasizing about being Kong Mengjie’s man.

”Mengjie, what’s wrong? Eat a bit more, or you’ll feel uncomfortable in the afternoon.”

”My stomach is upset; it’s nothing, maybe just a little heatstroke.”

”Heatstroke at this time? I’ll get you some herbal medicine to calm your energy.”

”No need, I haven’t had my period this month. If I’m pregnant, I can’t take medicine. Don’t worry; I’m fine.”

Huang Hongwei was thrilled to hear his wife might be pregnant. ”Really? Mengjie, are you serious? Approaching forty, being able to have another child is certainly joyful.”

”Be careful; it’s still uncertain. Calm down.”

”Yes, yes, yes, I understand. What would you like to eat? I’ll go buy it.”

”No need, I don’t want to eat anything right now.” Kong Mengjie shook her head, really feeling unwell.

Zhao Zhongshuo watched Huang Hongwei suddenly burst into smiles; what’s going on? No, I have to ask.

After lunch, Zhao Zhongshuo took advantage of Huang Hongwei going to a meeting to find Kong Mengjie.

”Mengjie, what’s wrong? You didn’t eat at noon.”

”It’s nothing, stop worrying about me. Zhao Zhongshuo, don’t appear in front of me again. I don’t want to see you.” After speaking, Kong Mengjie turned and left, missing Zhao Zhongshuo’s hurt expression.

They were still very much watched by others, so their conversation got spread around.

Returning home at night, Zhao Zhongshuo saw his mother and sister seemed pleased, yet the dinner table was silent.

”Zhongshuo, your sister is leaving on November 15th. There’s still a month. Zhongshuo, you are siblings, break bones still connected by tendons. As her brother, take care of her.”

”Yes, work hard after reaching the countryside.”

Looking at her son being so dismissive, Mrs. Zhao was very hurt. But her son already resented her, she really couldn’t say much more.

Zhao Zhongshuo just couldn’t sleep; around ten o’clock, he wandered out alone, reached Kong Mengjie’s doorstep, seeing it pitch-black inside, feeling extremely troubled. What didn’t he have better compared to that man? At least he was younger.

It must be because he lacked capability. No, he had to strive hard; he had to become a director himself, and then Mengjie would choose him.

By the end of October, Kong Mengjie finally confirmed she was pregnant. Happy, she was going to give birth to Hongwei’s son.

He truly treated her well. Married for years, having two children, realizing the happiest thing for a woman is a man that truly cares, holding her dear; that’s the hallmark of a successful woman.

”Wife, shall I go and pick up Yu Jing tonight?”

”Go ahead, Tiantian and her sisters like playing together.”

Hongwei entered the Kong Family, seeing Meng Xiu Fen packing up things, ”Aunt, what’s this?”

”My brother has passed; I need to go back. Thank you for coming to pick up Yu Jing.”

”Then shall I also take Changjun?”

”No need, Xiao Xiang is at home.” Then Kong Demin appeared.

”Second Brother.”

”Uncle, you’re here. Let’s go; I miss cousin.”

”Okay, let’s go.”

Kong Demin took Meng Xiu Fen to the Meng Family by bike. The journey wasn’t close; it took an hour and a half.

”Deming, since you can’t take leave tomorrow, once I arrive, just head back; I’m not comfortable with only Xiao Xiang looking after the children.

When you go back, seriously, do not have any bad thoughts; Xiao Xiang is meant to be your future wife.”

”Okay.” Demin thought, what’s wrong with the future wife?

Arriving at the Meng Family, Kong Demin offered condolences to the deceased, then had dinner, Meng Xiu Fen asked him to return home.

”When will you come back home?”

”At the earliest, the day after tomorrow. Come pick me up after work.”

”Sure, I got it. If particularly busy, I’ll have someone else come get you.”

”Okay, be careful on the road. Take the flashlight.”

”No need; I can see. You keep it for yourself.”

Meng Xiu Fen felt sweet, watching his tall, strong figure, truly adoring it.

Kong Demin rode back swiftly; there really was nothing critical tomorrow, he simply didn’t want to stay there.

Returning home, he knocked for a long time before the door opened.

”Director Kong, sorry, I fell asleep.”

Kong Demin had particularly good vision. He noticed the girl had worn her shoes in reverse.

”It’s fine.”

”Director Kong, and are you hungry? I’ll cook for you.” Just as spoken, the child started crying.

”Go tend to the child; I don’t need anything from you here.”
