High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 827: Chapter 175: Approaching the Corner

The sun approaches its zenith in Hengyang, known as the corner of noon.

The corner of noon refers to the time of day just before midday. In the standard time system, this period is between nine and eleven in the morning.

Normally, snakes would choose to hide in the undergrowth at this time to avoid being scorched by the sun.

But Little Dragon did not do that.

Little Dragon was not a dragon, but a snake.

To be precise, it was a nearly two-meter-long cobra as thick as an arm. Compared to its malnourished counterparts outside, Little Dragon had a very cushy life. Every day, it stayed in the Pet Garden and received a well-balanced, nutritious, and ample diet, occasionally getting professional school staff to deworm and exfoliate its skin.

Since the start of the semester, it had already gained quite a bit of weight in just half a year.

This added many new troubles for the snake.

For instance, places where it could once slip through unnoticed were no longer able to conceal its form; the narrow cave paths that school pet snakes used were now closed to it.

More importantly, it used to coil comfortably around its owner’s neck, but ever since an incident a few weekends ago, when its female owner hurt her cervical spine trying to place it on her neck, it no longer had the chance to hang on that fair neck.

This did not fit Little Dragon’s designated persona.

For some unspeakable reasons, it needed to be a good snake, and to be a good snake—it had to make some changes, such as losing weight, losing weight, and losing weight.

So, when its owner Liu Fei Fei visited it at the Pet Garden today, asking if it wanted to accompany her to Pedestrian Street for a walk and to attend the opening ceremony of a shop, the cobra nodded its head without hesitation.

After all, there hadn’t been any new gossip lately, and going out with its owner not only improved their bond but also burned some calories—to what disadvantage?

However, once it actually slithered out of its warm stone den, the cobra regretted its decision.

The icy northern wind swept across its scales, dropping the temperature of its already cold blood by several degrees; the relentless glaring sunlight from the silvery-white sun made its skin painfully irritated.

As a snake facing this attack of both ice and fire, the best choice would be to pass out.

But it couldn’t.

It was not just any snake.

It was a snake with ’dragon’ in its name!

Emboldened by this self-hypnotic thought, the cobra vigorously twisted its body, sliding on the icy stone pavement of Pedestrian Street, utterly disregarding how many pedestrians it disturbed, as it merely panted and followed Liu Fei Fei.

This hardship was temporarily relieved when they reached the middle of Pedestrian Street.

Because both it and Liu Fei Fei, its servant, were stopped by the security officers of Beta Town.

”Pedestrian Street prohibits free activities of creatures with a danger level of three stars and above without restraint,” the young security officer said sternly to the witch standing in front of him, glancing warily at the large cobra on the ground: ”So, if you want to take it out, you need to prepare an appropriate pet basket.”

”Little Dragon isn’t dangerous; he’s very well-behaved,” Liu Fei Fei whispered in defense: ”Moreover, I have read the ’Beta Town Peacekeeping Regulations,’ cobras are rated as one and a half star dangerous creatures... Little Dragon is just a bit larger than usual.”

It seemed as though to confirm its owner’s words, the somewhat drowsy cobra strained to raise its head and flicked its bright red tongue a few times in the wind.

However, its drooping eyelids and tongue flicking appearance looked more threatening no matter how one saw it.

”Get down on the ground! Don’t move! Quick, get down on the ground!” The already nervous officer immediately started jumping, grabbed the Law book whilst shouting, and waved his arms trying to get the cobra that had raised its head to coil back on the ground.

For any snake, this officer’s handling was unwise.

The cobra, previously somewhat limp, suddenly tensed up, its head raising even higher. Even its drooping eyelids under the stimulus of the sunlight lifted, staring with pitch-black pupils, fixated on the Law book in the officer’s hand.

Hearing the rapid hissing coming from the big snake’s mouth and feeling the icy air, the Law book in the officer’s hand finally shook uncontrollably a few times.

A dark red fire line shot out from the pages, circled twice in mid-air, and darted straight toward the cobra.

Liu Fei Fei screamed, frantically trying to fish out her own Law book from her bag, but it was already too late.

Just as she was despairing, a clear spell resonated from beside her:

”Binding Spell!”

Thick dark green vines burst through the air, splitting in two. One turned into a net, heading towards the cobra, effortlessly binding the cobra that had raised its head; the other intertwined into a shield, blocking the path of the fire line.

The dark red fire line violently shot through the air and, unable to avoid it, slammed heavily into the vine shield, burning the dark green shield like a branding iron and leaving several deep scorched marks.

Only then did Liu Fei Fei manage to pull out her own Law book from her handbag.

Seeing the scene before her and smelling the scent of burning gradually spreading through the air, her legs softened, almost causing her to collapse to the ground.

It had been just a moment away; her pet was about to be pierced by that fire line.

Beside her, a pair of arms reached over, steadying the witch.

”Stand firm; it’s all right,” the female Monitor of Astronomy Class 08-1 gently comforted her classmate.

”Snap!”

The Law book in the officer’s hand snapped as it fell to the ground, he stood there somewhat dazed and mumbled, ”I didn’t mean to... It was the Law book that reacted on its own...”

”Beta Town’s Law books only react automatically to demons, do you think any of us are demons?” A short-heightened witch bounced joyfully in front of the officer, trying to make a threatening face, ”Little Dragon belongs to First University as a pet. You almost killed it... it will complain about you!”

The cobra trapped in the vine net hissed twice, struggling to flick its tongue, seemingly agreeing with the Little Witch’s words.

”Shut up!” Jiang Yu kicked the unyielding cobra with the tip of her foot and then glared at the Little Witch running around hectically, ”Meng Meng, come back!”

”Oh, coming!” Li Meng hurried back, tiptoeing to her cousin’s ear and whispering, ”Cuz, look at that officer, doesn’t his uniform seem off...?”

”That’s the uniform for auxiliary officers of the Peace Bureau,” Liu Fei Fei finally recovered and explained, ”Nicolas told me that because of the increased security pressure in Silent Forest recently, most of the Peace Bureau’s forces were dispatched... In recent days, there are only a few auxiliary officers responsible for public safety in town.”

”Tch, so he’s a temp, no wonder his skills are so poor...” Before Li Meng could finish her sentence, her ear was twisted by Jiang Yu, causing her to cry out in pain.
