High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 815: Chapter 163 The Origin of the White Cat

Jiang Yu had no plans for a night stroll around the campus tonight.

Especially now that it is the coldest time of the year, and as a transformed kitten, she’s just an ordinary short-haired one without the long fur and thick fat to protect her from the chills. Venturing out in such weather was hardly a wise choice.

But after dinner, when she hurried to the Book Mountain Library, she annoyingly discovered that her usual study spot had been taken by a few unfamiliar faces. As the end of term approached, more and more young wizards began to make their presence known in the library, to the discomfort of those who were regulars there.

Like Jiang Yu, this was the second time her spot had been taken.

If it were a normal day, when she came to the library after dinner, she would be able to find a spacious and comfortable corner to read in. But now, even after searching the library from top to bottom, she couldn’t find another vacant spot.

After leaving the library, Jiang Yu held a one-in-a-million hope as she headed to the teaching building—since it was near the end of term, the school had specially opened a number of classrooms for revision and had extended the opening hours until ten o’clock at night—but predictably, every study room was fully packed with studying students. Among them were veterans with one, two, or even three black stripes on their robes.

The witch had never realized there were so many students at the school.

Of course, not every wizard who occupied a spot was seriously studying. While looking for a seat, the witch discovered more than one couple whispering sweet nothings at their desks and someone reading a storybook about a hero and a dragon next to their revision notes, completely engrossed.

However, no matter how these people were wasting those valuable spots, the witch had no right to ask them to leave.

First come, first served, that’s all there was to it.

With a mixture of melancholy and unwilling grumbling, Jiang Yu returned to her dormitory only to be informed by the empty space that her roommate Li Meng was also not there tonight.

It was then that Jiang Yu remembered Li Meng was going to Greenhill Mansion to help Su Ya pick pumpkins. She had already coordinated with the Head Maid of Greenhill Mansion, Su Man, and confirmed that the two girls were not up to any mischief.

Without the chattering little nuisance, the quiet and empty dormitory delighted the witch. She couldn’t help feeling as though she had found an unexpected haven after a long journey.

So what if there were no seats in the library? So what if there were no seats in the study rooms? She could revise in her dorm room!

However, after opening her textbook and merely working through a few problems, the witch realized she was indeed too naive.

The dormitory was never a good place for studying—not to mention the occasional tromping of footsteps through the corridors and the enticing smell that lingered in the air, a mixture of pillows, blankets, and shower gel, but the stuffed bear that occasionally ambled around at her feet was also a constant distraction.

This feeling intensified when her train of thought on analyzing a Talisman was abruptly interrupted by the stuffed bear tugging at the hem of her pants—it wanted her to help brush its fluffy fur. Damn it, didn’t this bear know that girls had absolutely no resistance to fluffy animals like this?

After spending more than ten minutes playing with the fluffy animal, Jiang Yu finally snapped out of it and realized she was supposed to be revising. For a moment, the witch seriously considered stuffing the stuffed bear named Li Neng into the incinerator to burn to ashes or throwing it into Lin Zhong Lake as spoils for the Fishmen.

She then realized her mistake.

Especially her choice to revise in the dorm was a colossal mistake.

Indeed, if one could study well in a dorm, then what was the purpose of having dedicated study rooms in the school!

Feeling dejected, Jiang Yu looked up at the completely dimmed sky outside the window, listening to the sound of the cold wind clattering against the glass, and an impulsive thought suddenly arose in her heart.

Why not go out for a walk tonight?

Of course, her idea of ’going out for a walk’ wasn’t the same as the other wizards, who would be dressed in robes and holding Law books, strolling along the Lakefront Corridor of Lin Zhong Lake.

Her ’going out for a walk’ meant transforming and chasing after the criminal who had killed the kitten on campus.

Thinking about it, she took action.

Jiang Yu put down her textbooks and review exercises, pulled open the drawer of her desk, and took out a vial of Transformation Potion. Without any mixing, she drank it all in one gulp. Transforming in this way might have a slightly unpleasant taste, but the advantage lies in the quick transformation speed.

She didn’t want to still be lying on the bed, slowly transforming, by the time Li Meng got back from the Greenhill Mansion after finishing her business.

As the moon climbed askew in the branches, the witch had already completed her transformation and appeared on the blue stone slab path outside the dormitory.

Due to the weather, before stepping out, she had hung a Magic Jade Pendant around her neck for cold protection and warmth; it also provided multiple effects such as guarding and attacking. The plush bear, meanwhile, was left in the dormitory, brushing its furry fluff.

It was already approaching eight o’clock in the evening.

Unlike the bustling and lively atmosphere in the summer evenings, the campus in winter was extraordinarily bleak.

Even the few passersby hurried along, shrinking their necks and burying their hands in their pockets. Unless necessary, students rarely wasted magical tools such as Talismans for warmth on weekdays.

The little white cat walked lightly on the grass.

Compared to the blue stone slab path, walking amidst the dry grass felt a bit more comfortable for her paws.

If she was lucky, she might run into the murderer of the kittens tonight; if luck wasn’t on her side, she might still encounter the black cat that had saved her before.

Regardless, even if her luck was worse, it certainly couldn’t be worse than tutoring Li Meng’s homework or staying in the dorm to bathe the plush bear.

With this thought, the little white cat’s steps got even lighter.

This lightness wavered slightly as she came to a fork in the road.

To the left was the blue stone slab path leading to Lin Zhong Lake.

To the right was the road leading to the wood behind the academy’s backyard.

Logically, the little white cat should turn left. Both the clues she had collected before and the highest probability led her to habitually restrict the kittens’ activity range near Lin Zhong Lake.

But perhaps, today she could make a slight change?

The raised paw of the kitten was set down again, and then she lifted another paw, hesitating as she stepped onto the overgrown path.

It wasn’t long before she keenly detected the presence of a large wave of ’congeners’ in the air.

Soon, she arrived underneath the big locust tree.

Then she looked up.

She saw a tree full of cats of various sizes, clustering amongst the branches like ripe fruit.

There was also a black cat with four paws in the snow and red eyes, squinting as it lowered its head to look at her.
