Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

48: Chapter 48: Like Fury 48: Chapter 48: Like Fury The other party had completely fallen for the trap, and Yang Yu, clearly aware of their needs, had thus brought Bai Jin along, deliberately disguised as two down-and-out black workers-turned-adventurers.

With his rich gaming experience, it went without saying that Yang Yu was a natural.

Bai Jin was also deeply invested in the role.

For this day, Yang Yu had taught Bai Jin quite a few secrets of acting, leaving no detail of the undercover technique unexplored.

Under the perfect performance of two acting maestros, Slarate was thoroughly convinced that Yang Yu and Bai Jin were helpless adventurers.

All that was left was for Yang Yu and Bai Jin to pass the test, and they would have completed the first step of their plan.

Of course, no tests could be conducted in the underground referral agency.

The uncle who ran the place opened a secret passage, leading them to an underground facility.

Among the clients were the occasional skeptics of the black workers’ capabilities, and in order to increase transaction volumes, the uncle at the referral agency had built that basement.

Turning on the basement’s magic lamp, the dim light illuminated the space, where the grey floor stretched out to where a wall of haphazardly piled stones obstructed any further path, empty, save for various traces left behind by battles past.

Standing at the center of the arena, Slarate drew his sword, “You two, come at me together.”

[Slarate.

Lianzi LV26 Deputy Director of Human Resources, Silver Orchid Commerce

HP: 512/512 MP: 360/360

Attributes: Strength 141, Defense 75, Intelligence 101, Magic Defense 104, Agility 85, Endurance 62]

His attributes were respectable, slightly inferior to Sekamens.

Once Yang Yu had settled his task of source eradication and evenly distributed the free attribute points he’d received, he estimated his own stats would be around the same.

Smiling confidently, Yang Yu waved his hand, “My sister hasn’t been feeling well lately, and two against one would seem a bit disrespectful to you.

Let me go alone; if I can pass the test, I’d ask you to spare my sister.

Well—if you don’t believe in her strength, after this, I’ll just show you her magic.”

Slarate didn’t know whether Yang Yu was favoring his sister who wasn’t particularly skilled in combat, but it didn’t really matter to him.

He simply needed hired hands with sufficient skill.

“Since you’re so confident, then as you say, just you alone.

If you pass the test, your sister will be exempted.”

“You’re easy to talk to, money indeed makes one generous.

Don’t get me wrong, I mean no disrespect; having money is a good thing,” said Yang Yu as he picked up a long stick and crouched down, “Then I won’t stand on ceremony and will attack first.”

“Come at me.”

Slarate was extremely confident.

As a member of the Lianzi family, he had somewhat earned his position of Deputy Director of Human Resources through his own abilities.

Most who came for the interview would end up outclassed after a few exchanges, and this time would likely be no different.

As Yang Yu approached with the stick raised, Slarate blocked the strike with his sword.

Yang Yu continued to swing the long stick, attacking relentlessly.

The force wasn’t strong; in fact, it was lighter than expected, and the way he wielded the stick lacked any technique—it was not the skill of a competent adventurer at all.

Slarate’s favorable impression of Yang Yu started to wane.

Just then, Yang Yu uttered a sigh, “As I thought, skipping lunch means I can’t exert any strength, I talked too big.

Maybe you should attack instead, sir; dodging is much less trouble than attacking.

You said it yourself, if we can withstand your attack for ten minutes, we’d pass.”

“Let’s see how good you are then,” said Slarate, not wasting any further words as he swung his sword at Yang Yu.

He didn’t use any skills; this was just a simple probe.

If the other couldn’t even dodge or block this attack, he would have to look elsewhere.

Yang Yu didn’t let him down, a quick step back caused his sword to completely miss its mark.

“Sir, I know that was less than half of your full strength.

Since we’re testing, there’s no need to hold back too much.

Life is at stake, so show me your power, and let me know if I am fit for this job.”

He could actually tell that my previous attack was less than half as powerful, hmm, that could be considered adequate.

“Then you’d better be careful.”

Slarate sped up his movements, Yang Yu initially handled it with ease, but as Slarate’s sword swings got faster and faster, he began to appear to struggle.

As if.

All of this was just Yang Yu pretending—he couldn’t afford not to.

When discussing tactics with Tela, Tela had instructed him that the vice director of Human Resources was a particularly petty person.

If he wanted to catch his eye and later remain undercover in his presence at the factory, the best strategy was to act thoroughly mediocre.

“Crack—”

With the sound of weapons colliding echoing in the empty basement, the fight reached its end.

Yang Yu blocked many of Slarate’s attacks with his Long Stick, also deliberately exposing lots of flaws, allowing the sword to cut through his clothes and causing some superficial injuries.

“Time’s up.” Slarate sheathed his sword, looking completely satisfied, “You indeed possess the strength we need.

I believe you will do a great job defending our factory.”

“No, no.

I just didn’t eat enough today, you know, that spendthrift woman spent all our money, so lately I can only eat what barely keeps hunger at bay.” Wiping the sweat from his forehead, Yang Yu’s face was full of flattery, and he didn’t forget to glance at Bai Jin to add to his act, “My sister has always been fond of making potions, and since you run a potion factory, maybe there’s a chance people here could guide her.

You are in the big city, we’re from the small countryside, how about we get rich together?”

Hmph, what a money-grubber.

But I like that.

Slarate instantly became haughty, “That’s not in my control.

If you can establish good relationships with others, I won’t interfere.

But here I must still advise you, do your job, follow orders, and the money will be yours.”

Yang Yu kept up his sycophancy, “Got it, sir.

You’re absolutely right.

So, when do we leave, sir?”

“Look at how anxious you are.

When can you two leave?” Slarate asked in return.

“We can leave anytime; we don’t have much luggage and always carry it with us.”

“Let me inspect it, and if there’s no issue, we can go.”

“Sure, sure, sure.”

Their probing complete, the group returned to the employment agency, and Yang Yu and Bai Jin opened their stored luggage for Slarate to inspect.

Slarate thoroughly checked Yang Yu’s luggage, which seemed to contain nothing more than some worn-out clothes; he appeared to have nothing of value.

As for Bai Jin, he only gave her a cursory look.

Partly because Bai Jin had no charm to speak of, much like in a classroom discussing gentlemanly topics, one only cares about the pretty girls and never pays attention to the plain or obviously unattractive ones, he had no interest in Bai Jin’s personal clothing.

On the other hand, Sitra noticed a large jar of blue liquid in Bai Jin’s bag, which she told him was a magic potion she had concocted, and panting slightly, she asked if he wanted to try it.

When opened to inspect it, the jar’s contents were like slime—sticky and gooey with a strange odor, almost like anger.

To prevent Bai Jin from pulling out other bizarre potions from the bag for him to try, Slarate could only briefly check.

After making sure neither of them carried anything for recording or any mass destruction weapons, Slarate paid the agency fee at the reception, and took the two of them away from the employment agency.
