Chapter 1186: Chapter 1187: Centurion

No one had ever held her hand like that before; Gong Juechen was the first. There was no feeling at all, which was impossible for her not to have.

But thinking that Gong Juechen was merely a face-judger who took an interest in her looks, the warmth that had just risen in Ye Zhi’s face and ears instantly cooled, and her heart’s lake became utterly undisturbed.

...

On the day of the competition, the Imperial Capital posted a royal decree. Soon after, the decree was also posted in various prefectures, counties, and cities of Xiyun.

The content of the royal decree was clear: capable women could join the army. However, their abilities had to be assessed. If they failed to meet the standards, they would be discharged from the military, even if they were initially recruited.

Since Su Chengyu had entrusted the responsibility to An Jing, she planned to train all the recruited female soldiers together. There was a military camp outside the Imperial Capital, and that’s where the new female recruits would train.

Naturally, there would be a separate camp for the women within the military camp, to ensure there was no chaos with the men and to facilitate management.

”Boss, are you serious? Did you really get the Emperor’s permission for me to be your deputy?” Upon knowing that she was going to be the deputy of An Jing, the Minister of War, Ye Zhi jumped up in joy.

An Jing smiled and said: ”There’s no benefit in deceiving you, of course it’s true.”

Ye Zhi was even more delighted: ”I originally planned to be the first one to enlist in the army. Now, I don’t need to enlist anymore; I’m already a soldier.”

An Jing replied: ”Since you have no military merits, Chengyu couldn’t justify giving you a high rank. I only got you a Centurion position to start with. But in reality, you’ll be my deputy, helping me manage the female soldiers.”

”The rank doesn’t matter. What’s important is to be in the military camp. Of course, to train soldiers with you, Boss, haha. We had trained new recruits together back in the day. Those times were just wonderful,” Ye Zhi reminisced with great fondness.

An Jing felt the same nostalgia.

Even after being transported here, the passionate days of the modern era were unforgettable for her; those memories were etched into her heart, vivid as if they had just happened, no matter how many years passed.

”How’s your health now?” After reminiscing, An Jing expressed her concern.

Ye Zhi said: ”That guy Gong Juechen jabbed me with needles twice; now I don’t feel as sore and achy.”

”That’s good to hear,” An Jing was reassured. She paused, then laughed: ”I heard he was at your place last night too.”

”Who knows what got into him—I woke up and found him asleep on the desk in my room. He said he was worried something might happen to me. It’s the mansion, with strict guards everywhere - what could possibly happen to me? Plus, if anything did happen, with his feeble self, not holding me back would already count as a good thing.”

Seeing Ye Zhi’s indignant expression, An Jing couldn’t help but laugh: ”He worries not about someone in your yard causing you harm, but rather about your health, so he could tend to you nearby. Don’t forget, he is a doctor.”

”Enough, Boss. Stop speaking well of him. I’ve learned quite a lot about what kind of person he is during this time,” Ye Zhi said, clearly not wanting to discuss Gong Juechen any further.

An Jing had no intention of matchmaking Ye Zhi with Gong Juechen. Seeing Ye Zhi’s reluctance to talk about him, she changed the topic: ”The day after tomorrow, they will start recruiting female soldiers at the gates of the Imperial Capital. Let’s go take a look.”

”Sure!” Ye Zhi readily agreed with excitement.

”Recruitment will happen in other parts of Xiyun too, and all the female soldiers recruited will come to train at the women’s military camp outside the Imperial Capital. This is just the beginning. There have never been female soldiers before, so I reckon there won’t be many who will respond to the call. Maybe not even a hundred.”
