High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1492: Chapter 236: Reunion

”I’m glad you’ve discovered this little game,” said the Mesnis host, who appeared behind the two young wizards at some unknown point, smiling. ”Many guests have seen the carcass of this cat and touched its fur, but few have witnessed the effect when these two states overlap... The greatness and charm of life are fully demonstrated in such a state.”

While he was speaking, a waiter came to the table with a plate.

On the plate was steaming golden roast meat, surrounded by fresh-tasting onion slices.

The Mesnis host took the plate on behalf of the guests and brought it in front of the two young wizards, making a gesture to invite them to eat.

The witch forked a small piece of roast meat while Xiao Xiao picked up a slice of onion.

Holding the onion, he looked at the cat, then at the bustling crowd around him, and suddenly sighed, ”I’ve heard someone say before that life is like an onion...”

”Spicy yet sweet?” Zheng Qing’s morose voice came through the chest, ”Excuse me, could one of you feed the cat for me? I’d like to see what it looks like... and then eat a slice of onion.”

The witch and the Mesnis host immediately burst into laughter.

Xiao Xiao waved his fork and laughed too, before saying, ”Wait a moment, what I wanted to say was life is like an onion, many things are just boring repetitions... each layer is similar to the one before. In truth, every moment we are feeling the greatness of life, the mystery of magic, but we often overlook them.”

”That’s an interesting perspective,” commented Jiang Yu, forking another piece of meat, ”but I still prefer meat, onions are a bit too potent. Quite impolite.”

”I’ve heard another saying,” the Mesnis host, having put the plate of roast meat back on the table and folding his arms with a slight smile, offered, ”life is like an onion, the more layers you peel, the more tears you shed...”

Before he could finish, a gray figure darted into the tavern through the gap under the spring butterfly door and appeared beside the table. The three young wizards and the Mesnis host all saw it.

Furry Bean friendly wagged its tail at the tavern keeper.

”Wow,” the Mesnis host raised his eyebrows slightly as he looked at the uninvited guest, ”If I’m not mistaken, is this a little gray dog?”

Zheng Qing shifted his gaze, focusing intently on an aged oil painting on the wall of the tavern—depicting a golden gradient kitten sitting in a plate with octopus, beside which was a copper pot bubbling and steaming—he pretended not to notice Furry Bean’s arrival.

Jiang Yu lowered his head to gaze at the roast meat on the plate, holding the fork, pondering seriously which piece to choose.

Xiao Xiao’s face turned a rare shade of red.

”It seems this little dog knows you?” the Mesnis host stepped back, his smile fading, ”You’ve just used the phrase ’No dogs or Zu Ge allowed inside; cats enter free,’ you should remember it.”

”I can explain,” Xiao Xiao cleared his throat, glancing at Furry Bean, ”When a person looks human but does something despicable, we conclude that they are not human; by the same token, when an animal sounds like a cat, eats and acts like a cat, then it is a cat... even if it has the face of a dog.”

Furry Bean seemed to know that Xiao Xiao was talking about it and cooperatively opened its mouth, meowing twice.

The Mesnis host pondered for a few seconds.

”A cat does not wag its tail to please others,” he pointed at Furry Bean’s swaying tail and said.

Xiao Xiao raised the fork in his hand.

”I’ve heard that in some places, if men believe they are women, then legally and in a certain sense, they are considered women.” As he said this, he adjusted his glasses and glanced at the tail behind Zheng Qing before continuing, ”Just as my two companions are not recognized as cats, it should not be identified as a dog.”

Furry Bean meowed loudly twice.

The Mesnis host sized it up seriously and fell silent.

Seizing the opportunity, Zheng Qing finally shifted his gaze from the painting on the wall to the gray-skinned Gouzi crouching at the edge of the table: ”Furry Bean, where did you just go off to?”

Gouzi meowed twice.

Which meant he had just been showing the Elders and the fat man the way; on the way back, he saw two unwelcome guests, so he ran back quickly to report to the young Wizards.

”They’ve entered the city?” Zheng Qing pulled his hand out of the hole on the wooden box, his expression turning a bit more solemn. He had assumed that the substantial entourage would linger at the gates of Wusa for a while, but didn’t expect the two Female Demons to head straight into the city.

Thinking of Zhu Si’s crimson eyes, the Warlock’s mood sank again, the relaxed pleasure from petting the cat gone without a trace.

Furry Bean meowed again twice.

Meaning, not only had the two Female Demons entered the city, but they were also on their way to Mesnis Kitty’s Tavern.

Before the meowing had faded, the butterfly doors in front of the tavern were forcefully pushed open.

Three Zhu Ge in front, two Female Demons following, entered leisurely.

Several Servants from the tavern rushed over.

”Zu Ge are not welcome here!”

One particularly tall waiter shouted, immediately causing a chorus of cheers and agreements to erupt in the hall. It was clear that those little creatures with brown fur were not well-received in this city.

The three Elders of Zu Ge looked back timidly and took a few steps back, seemingly wanting to leave the tavern.

The young Female Demon behind them raised her foot and kicked the Zu Ge closest to her, sending it tumbling several times into the depths of the tavern, knocking over a few chairs in the process.

Curses and the sound of tables and chairs being pushed arose almost simultaneously in the hall. At this time of day, the patrons who were drinking merrily in the tavern usually had fiery tempers; they rolled up their sleeves, revealing their well-built muscles, and some of the more impatient ones even picked up wine bottles or chairs nearby, swinging them around and shouting threats.

The Zu Ge that was kicked immediately lay flat on the floor and played dead.

Its two companions frantically beat their chests and darted under the nearest chairs, clutching the chair legs tightly and refusing to release their grip.

”Zu Ge are not welcome here!” Another more mature Servant gestured to his colleagues to calm the somewhat irritable customers while adopting a more soothing tone towards the two Female Demons: ”If they are your servants, please have them wait outside.”

”It won’t take long.” The young Female Demon waved her hand dismissively with a rather condescending air, quickly scanning the room and nodding in satisfaction upon seeing many black-haired patrons. She took out a crude image from inside her coat: ”We’ve just come to ask if any of you have seen these guys!”
