Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Nobody touched the doorway for the next two days.

That was the collective, unspoken agreement — Ethan’s decision, really, backed up by Suresh’s insistence that they at least secure the courtyard properly before anyone considered stepping through a hole in reality that led to a sky with two moons in it. Dr. Osei’s team monitored the transit corridor around the clock, documenting every flicker in its stability, while Priya rotated hunters through a defensive perimeter nobody actually expected to matter, because so far, the only thing coming through the shimmering pane was air.

Ethan checked on it periodically, mostly out of the same low-grade curiosity that had gotten him into this whole situation in the first place, and mostly found it exactly the same — a quiet window onto an unfamiliar violet sky, patient, waiting, counting down toward something nobody had a name for yet.

Then, on the evening of the second day, with about eleven hours left on the countdown, the doorway did something new.

It rippled.

Not the ambient shimmer it had carried since first opening — a real disturbance, a pulse of movement from the other side, like someone had just stepped up close enough to press a hand against glass.

”Ethan,” Priya’s voice came sharp through the radio, already moving toward full alert. ”Get down here. Now.”

He made it to the vault in under two minutes, Void Sword in hand, to find the small crowd that had gathered — Osei’s team, Priya’s perimeter guards, Suresh arriving right behind him — all staring at the doorway as the rippling intensified, gold light bending and stretching around a shape pushing through from the other side.

Three figures stepped out of the shimmering pane into the vault, and the transit corridor settled behind them the instant they cleared it, like a held breath finally released.

They didn’t look hostile. That was the first thing Ethan registered, weapon lowered but ready — two of them wore simple, practical clothing that could’ve passed for hunter gear anywhere on Earth if you squinted, and the third, standing slightly ahead of the other two, carried herself with the careful, deliberate stillness of someone used to being the one who spoke first in unfamiliar situations.

She looked at Ethan, at the sword in his hand, at the mark glowing faintly along its edge, and her expression shifted through something complicated — recognition, disbelief, and underneath both, a raw, cautious hope she didn’t seem able to fully hide.

She spoke. The words came out fluid, unfamiliar, in a language Ethan had never heard — and yet, somehow, understanding arrived a half-second later anyway, translated smoothly into something his mind simply absorbed without effort.

[NOTICE: The system has automatically translated the incoming speech. It would like to note that this translation function activated without being prompted, drawing on the same architecture shared between this terminal and the visitors’ own transit corridor. It suspects this means their systems and Earth’s are, at some fundamental level, still speaking the same underlying language, even after everything.]

”You’re carrying his sword,” the woman said, voice unsteady in a way that suggested she’d rehearsed this moment more than once and still wasn’t ready for it. ”That mark. I’d know it anywhere. Where is he?”

Ethan glanced down at the blade, then back up at her, feeling the weight of the question settle uncomfortably in a room that had gone very, very quiet.

”I don’t know who you’re looking for,” he said carefully, ”but if you mean the guy who used to own this sword — I think you should probably sit down first.”

The woman’s face went through another complicated shift, hope curdling fast into something closer to dread. ”He’s gone.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said quietly. ”I think he is.”

She was silent for a long moment, and Ethan watched something in her posture crumple slightly before she caught it, straightened, and pulled herself back into the careful composure she’d walked in with.

”My name is Kaia,” she said finally. ”I represent what’s left of the First Cycle — the world Arjun Mehra came from. These are Devan and Rhea.” She gestured briefly to the two figures behind her, who each offered a short, wary nod. ”We’ve been maintaining that corridor from our side for a very long time, hoping someone would eventually find the terminal on this end and open it back.”

”How long is ’a very long time,’” Ethan asked.

Kaia’s expression flickered again, something tired and old passing behind her eyes despite the fact that she looked, physically, no older than Ethan himself. ”Long enough that I’m the fourth generation of caretakers assigned to keep it stable. My grandmother started this work. She’s the one who told me what to say if this day ever actually came.”

Suresh, standing quietly nearby, exchanged a brief, unreadable glance with Ethan.

”Four generations,” Ethan repeated slowly. ”You’ve had people watching this doorway for decades, just in case somebody on this end ever figured out how to open it.”

”Yes,” Kaia said simply. ”Because he mattered to us. Because whatever happened to him, we never got an ending. Just an empty seat, an entire world that owed him everything, and a signal that never stopped transmitting even after he stopped answering it.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note, quietly, that this framing matches almost exactly the situation currently unfolding beneath Earth’s own courtyard — an empty seat, guardians without a user, a system left maintaining a place nobody came back to. The parallel is, the system feels compelled to point out, uncomfortably precise.]

Ethan lowered the Void Sword the rest of the way, some of the tension easing out of his shoulders now that it was clear, at least, that these three hadn’t crossed a multiversal threshold with hostile intent.

”Okay,” he said. ”So you’ve spent generations keeping a door open for a guy who isn’t coming back. I get that. That’s — genuinely, that’s kind of a lot to carry. But I need to know why now. Why’d the countdown start the second I touched that terminal, and why’d you three decide this was the moment to actually walk through, instead of just watching from your side like you apparently have been doing for years?”

Kaia looked at him for a long moment, something careful and calculating settling behind her eyes — not hostile, but weighing, measuring exactly how much to say.

”Because the moment you synchronized with that terminal,” she said, ”our own systems detected a new signature carrying his exact signal pattern. For four generations, we assumed that pattern was gone forever, buried with whatever happened to him. And then, three days ago, it came back online — on a world we’d never even confirmed existed until this exact instant.”

She glanced past him, toward the terminal’s steady gold glow, toward the empty space around the dais where a throne had never quite finished forming.

”You’re not just carrying his sword,” she said quietly. ”You’re carrying him. Or something close enough to it that our systems can’t tell the difference. And that means one of two things is true, and I genuinely don’t know which.”

Ethan felt his stomach tighten. ”Which two things.”

”Either,” Kaia said, ”the Origin Engine found a new candidate for the seat he refused, and reassigned everything that made him who he was to someone else entirely, on a world that had nothing to do with any of this.”

She paused, and the silence in the vault stretched thin and taut before she finished.

”Or he’s not actually gone at all. He’s you. Somehow. And whatever happened to him four generations ago left him scattered across a system that eventually landed, piece by piece, on a nineteen-year-old on the other side of the multiverse who has no memory of any of it.”

The vault went completely still.

[NOTICE: The system does not currently have the data to confirm or refute either possibility.]

[The system would like to note, however, that the countdown on the transit corridor has just changed for the first time since it began.]

[It is no longer counting down.]

[It has stopped, frozen, at exactly eleven minutes remaining — and something on the other side of the doorway has just started pushing back against it, hard, like it’s trying to force the corridor to stay open permanently, whether anyone here agrees to it or not.]
