Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

38: Chapter 38 Special Meeting 38: Chapter 38 Special Meeting The Goblin King incredulously shifted his gaze; at the other end of the cave was a girl with messy hair, accompanied by a pale blue Slime.

They were indeed that man’s companions.

“Did you foresee all of this?”

His vision blurred with blood, and even the azure sky grew hazy in the eyes of the Goblin King.

Before death, what he saw was not the grand achievements crafted by the ancient Goblin kings, nor Yang Yu’s irritating smile, but rather the hint of surprise on the face of today’s Goblin Elite Assassination Squad leader.

What exactly did he want to say to me then?

If I had listened, how different would the outcome be now?

All of this remained unknown.

Such possibilities lingered only in the Goblin King’s final imagination.

“Cough, cough.” After a severe coughing fit, Bai Jin, pale and listless, looked toward He Meng at her side, “Thank you, He Meng…

Miss?

It’s all thanks to you that we could complete the task Yang Yu assigned.”

Yes, the sole reason Bai Jin and others were here was Yang Yu’s instruction.

Yang Yu felt it odd when he heard Bai Jin’s report.

Why are there so many eyes here specifically?

Yang Yu guessed that this was likely to be the escape route for the Goblin King, so he arranged for Bai Jin to return to the cave and wait for an opportunity to eliminate any goblins coming this way after escorting the Silver Wind Team back to town.

After a long wait, Bai Jin finally encountered the goblin Yang Yu had mentioned.

She intended to first use “Healing Forbidden” to block recovery and then strike a finishing blow.

However, after completing the first spell, her illness flared, causing unstoppable coughing and rendering her unable to chant the magic for a finishing strike.

He Meng hadn’t intended to intervene, but she could distinctly sense a formidable presence from that goblin.

Since Bai Jin couldn’t conjure a second magical attack, and to prevent complications, she had no choice but to throw her powerful skill directly at the goblin’s face.

Facing Bai Jin’s gratitude, she turned her body away with aloof pride, pleased inside that someone was genuinely appreciative, far better than a certain ungrateful man.

“Next is…”

Bai Jin cautiously approached the goblin’s corpse.

“Yang Yu also said that this goblin’s body might contain some treasures.

Hehe, how can one say that?

This goblin seemed so strong, it’s surely full of treasures.

Hehe, perhaps it could lead to some bizarre Magic Potion.

After making it, whom should we find to test it?”

Her words sounded eerie, but the expression on Bai Jin’s face wasn’t excitement but fear and disgust, an expression of reluctance but necessity.

Really…

what’s going on with her?

Clearly detesting it, yet she forcibly maintains a casual demeanor…

With no other choice, He Meng shifted her body, wrapping herself around the Goblin King’s corpse.

The Slime took a very long time to digest meat, only finishing near evening, leaving behind only a Ruby Necklace on the ground.

Bai Jin picked up the necklace and repeatedly thanked He Meng.

“Thank you, having the spoils of war will definitely make him happy.”

He Meng just lay quietly to the side, burped, regretting her decision to clean up the goblin’s corpse, “That was really bad, such a taste would make any tasteless ordinary Slime spit it out after one bite.

It’s a wonder I could even finish it.”

…

The matter regarding the subjugation of the Goblin King had finally come to a close.

At night, the adventurers returned to the tavern and started a party, and Yang Yu undoubtedly became the hero of this celebration.

However, he was not immersed in the festive atmosphere of the tavern; the fact that his Level had reached its limit continuously disturbed his mind.

Without mentioning the method the System had provided to break through the Level limit, a special meeting was also taking place while the rescue team and those rescued joyfully partied.

In a dimly lit room, nine individuals wearing brown hoods sat around a large circular table, each with a different numbered pin on their chests.

“As we suspected, the president of the Silver Orchid Commerce indeed has collusion with other countries,” said the investigator, the man in the number two hood, emphatically.

“Not just that,” the man in the number three hood threw a stack of documents on the table, “they are also secretly conducting inhumane research.

Their goal is probably not just to make money.”

“I had this premonition a long time ago.

Unfortunately, with the evidence we have, it isn’t enough to convict them.

If he can prove his innocence, this evidence could be dismissed as being maliciously fabricated by someone trying to frame him, and he could turn the tables on us,” said the man in the number five hood.

“I agree, to prosecute them, we still lack decisive evidence,” spoke the man in the number one hood.

“How are we to obtain this decisive evidence?

Given our positions, we cannot personally send people to investigate.

Should we be exposed, the parliament may not side with us,” said the man in the number four hood.

“There is plenty of decisive evidence.”

An elderly voice echoed in the meeting room, that of the man in the number nine hood.

As he spoke, the room immediately fell silent.

“Your Excellency, do you mean…” the man in the number four hood asked tentatively.

“The decisive evidence is plentiful in their secret research facilities.

Big Pancake Face.

He must have hidden the records of his transactions with other countries in that secret research facility.

We just need to send people there.”

“Your Excellency, as I just mentioned, if we send our people to investigate…”

Before the man in the number four hood could finish reminding him, the man in the number nine hood interrupted him, “Our people won’t suffice, let’s hire adventurers.”

“Adventurers?

Those who only work for money, can we truly rely on them?

What if it implicates us…” The meeting room erupted with intermittent doubts, indicating a distrust of adventurers.

“Going to the underground research facility, I’m fully aware of the potential dangers.

Likewise, I am aware of the risk of the plan being exposed and implicating us,”

said the man in the number nine hood slowly.

“But please consider this—the adventurers only work for money and ask no further questions, which makes the risk of our exposure even lower than you might think.

As long as the task is passed through several hands, the adventurers won’t know who their true employer is.

Moreover, I know someone who works at the adventurer’s guild and happens to lean towards our side.

If anything happens, he can surely cover for us.”

The hooded men looked at each other.

Although they still had some objections, they could not propose an alternative plan, which would purely be nitpicking, and given the urgency, they could only try this somewhat unreliable method.

“Then let’s leave everything in Your Excellency’s hands.”

“Hmm—”

The man in the number nine hood nodded as the others left the room, leaving him hunched over in his seat, sighing to himself.

“When a national crisis looms, there are still those who seek only to protect their own interests, whether they be enemies or allies.

For the sake of the country, what is taking a little risk, but they…”

The man in the number nine hood lowered his hood and furrowed his brow, muttering to himself.

“Perhaps I am no different.”
