Chapter 1161: Chapter 1162: The New Emperor Ascends the Throne

But Ye Zhi was very persistent, even saying, ”Boss, except for being a soldier, I basically can’t do anything else. Being able to find a job as a handyman, I’m already very satisfied.”

An Jing sighed, ”If only women could be soldiers here, then you’d have a place to use your martial skills.”

Ye Zhi laughed, ”With someone as influential as you, maybe one day this could become a reality. Then I could quit this menial job and go back to being a soldier. How does that sound?”

An Jing knew Ye Zhi was joking, but she took it seriously, ”This matter... don’t say it, I could actually give it a try. Once Chengyu ascends the throne, I’ll get my husband to persuade him. Maybe he’ll really agree.”

Ye Zhi had been joking, but upon hearing An Jing say this, her eyes lit up, ”Then Boss, I’ll be waiting for your good news!”

Compared to scraping by with menial jobs, she still preferred life in the military camp.

Even without a military salary, life in the military camp made her feel she wasn’t just idly eating and waiting to die.

”Um,” An Jing said with a smile and a nod, ”If it really happens, I would also like to enter the military camp.”

It was clear that An Jing too dearly missed life in the military camp.

...

In the blink of an eye, it was the sixth day of the tenth month, the day the new Emperor of Xiyun would be enthroned.

That day, Xiao Changyi rose especially early because, as Prince Yi, he was to attend Su Chengyu’s enthronement ceremony.

That day, Xiao Changyi was dressed in Prince’s ceremonial attire, dark colored with embroidered emblems, a Golden Five-Clawed Soaring Dragon stitched onto the back as if the dragon descended from the heavens, formidable and majestic even without anger, both substantial and domineering.

That day, the New Emperor Su Chengyu wore the Nine-Tasseled Crown and imperial robe, which was embroidered with twelve emblems including nine rising dragons; in addition, there was the zhongdan and bixi, all woven with patterns of algawood, fuh patterns, and fus patterns—truly from head to toe, the Emperor’s majestic bearing was fully displayed.

Upon accession, Su Chengyu initiated a three-year tax exemption and pardoned the entire Xiyun Kingdom.

He conferred the title of Retired Emperor on Su Haoyu, Crown Prince on Su Muchen, and Empress on Ning Wenxian.

As for his concubines when he was the Crown Prince, not one was conferred a title.

Despite the civil and military officials finding it strange that Su Chengyu did not confer any titles upon his consorts, no one discussed it during his enthronement ceremony. Even if they wanted to, they could pick another day. Today was for celebration first and foremost.

On the day after Su Chengyu’s enthronement, he ordered major water conservancy and road construction projects throughout the territory of Xiyun Kingdom. His ultimate goal was to achieve a peaceful and prosperous era for Xiyun.

Hearing about Su Chengyu’s initiatives on water conservancy and roadworks, An Jing thought he really had great foresight.

Due to the New Emperor’s enthronement, the ensuing three-day celebration meant Ye Zhi could not start her menial job in the Embroidery Building until three days after Su Chengyu’s accession.

Ye Zhi’s work mainly involved washing clothes for the Embroiderers, cleaning the Embroidery Building, and with so many Embroiderers and the size of the building being considerable, she felt her back bending with exhaustion after just two days.

Inside the Embroidery Building, she was almost always bent over working, no wonder her back was the most tired.

Initially, Gong Juechen did not know Ye Zhi was working in the Embroidery Building, simply because she did not tell him.

Then, seeing that Ye Zhi was not in the mansion during the day and returned at night with a sore back, he asked An Jing where she worked, but since Ye Zhi had requested An Jing not to tell, An Jing didn’t disclose it to him.

In the end, Gong Juechen stopped asking others and decided to follow Ye Zhi directly.

As Gong Juechen peered over the courtyard wall of the Embroidery Building and saw Ye Zhi washing large piles of clothes for the Embroiderers in the courtyard, without a second thought he burst through the main entrance of the Embroidery Building, grabbed Ye Zhi who was in the midst of washing, and began to walk out.
