Peaceful Farm Life

Chapter 1198: Chapter 1199: Joining the Army is Not Child’s Play!

”Princess,” An Jing watched as the carriage drew closer to them, and finally, it stopped right in front of their recruitment post. An Jing then whispered to Xiao Changyi, ”She really is here for us, but who knows what for.”

Aside from Princess Su Muxue, General Su Chengyu’s daughter, An Jing had seen many other princesses numerous times, but he was not particularly familiar with any of them.

Before Xiao Changyi could speak, the curtains of the splendid carriage were lifted by a palace maid, and then she stepped out of the carriage.

Immediately after, a eunuch hastily knelt at the side of the carriage.

”Princess,” the palace maid respectfully invited the person inside the carriage to alight.

The person inside only then emerged from the carriage, stepping on the back of the eunuch to dismount.

And at the moment the carriage curtain was pulled back, An Jing and Xiao Changyi saw her — the youngest daughter of Su Haoyu, and the most beloved sister of Su Chengyu — Princess Chengyuan.

Princess Chengyuan, who is now fourteen and known for being unruly and willful, prone to throwing tantrums, was not someone An Jing was fond of. Consequently, he interacted with this princess very infrequently.

As soon as Princess Chengyuan came down from the carriage, she ran towards An Jing and Xiao Changyi with a smile: ”Royal brother, royal sister-in-law!”

Evidently, the princess was also especially lively.

An Jing stood up and asked with a smile, ”What brings you here?” He paused, ”Does your Emperor brother know you’re out?”

”The Emperor brother is aware, indeed. It was he who agreed to let Chengyuan leave the palace to find the royal brother and royal sister-in-law.”

”What do you need from us?”

”I want to join the army as well. Chengyuan also wishes to enlist.”

”Nonsense!” These two words were spoken by Xiao Changyi, his tone cold and terse.

”Royal brother...” Princess Chengyuan’s eyes immediately reddened. She was most afraid of this royal brother named Su Changyi.

Seeing Princess Chengyuan’s eyes welling up with tears from Xiao Changyi’s rebuke and thinking about how she had been cosseted and never experienced hardship, and considering her character, An Jing genuinely felt that Princess Chengyuan was unsuitable for military life.

But then again, An Jing thought about how ’fragile’ the princess’s heart was, and that it wouldn’t be good to refuse too bluntly. So he said, ”Chengyuan, you are born of golden branches and jade leaves; you need not undergo such hardships. Be good, go back to the palace. When you have time, visit your Empress sister-in-law more often, she—”

Before An Jing could finish, Princess Chengyuan pouted and said, ”Chengyuan won’t go back! If royal brother and royal sister-in-law won’t let Chengyuan join the army, then Chengyuan will not return!”

Xiao Changyi, however, did not cater to her, and blurted out, ”Someone, escort the princess back to the palace!”

”Royal brother...” This time, Princess Chengyuan began to cry, but she dared not resist.

An Jing first pulled at Xiao Changyi’s hand, signaling him to give some face, then quickly consoled Princess Chengyuan, ”Chengyuan, your royal brother is just worried that the army life will be too hard on you. He isn’t really angry with you, don’t cry.”

Princess Chengyuan sobbed, ”Royal sister-in-law, Chengyuan wants to join the army...”

”Why would you want that when you have everything you need in the palace?” An Jing was puzzled.

Princess Chengyuan said, ”Chengyuan wants to enlist, to become a Great General, to help Emperor brother.”

Hearing this, An Jing understood why Su Chengyu would consent to her joining the army—it was all for his sake, and he was probably too pleased, allowing her to play around in the military camp for a bit.

Understanding came easy, and An Jing assumed that Su Chengyu did not truly expect his sister to achieve much in the army.

Yet joining the army was no trifle!

The affair of enlistment was a matter of grave seriousness!

Regarding Su Chengyu consenting to Princess Chengyuan’s request to join the army, An Jing was genuinely displeased.

Her husband was right—this was sheer folly!
