High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 816: Chapter 164: The ”It’s Actually Good” Warning

From the moment Jiang Yu laid eyes on the Black Cat, she knew it was the Big Black Cat she was looking for.

Although she didn’t understand why the Black Cat’s eyes had turned red, its unique temperament and the silky-smoothness of its fur convinced her of her judgment.

Besides, a cat with snow-white paws wasn’t common. Having been at the school for such a long time, Jiang Yu hadn’t seen another black cat with snow-white paws.

Finally found you, thankfully I didn’t miss you.

As this thought crossed Xiao Bai’s mind, she couldn’t contain her delight and let out several small purrs—since she could easily achieve the minor goal of finding the Black Cat, the task of capturing the culprit shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

With this pleasant mood, Xiao Bai took a few steps back and, after a short run-up, leapt up the big locust tree. Having transformed into a cat multiple times, she had already mastered some of the feline instincts.

Such as night vision, hunting, and climbing trees.

The locust tree, while tall, did not have a high trunk. Instead, it spread its massive canopy with branches that stretched out in all directions. So, even though Xiao Bai was still small, she could climb it with a little run-up.

However, this particular locust tree was quite old, and its rough and fissured bark was far harsher than those of other trees in the forest. Xiao Bai’s tender paw pads felt uncomfortable on the tree bark.

But to catch the Black Cat, she flicked her ears and bore the discomfort.

After climbing over ten meters of rough bark and passing by more than a dozen cats of various sizes, Xiao Bai finally reached the branch where Zheng Qing was lying.

”Move over a bit!”

Xiao Bai commanded fiercely and kicked the Black Cat’s body to the side with a forceful push of her forelimbs. The Black Cat turned its head and glanced in other directions, seemingly in a daze.

Xiao Bai felt dissatisfied and lifted her paw to ’remind’ the Black Cat again with more force.

The Black Cat finally got the hint and reluctantly shuffled to the side, leaving enough space.

Xiao Bai sighed in relief, shook her head, and swung her tail as she squeezed in and lay down lazily.

...

Zheng Qing couldn’t understand the meaning of a cat’s meow.

Although he had been turned into a cat for a long time, he could guess what these furry creatures wanted to say through the different pitches and tones of their meows. Still, this guessing was never as precise as verbal communication.

Of course, given the exceptionally simple social life and thought processes of cats, he didn’t need to carefully interpret the subtle psychological changes in cats. Roughly understanding what they wanted to say was sufficient.

Like now.

This little white cat seemed to want him to scoot over to the side, to leave her some room?

But didn’t she know that this spot was reserved for the boss of the cat gang?

The Black Cat squinted its eyes and tilted its head to look at the intruding Xiao Bai, flicking the tip of its tail and feeling somewhat puzzled. Moreover, Xiao Bai managed to climb all this way, passing so many cats—why did none of them stop her?

Where has their sense of responsibility gone?!

Is this the attitude of subordinates at work?!

The Black Cat couldn’t help but turn back to look at the cats behind and below him.

They were huddled together in groups, grooming each other or dozing off, staring blankly at the tree bark, or in the case of a few lively ones, hopping around in a small space chasing a swaying tree branch. Not one seemed normal.

Zheng Qing couldn’t help slapping his own face.

He should never have harbored any expectations of responsibility from a creature like a cat.

Before his guilt had time to subside, he felt another ’thud’ against his waist. Of course, this ’thud’ was relative. Black Cat could feel that Xiao Bai was using all her strength, eleven points’ worth, but she was too small; even with strength beyond her capabilities, the impact on Black Cat was minimal.

At most, it served as a slight nudge to Black Cat.

Following the direction of Xiao Bai’s kick, Black Cat moved over, making a few inches of space—well, forget it, Big Cat doesn’t stoop to a kitten’s level. The world is vast; what’s a few inches to let her have?

...

Perhaps noticing the movement amongst the branches above.

The ragdoll cat, which had been staying quietly below, also started to get restless. After hesitating for a few seconds, it tentatively climbed a few steps up. But that was it, just a few steps.

When it tried to squeeze a few more inches of space between Black Cat and White Cat, Xiao Bai would very stingily shove it back down without Black Cat needing to react.

Precious resources are valuable everywhere.

The ragdoll cat ’meowed’ a few times, realizing that Black Cat remained indifferent, sitting still, and even tugging at his ear as if trying to plug his ear canal, finally gave up the idea of ascending and obediently returned to its original spot.

...

Xiao Bai was adorned with a few dead branches and withered leaves.

These might have stuck to her while she was walking on the lawn, gotten tangled during her bush traverse, or possibly inherited from other cats during her climb.

In any case, a few unsightly strands of grass clung to the little cat’s pristine fur.

As a cat with a touch of obsessive-compulsive disorder, Zheng Qing couldn’t remain indifferent to those leaves.

Of course, licking fur was out of the question; he didn’t even lick his own fur, let alone that of a mysteriously appearing Xiao Bai. If it weren’t for their previous brief encounters, and her tender age invoking pity in Zheng Qing, her rash ascent to the ’throne’ would have been reason enough for Black Cat to press her into the ground for a good thrashing.

Black Cat had wanted to try hard to ignore it.

But with White Cat squeezing in beside him, those few dry leaves inevitably rubbed against him now and then, causing him to feel uncomfortable all over.

After enduring for one minute, Black Cat finally couldn’t help it, shifted his body outward, raised a paw, and brushed along the fur to knock those few strands of dead grass off Xiao Bai.

Xiao Bai froze for a few seconds, seemingly a bit embarrassed.

But still, she obediently snuggled closer under Black Cat’s paw, lifting her own paw, resting her head on it, squinted her eyes and began to purr contentedly, her little Tail swishing back and forth, in utter comfort.

Black Cat was stunned, his paw still raised halfway, unsure where to place it.

Was she asking him to scratch her itch?!

Did she think she was the queen?!!

After all, who is the true leader of the cat group!

Black Cat shook his ears in annoyance but didn’t retract his paw, instead dutifully laying it on Xiao Bai’s back, stroking in the direction of the fur.

Just consider it taking care of a kitten, then.

He consoled himself that way, just petting a cat. A Wizard can pet cats, so naturally, a cat turned Wizard can also pet cats. Logically, there’s absolutely no problem with that.
