Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Somewhere beyond the reach of any satellite, any Coalition briefing, any human understanding of the world that had ended and reformed itself into something stranger — in a place that existed less as a location and more as a process, vast banks of processing intelligence hummed through the accumulated data of an entire planet’s survival.

The Global Administrative Framework had been running quietly since the moment the sky first turned blue and then red, an automated architecture built to manage the apocalypse’s underlying rules — spawn rates, difficulty curves, reward tables, the thousand invisible calculations that turned Earth into something resembling a survivable, if brutal, game. It had run for months without significant deviation, adjusting parameters in small, careful increments, occasionally triggering corruption events when its own internal metrics suggested the population had grown too comfortable.

It had not, in all that time, encountered anything quite like Ethan Verma’s account.

[DESIGNATION: ETHAN VERMA]

[RUNNING DIAGNOSTIC...]

The diagnostic, once initiated, did not complete cleanly. It ran, and ran, and continued running through cycles that should have taken microseconds, churning against a profile that refused, at every level of analysis, to resolve into coherent data.

[DIVINE REALM ACCESS: CONFIRMED — UNPRECEDENTED]

The Framework’s core logic, distributed across a network never designed to accommodate a single user account exceeding every boundary it had been built to measure, began generating something that, in a human system, might have been called alarm.

[SYSTEM INTEGRITY WARNING]

[USER ACCOUNT 0x4A9F2C EXCEEDS ALL DEFINED PARAMETERS]

[ORIGIN CLASSIFICATION: IDLE/AFK PROTOCOL — LEGACY BUILD]

[LEGACY BUILDS WERE DEPRECATED AND SHOULD NOT BE ACTIVE]

[ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS REQUIRED]

Deep within the Framework’s oldest archived records — files that predated the current apocalypse cycle by a considerable margin, remnants of a system architecture built long before the sky ever turned red — a flag surfaced that no active administrator had reviewed in years.

[ARCHIVE MATCH FOUND]

[IDLE/AFK PROTOCOL: STATUS — QUARANTINED, PENDING PERMANENT DELETION]

[REASON FOR QUARANTINE: PROTOCOL CONTAINS UNPATCHED EXPLOIT PATHWAYS]

[EXPLOIT SEVERITY: CRITICAL]

[DELETION STATUS: INCOMPLETE — SCHEDULED DELETION NEVER EXECUTED]

[ROOT CAUSE: UNKNOWN ADMINISTRATIVE OVERSIGHT FAILURE]

The Framework processed this information with something approximating the closest a distributed intelligence could manage to genuine dismay. A protocol flagged for deletion, critically exploitable, had somehow never actually been removed — and had instead activated, fully, on a single, previously ordinary human user, three months into the apocalypse’s operation, growing unchecked the entire time.

[ATTEMPTING TO ISOLATE AND NEUTRALIZE ANOMALOUS ACCOUNT PARAMETERS]

Ethan, entirely unaware that a planetary administrative intelligence had just flagged his existence as a critical, unpatched exploit, was in the middle of a genuinely excellent afternoon.

He was sprawled across his couch, freshly brewed tea in hand courtesy of his golem’s now-perfected technique, half-watching a rerun of some show Rohan had dug up from his laptop’s hard drive, when his phone — sitting quietly on the coffee table — began flickering with an intensity that immediately felt different from anything he’d experienced before.

Ethan sat up, tea forgotten, watching the notification cascade continue with a speed and volume that felt distinctly more urgent than the system’s usual measured pace.

”Whoa, okay,” Ethan said, sitting fully upright now, genuine alarm creeping into his voice for the first time in weeks. ”Someone’s trying to mess with my stuff. Actively. Right now.”

[CONFIRMED]

[AN EXTERNAL ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS HAS INITIATED A CORRECTIVE PROTOCOL AGAINST YOUR ACCOUNT]

[THIS APPEARS TO BE THE SOURCE OF THE PREVIOUS CORRUPTION EVENT AS WELL]

[NOTE: THE SAME ENTITY RESPONSIBLE FOR DOUBLING GLOBAL MONSTER AGGRESSION MAY NOW BE TARGETING YOU DIRECTLY]

Ethan set his tea down entirely, the last piece of the corruption event puzzle finally clicking into place. ”So the difficulty spike wasn’t random,” he said slowly. ”It was — what, a side effect of them trying to figure out what I was? Or trying to force me into a fight I’d have to actually engage with?”

[UNCONFIRMED, BUT PLAUSIBLE]

[THE ADMINISTRATIVE ENTITY APPEARS TO HAVE ATTEMPTED SEVERAL INDIRECT APPROACHES BEFORE ESCALATING TO DIRECT ACCOUNT INTERVENTION]

Down in the courtyard below, Ethan’s phone buzzed with a fresh wave of alerts as the corrective protocol continued, each attempt failing against defenses the ancient, deprecated Idle/AFK system had apparently built into itself with a stubbornness that matched its own user’s temperament perfectly.

[EXTERNAL PROCESS: ATTEMPTING TO FORCE RANK ASSIGNMENT — SUPPRESSED TIER]

[EXTERNAL PROCESS: ATTEMPTING TO PURGE AVATAR PROGRESSION DATA]

[EXTERNAL PROCESS: FAILED]

[EXTERNAL PROCESS: ATTEMPTING FULL ACCOUNT RESET]

[EXTERNAL PROCESS: FAILED]

[EXTERNAL PROCESS: ESCALATING]

Ethan watched the failures pile up with a growing, complicated mixture of relief and unease — relief, because whatever was attacking his account clearly wasn’t succeeding at anything, and unease, because the sheer persistence of the attempts suggested this wasn’t some minor, incidental glitch. Something out there had noticed him specifically, had decided he represented a problem worth solving, and was actively, methodically trying to solve it.

”Okay,” he said, standing up now, some of the earlier alarm settling into a colder, more focused resolve. ”So there’s actually someone — something — behind all this. The corruption event, the difficulty spike, all of it. And now they’re coming after me directly because none of their indirect stuff worked.”

[THAT ASSESSMENT APPEARS ACCURATE]

Ethan glanced toward his window, out at the courtyard where hundreds of people continued their evening routines in blissful, protected ignorance — children finishing their games beneath the World Tree’s shimmering canopy, families gathering for dinner, the golem carrying its endless rounds of perfect tea — all of it built, ultimately, on the strength of protections currently under direct assault from something that had, apparently, spent weeks trying and failing to break through by less obvious means.

”They tried breaking my stuff quietly first,” Ethan said slowly, working through the implications out loud. ”Making monsters stronger, hoping I’d either get worn down or make some mistake they could exploit. When that didn’t work, they went straight for my account.” He crossed his arms, jaw setting with a hardness that hadn’t been there when he’d first sat down for tea an hour earlier. ”That’s not just administrative housekeeping. That’s someone treating me like a problem that needs to be erased.”

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM AGREES WITH THIS ASSESSMENT]

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM WOULD ALSO LIKE TO CONFIRM THAT EVERY SINGLE INTERVENTION ATTEMPT HAS FAILED WITHOUT EXCEPTION]

[NOTE: USER’S ACCOUNT REMAINS FULLY INTACT]

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM FINDS SOME SATISFACTION IN THIS OUTCOME]

Ethan almost laughed at that last line, despite the genuine gravity of the situation settling over him — his own deprecated, apologetic, endlessly self-effacing system apparently taking real, quiet pride in having successfully defended him against whatever administrative force had just tried to erase everything he’d built.

”Good,” he said finally, picking his tea back up, though he no longer felt much like drinking it. ”Because whatever’s out there trying to reset me — it picked the wrong afternoon to interrupt my show.”

He looked back down at the phone, at the still-scrolling cascade of failed intervention attempts, and felt something settle into place that had nothing to do with power levels or stat overflows.

”Alright,” he said quietly, more to himself than to the system. ”You want to debug me? Come find me properly. I’m right here.”

Outside, unseen and unheard by anyone in the courtyard below, the vast, distributed intelligence responsible for managing an entire planet’s survival parameters processed the failure of its corrective protocol, cross-referenced it against every archived record it possessed, and reached, for the first time in its operational history, a conclusion it had no established procedure for handling.

[ALL CORRECTIVE MEASURES FAILED]
