High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 808: Chapter 156 Slip of the Tongue

Just as Xin Fat Man’s attention shifted to boast about his extensive connections outside of school to Li Meng, the young scholarship recipient finally managed to wriggle out from under the fat man’s arm.

Upon hearing the fat man’s bragging, he couldn’t help but sneer, ”Does Greenhill Mansion even need you to buy pumpkins? Their garden is already overrun with them! Even the Flower Sprites and Grass Spirits that sneak into the garden to overwinter aren’t keen on eating them, so why would they need you to find a Druid?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, the scholarship recipient regretted it.

Sure enough, after hearing these words, the other young Wizards in the room, including Li Meng, all turned their heads in unison and looked at him with eerie gazes.

Those stares were enough to make one’s scalp tingle and liver quiver.

”Heh heh...” The Little Witch wore a face that said, ’I knew you were hiding something.’

”Is that so?” Xiao Xiao raised an eyebrow, pulled his notebook out of his pocket once again, took off the cap of his brush, lifted it to his mouth, and leisurely licked it.

”Ahem.” Zhang Ji Xin didn’t say anything, just coughed twice, then crossed his arms, stood there, flexed his brawny biceps, and smiled without a word.

And there was Xin Fat Man, smacking his lips, stretching out his thick arm again and wrapping it around the young scholarship recipient’s neck.

”So, care to explain?” Despite the friendly tone in the fat man’s voice, his manner was somewhat rough. Zheng Qing could even feel his temples throbbing, and for a few moments, it seemed like he could hear his neck bones creaking.

”Explain...explain... What is there to explain?!” Struggling for breath, the young scholarship recipient still clung to a sliver of hope, trying to squeeze out an innocent expression. Meanwhile, his mind raced to find a suitable excuse.

”Let’s hear it then, how do you know what goes on in the gardens of Greenhill Mansion?” Li Meng, impatient as always, immediately followed up with a gossip-craving look, ”Even I’ve never been there! Su Ya has come to visit me several times, suggesting that she’d take me to catch Flower Sprites in the garden, but it always fell through...”

”Greenhill Mansion is so famous, that’s hardly a secret.” Zheng Qing forced a few chuckles, trying to bluff his way through.

But unfortunately, Doctor Xiao stood nearby, and he was on the ’opposite side’ at the moment.

”Many of the family mansions in the Beta Town West District, including Greenhill Mansion, are enveloped in powerful protective magic. Without the owner’s permission, no one would know the specific location of these mansions, let alone whether they have gardens or pumpkin patches.”

The young scholarship recipient’s heart sank.

Xiao Xiao took off his glasses, calmly wiped the lenses, then looked up and glanced at Zheng Qing, ”In other words, you would only know that the pumpkins are overrunning the place if you’ve been to Greenhill Mansion... Now the question is, how do you know the specific location of Greenhill Mansion?”

”Of course, it’s because Su Shijun wrote the address of the mansion on a piece of paper she gave me.” — This was a response that Zheng Qing only dared to think about in his head, and definitely not one he could speak aloud.

Saying it out loud would spell huge trouble — why would Su Shijun give you a note? How do you know Su Shijun? What’s your relationship with her? How many times have you been to Greenhill Mansion? And so on; a slew of questions would inevitably follow.

The young scholarship recipient could fully predict the consequences of speaking the truth.

But not telling the truth was not a good option either.

Something that Zheng Qing had learned well while growing up was that one should never lie when one can tell the truth. Because every lie needs countless other lies to back it up. But a lie will always be a lie; when you can no longer sustain it, that’s when the truth collapses.

Perhaps it was the certain thoughts behind Zheng Qing’s wildly glancing eyes that were seen through.

Doctor Xiao ’kindly’ reminded him with a word, ”If you are about to say that you heard some rumors in the Wandering Bar, I must remind you that Wandering Wizards are very strict about controlling ’certain information’ in the bar. Especially when it involves Big Wizards, or certain large Wizard factions, they are extra cautious.”

”Unfortunately, whether it’s Su Shijun as a Big Wizard or the prominent Qingqiu Su Family, or even the Moon Council, all fit the aforementioned conditions.”

”Not to mention those figures chasing after Su Daxu.”

”As long as Wandering Wizards do not want to have their little shop torn down by a certain brute Wolfman Prince or a Vampire Duke, they certainly won’t allow people to gossip about Su Daxu in the bar.”

”Take a step back, even if there really are messages about Greenhill Mansion being spread in the Wandering Bar, the cost of that information would definitely not be affordable for a cost student like you who’s scraping by on public funds.”

The last sentence seemed somewhat hurtful.

But the young cost student touched his flimsy Grey Cloth Bag and eventually bowed his head dejectedly.

”Moreover, if a message could circulate in the Wandering Bar, a lot of people would surely know about it.” Xin Fat Man released his arm, letting Zheng Qing catch his breath, and added from the sidelines, ”I’ve been to the Wandering Bar more than once when I followed my senior to collect news... There are reporters from the press and media everywhere. The ’Beta Town Post’ even has a permanent spot reserved in the bar. They run faster than anyone when there is news. Even with that, I’ve never heard the message you just mentioned.”

Zheng Qing sighed heavily.

Most of the time, having a friend who knows everything is a fantastic experience—especially in unfamiliar environments surrounded by strange things—but if this ’know-it-all’ is not on your side, then it’s very bad.

Right now, he’d rather be drenched in urine by Poseidon than be surrounded by his buddies here.

”It’s Poseidon!” The young cost student’s brain worked overtime until it nearly smoked, finally coming up with a mostly true, partly false excuse, ”You all know about Su Ya, right! Yes, that’s the Su Ya Li Meng just mentioned!”

”Su Ya really likes Poseidon. She always seeks it out to play, and even takes it to play hide-and-seek at Greenhill Mansion... I always have to go there to bring Poseidon back, right!”

”Why doesn’t Su Ya personally bring Poseidon back to you?” Li Meng immediately questioned.

”Going back and forth every time is very troublesome... That Little fox lady has always been very lazy, you know that,” Zheng Qing immediately came up with a very reasonable explanation.

”So, you’re saying you go to Greenhill Mansion all because of Poseidon?” Xin Fat Man looked at Zheng Qing skeptically.

”I can swear on the Wizard’s Code!” Zheng Qing immediately raised three fingers up to the sky—this gesture was not fraudulent; he really could swear. Because he indeed could go to Greenhill Mansion, thanks to Poseidon.

Yes! That’s exactly how it was!

After several rounds of questioning, the others also began to believe him a bit.

”No justice... It’s simply relying on the dog’s power.” Fat Man muttered with envy, jealousy, and hatred.

”Poseidon is a fox, not a dog,” Zheng Qing let out a huge sigh of relief, his face bloomed with laughter, and he even had the spirit to correct the petty error in Fat Man’s words just now.
