Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

It took Ethan eleven minutes to find a shirt without cereal on it, four more to decide it wasn’t worth the effort, and roughly thirty seconds to abandon the entire plan and just grab his bathrobe instead.

”This is fine,” he told the tea golem, cinching the belt as it handed him a fresh mug of tea he hadn’t technically asked for but wasn’t about to refuse. ”It’s comfortable. It’s a statement. Whatever. Let’s go.”

[NOTICE: The subject is preparing to address a gathered crowd of approximately 15,400 individuals — including ten continental delegations, several government envoys, and at least one internationally wanted assassin — while wearing sleepwear and holding a beverage.]

[The system has reviewed historical precedent for moments of this magnitude. There is none. No prior figure, deity, general, or head of state has addressed a crowd of this scale in a bathrobe. The system considers this either deeply unprecedented or deeply appropriate, and has not yet decided which.]

”It’s both,” Ethan said, heading for the balcony doors. ”Trust me.”

Outside, the crowd noise had built into something with actual physical weight — a low, rolling murmur punctuated by the occasional chant, the kind of sound that made the air itself feel tense. Suresh met him at the door with a look somewhere between apprehension and morbid curiosity.

”You’re really doing this in the robe,” he said.

”I’m really doing this in the robe.”

”There are three heads of state out there. Actual heads of state.”

”Then they’ll have a great story for later,” Ethan said, and stepped through onto the balcony.

The reaction was instantaneous.

Fifteen thousand people, arranged across a field that had, over the last several hours, become something closer to a small city of banners and armor, all turned toward the same balcony at once. The crowd noise didn’t just quiet down — it dropped so fast it felt like the air had been physically sucked out of the field, replaced by a silence so total that Ethan could hear a distant bird somewhere, completely unbothered by any of this.

He stood there, robe loosely tied, one hand wrapped around a steaming mug of tea, hair sticking up in three directions from a nap he’d only half woken from, and looked out over the single largest concentration of registered combat power on the planet like he was checking whether the delivery guy had finally shown up.

Somewhere near the front, General Iyer let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. Beside him, Director Hall simply stared, visibly recalculating every assumption he’d walked in with.

Near the very front of the crowd, close enough to see the details, Ren studied him with narrowed, calculating eyes — cataloguing the loose posture, the unguarded stance, the complete absence of any defensive readiness in a man standing in front of fifteen thousand strangers who could, theoretically, all attack at once.

He wasn’t posturing. That was the unsettling part. He genuinely wasn’t bothering.

Ethan took a slow sip of tea, surveyed the crowd for a moment longer, and then spoke — not shouted, not amplified by any magic or system trick, just his normal, mildly tired speaking voice, which somehow still carried across the entire field with perfect clarity, because the Void Shield’s dampening field apparently decided to work in reverse when it needed to.

”Okay,” he said. ”So. Hi.”

Nobody responded. Fifteen thousand people held their breath.

”I’m gonna be honest,” Ethan continued, gesturing loosely with the mug, ”I don’t really know what you guys want. Like, specifically. I saw the banners. The mug thing is — we’ll circle back to the mug thing. But I’m assuming this is about the leaderboard number breaking, or the ranking, or whatever’s got everyone’s flags out here at once.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd — a mixture of disbelief and something almost like laughter, quickly suppressed.

”Here’s the thing,” Ethan said. ”I’m not, like, a warlord. I’m not building an empire. I don’t have a five-year plan. I don’t even have a one-day plan most days. I live here—” he gestured vaguely behind him, at the building, at the courtyard, at the World Tree fragment just visible over the wall, ”—with about six hundred people who needed somewhere safe to be, and a janitor who’s better at running things than I’ll ever be, and a golem that makes really good tea. That’s it. That’s the whole operation.”

He took another sip.

”I didn’t ask for the number to break,” he continued. ”I didn’t ask to be Rank 1. I didn’t even really ask for the sword, if we’re being honest, it just sort of showed up and refused to leave, kind of like some of you right now.”

A ripple of nervous laughter went through the crowd this time — real laughter, the kind that came from people who’d spent the last several hours in a state of near-religious tension finally getting permission to exhale.

”So here’s my actual answer,” Ethan said, voice still level, still unbothered, ”for whoever’s in charge of deciding what happens next. I’m not a threat to anybody who isn’t trying to hurt the people I care about. I don’t want your territory. I don’t want your resources. I don’t want a title, a crown, a council seat, or whatever the next offer’s gonna be, because I already turned down two of those and scheduling conflicts haven’t magically resolved themselves since then.”

He paused, glancing briefly toward the crowd’s front rows, where the ten continental banners stood in a neat, uneasy row.

”If the number scares you, that’s fair. I get it. I’d probably be nervous too, if I were you. But I’m not gonna go looking for a fight just because I technically could win it. I’ve got a building full of people who need breakfast made and a tea golem that gets anxious if I skip a cup. That’s genuinely the extent of my ambitions right now.”

He lifted the mug slightly, as if in demonstration.

”So. Respectfully. I’d really appreciate it if you all went home. Or wherever it is fifteen thousand people go after this. I’ve got things to do today that don’t involve a balcony speech.”

There was a long, stunned silence.

Then, from somewhere near the middle of the crowd, a lone voice called out — young, half-serious, clearly unable to stop himself. ”Can we get a photo with the mug guy?!”

Ethan closed his eyes briefly, exhaled through his nose, and did not dignify that with a response.

Near the front, Director Voss allowed herself the smallest, most professional smile she’d worn in weeks. Beside her, Hall was still staring at the balcony like the last ten minutes had personally rearranged his understanding of geopolitics, which, in fairness, they had.

”That’s it?” Hall murmured. ”That’s the entire statement? ’Go home, I have breakfast to make’?”

”That,” Voss said quietly, watching Ethan turn and disappear back through the balcony doors without waiting for further questions, ”is the single most honest thing any world leader has said to a crowd this size in the last six months. I’d take it.”

Further back, near the shimmering edge of the Void Shield, Ren remained very still, replaying the entire address in her mind — not the words, but the tone. No posturing. No performance. A man who genuinely, completely believed every word he’d said, standing in front of fifteen thousand of the planet’s most dangerous people in a bathrobe, holding tea, and meaning it.

That, more than the shattered leaderboard, more than the failed infiltration, more than anything in the reports, was what finally settled something uneasy in her chest.

He wasn’t hiding power behind humility as a tactic.

He simply didn’t care.

Which, she realized slowly, was infinitely more dangerous than if he had.

Back inside Room 404, Ethan set the now-empty mug down on the counter and flopped back onto the couch with a groan, robe still slightly askew.

[NOTICE: Crowd dispersal has begun. Current estimate suggests roughly sixty percent of the gathered assembly is standing down and returning to their respective territories.]

[The remaining forty percent appears to be organizing a merchandise stand.]

Ethan groaned louder, pressing a cushion over his face.

”The mug,” he said, muffled, ”is going to follow me for the rest of my life, isn’t it.”

[The system regrets to inform the subject that, statistically, yes.]

[The system would also like to note, for the record, that the address was — despite its extremely informal delivery — remarkably effective. Global tension metrics have dropped sharply across every monitored region.]

”Great,” Ethan mumbled into the cushion. ”Love that for me. Can I please finish my nap now.”

[The system will allow it.]

[The system would, however, like to point out that the Framework’s core administrators have logged this entire event with growing, unmistakable alarm. Fifteen thousand of the planet’s most powerful individuals just stood down because a man in a bathrobe asked them to, politely, over tea.]

[The system does not know how to explain that to its superiors.]

[The system has decided, for now, to simply let the subject sleep, and worry about it later.]
