High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2949: Chapter 1167: The Teacher’s Test

”Because Small Colma’s understanding of the edge is not comprehensive yet.”

Sir did not ignore the boy’s remark and responded seriously to Zheng Qing’s comment: ”—— The edge is a very vast concept. Generally, anything outside the core and mainstream should be considered as part of the edge. In this view, the edge seems to be limited to the peripheral or critical parts.

If society is viewed as a circle, then this definition is not wrong.

But in actual observation, we find that the social structure is not always symmetrical and beautiful. Many times, it appears in the shape of an olive or a cone. In such a form, each end point belongs to the edge outside the ’mainstream’.

At this point, we can approximate a new conclusion — all parts that do not belong to the ’majority’ are part of the edge — to verify the reliability of this theory, we can attempt to apply other general principles for inference.

For example, the concept of ’Yin and Yang’, the poles of Yin and Yang can transform into each other, in some sense, they have more ’commonality’ than other parts of the whole, and this commonality can be summarized as ’marginality’.

To give a simple example, that Fishman called Iseni living by Lin Zhong Lake is an edge person at First University; similarly, Councilor Su from the Two-dimensional Evolution Laboratory is also an edge person at First University.”

”How is she an edge person?” Zheng Qing was astonished and instinctively retorted.

”Because she is also not a member of the ’majority’.

Sir chuckled lightly: ”——As I just mentioned in the new model, society is shaped like an olive, edges can be at the lower ends, or the upper ends. Both are small clusters ’rejected by the mainstream’... solitary reflections in the cold river, drinking under the moon, the unreachability of the bottom layers and the too cold heights of the peaks, are just two sides of the Yin-Yang poles, both the same loneliness and marginality.”

This outrageous statement left the young wizard dumbfounded.

Upon reflection, it seemed to make some sense.

”——Those in the ’mainstream’ in the middle are quite pitiable.”

The young wizard could only pout, lamenting, and then asked: ”You think the senior’s understanding of the edge is inadequate, but it’s the same for me, isn’t it? I also don’t think Su Shijun is an edge person!”

”But once you become the dean, attracting groups like Councilor Su is possible for the new Edge Academy.”

Sir subtly reminded: ”Miss Colma doesn’t have such charisma... and expanding the audience is very helpful for Edge Academy’s foothold in the Alliance.”

Zheng Qing twitched his lips.

Wanted to say something.

But then felt that it was inappropriate to say anything at that moment.

Finally, he could only resign himself and say: ”——You dust your hands off and leave, leaving me with a bunch of big, troublesome issues. San You Bookstore is being watched by refugees from the high-dimensional world, relevant departments are being watched by outsiders coveting forbidden curses, and now a new Edge Academy has come, with wizards complaining about it lining up from inside the school to outside, and you can’t even count them all on ten fingers! How many nails can my small frame hit... aren’t you overestimating me a bit?”

”That’s why, as I specially emphasized earlier, you’re underestimating yourself a bit.” Sir smiled at him cheerfully, without any intention of retracting his opinion: ”——I cleaned up the causality on me before leaving this world. When I leave, you will naturally inherit much of my legacy, dealing with a few small troubles should not be difficult. If these words haven’t given you enough confidence, then we can do a small test to verify this.”

Sir rambled on with a lot of words.

Zheng Qing only heard the two words ’legacy’.

Perhaps this was the part that most comforted him in this long talk today.

The young wizard, like a buzzing fly, widened his glittering eyes, carefully rubbed his hands and said: ”Legacy? What legacy! The mount of a legendary giant dragon? Or a token to seek help from other ancient beings? Or, a treasure capable of granting immortality, imperishability?”

Sir looked at him speechlessly.

”No tokens, no mounts, and no immortality treasure. What I can leave you with is only this room full of knowledge.” As he spoke, Sir flipped his hand and took out a fruit: ”——And this Xuanhuang Fruit.”

As soon as the fruit appeared, it immediately emitted a peculiar fragrance, permeating the not-so-large bookstore. Many books on the shelves began to silently turn their pages, as if they wanted to savor more of the scent emanating from the fruit.

Zheng Qing once again sensed the peering gaze from behind the bookshelf.

This time, he was not mistaken.

Before he could look up, a ginger shadow flashed and leapt between Sir and Zheng Qing, craning its neck to look at the fist-sized, pale yellow fruit with streaks of blood-like red, resembling a peach.

It was the Yellow Flowered Cat.

It puffed up its cheeks, looking angry.

”Didn’t you say it was already used?” it asked Sir with a disagreeable tone.

”It was indeed used.” Sir glanced at the Flower Cat and airily explained: ”For a wizard like me without any conception of time, whether this fruit was eaten in the past, or will be eaten in the future, makes no substantial difference.”

Truly, without a conception of time.

Zheng Qing silently ridiculed in his heart, recalling the origin of this fruit.

During the Battle of the Black Prison, the Xuanhuang Wood bore a total of seven fruits, one was snatched by the Multi-armed Giant Kotos, another by the Dark Giant Beast Leviathan, one fell into Professor Emma’s hands, and one into Professor Yao’s stomach — the destinations of these few fruits were very clear, without any surprises.

The remaining three.

One first landed in the hands of the otherworldly goddess Eris, who shivered at that time, sensibly tossed it away, and finally, that fruit bounced back into the battlefield, ending up in the hands of an uninvited guest who was a Black Mountain Goat at that time.

Another fruit changed hands numerous times with a more complex experience. It was initially taken by the sea demon Tiber Dragon, then fell into Zheng Qing’s hands. The Wandering Wizard used a discounted gold card given to replace the fruit from Zheng Qing’s hand, only for it to be forcibly taken by the Rat Immortal to revive his daughter, Juice.

Only the last fruit’s whereabouts were unknown.

Unbeknownst to him, Sir had taken it.

”The small test I mentioned is very simple.” Sir handed the fruit to Zheng Qing: ”This fruit is given to you, and you can choose to eat it, give it to someone else, or throw it into a roadside trashcan after stepping out... I will not interfere with any result, but this result will determine whether you want to accept my three little troubles.”
