Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The sealed door turned out to be less dramatic than the guardians, which, after the morning Ethan had, came as something of a relief.

It didn’t require a key, or a sword, or a recognition ritual of any kind. It simply opened on its own the moment Ethan approached, the same way the terminal chamber’s passage had unlocked days earlier — a quiet, unceremonious groan of ancient stone sliding aside, like the whole buried city had simply been waiting for him to get around to it.

Beyond it was a home.

Small, by the standards of the vast plaza outside, but unmistakably lived-in once — a single room carved from the same dark stone as everything else down here, but softened somehow, worn smooth in places by years of ordinary use rather than centuries of dust. A low sleeping platform sat against one wall, blankets long since crumbled to nothing but their shape still faintly visible in the stone’s wear pattern. A shelf held a scattering of small carved objects — cups, bowls, something that might once have been a teapot. And carved directly into the wall opposite the doorway, in the same uneven, personal handwriting style Ethan recognized from the terminal’s archive, was a list.

Suresh found it before Ethan did, having climbed down the rope ladder a full ten minutes behind everyone else, moving carefully around Dr. Osei’s team as they documented the kneeling guardians with the reverent focus of people who’d just found the archaeological equivalent of a lottery ticket.

”Ethan,” Suresh called from the doorway, flashlight raised toward the carved wall. ”You need to see this.”

Ethan wandered over, still carrying the ancient skillet because nobody had officially told him to put it down yet, and stopped in the doorway beside Suresh, reading the carved list by flashlight.

HOUSE RULES, it read, in letters that looked like they’d been carved slowly, deliberately, by someone with more patience for stonework than most people had for anything.

1. Nobody wakes me before noon unless something is actually on fire.

2. If it’s on fire, put it out first. Then wake me.

3. Anyone asking me to lead anything gets told no. Politely. But no.

4. The market stays open even if I don’t feel like running it that day. Ask Priya. Wait — ask whoever’s handling logistics. Not me.

5. Snacks are for everyone. Don’t hoard the good ones.

6. If someone needs help and I’m asleep, wake me for that specifically. Rule one doesn’t apply to actual emergencies involving people I care about.

7. I am not the king of anything. Stop asking.

Ethan read it twice, then a third time, the ancient skillet suddenly feeling considerably heavier in his hand than it had a few minutes ago.

”That’s not just similar,” he said quietly. ”That’s basically my house rules. Word for word, almost. Rule three is literally what I told Anika.”

Suresh didn’t say anything for a moment, just kept the flashlight steady on the wall, letting Ethan take it in at his own pace.

”Rule four,” Suresh said finally, ”mentions someone handling logistics. Not him.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said. ”I noticed that too.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to confirm what both the subject and Suresh have already independently concluded. Cross-referencing the terminal’s earlier archive entry — the one naming a friend identified only as ”S.” who handled ”the actual running of things” — against this carved rule set produces a pattern the system considers statistically significant beyond coincidence.]

Suresh let out a slow breath, lowering the flashlight slightly, staring at the carved wall with an expression Ethan hadn’t seen on him before — something quieter, more unsettled than his usual steady calm.

”There was someone like me,” he said. ”Whoever this Arjun was, he had someone running things for him too. Handling the people. The logistics. The parts he couldn’t be bothered with.”

”Looks that way,” Ethan said.

”Do you think—” Suresh stopped, started again. ”Do you think whoever that was ended up the same place he did? Wherever that is?”

Ethan didn’t have an answer for that, and for once, neither did the system.

[The system has no data on the individual referenced as ”S.” beyond the single archive fragment already recovered. There is no name, no fate recorded, no further mention anywhere in the terminal’s logs. Whoever they were, their story simply stops the same way Arjun’s does — mid-sentence, without resolution.]

Suresh was quiet for a long moment, running his flashlight slowly over the rest of the small room — the worn sleeping platform, the shelf of carved cups, the quiet, ordinary details of a life that had clearly mattered to someone, once, regardless of how much cosmic weight had eventually gotten piled on top of it.

”It’s strange,” he said finally. ”All this power. All these guardians kneeling upstairs. An entire buried city built around one guy who apparently just wanted to sleep in and not be bothered. And at the end of it, this is what’s left. A list of house rules and a room barely bigger than my old apartment.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said quietly, looking at the carved wall one more time, at rule seven in particular — I am not the king of anything. Stop asking — carved with what felt, even now, like genuine, weary conviction. ”That’s kind of the whole point, though, isn’t it. He didn’t build any of this because he wanted a throne. The guardians, the city, all of it — that’s stuff other people built up around him. He just wanted to be left alone with people he actually cared about.”

”Sounds familiar,” Suresh said, with the faintest, knowing edge to his voice.

Ethan huffed out something that wasn’t quite a laugh. ”Yeah. I noticed that too.”

He stepped further into the small room, running his free hand along the edge of the shelf, over the small carved cups that had clearly, once, held something warm on a regular basis. There was no golem down here, no obvious equivalent to the tea rituals Ethan had built his own life around — but the shape of the habit was unmistakable, worn into the stone the same patient way rule one had been carved above a bed nobody had slept in for longer than anyone could measure.

[NOTICE: The system has just picked up one final detail from this room — faint, but present, embedded in the shelf itself rather than the archive. A recording. Audio only, badly degraded, but the system believes it can recover enough to play back a fragment.]

Ethan glanced up. ”Play it.”

The room filled, briefly, with a voice — worn thin by however many centuries had passed, but unmistakably human, unmistakably tired in the exact particular way Ethan recognized from his own reflection some mornings.

”...if you’re hearing this, I guess that means someone finally found the place. Took you long enough.”

A pause. Static.

”Look — whatever they told you upstairs, whatever the guardians said, whatever that terminal’s been feeding you about thrones and inheritance — you don’t owe this place anything. You don’t owe me anything. I built rules, not a legacy. There’s a difference, and I really hope whoever you are gets to keep it that way.”

Another pause, longer this time, the recording nearly lost to static before it cleared just enough for one final line.

”Take care of the people who actually showed up for you. Everything else can wait. It waited for me long enough.”

The recording cut out.

Ethan stood in the small, quiet room for a long moment afterward, the ancient skillet still hanging forgotten in one hand, and felt something settle in his chest that wasn’t quite grief, wasn’t quite recognition, but sat uncomfortably close to both.

”He knew,” Ethan said quietly. ”He knew someone would eventually end up standing right here, listening to that.”

”Sounds like it,” Suresh said.

[NOTICE: The system would like to note one final detail before they leave this room — something it withheld until now, uncertain of the right moment to raise it.]

[The recording’s timestamp does not match the terminal’s final log entry. It is dated significantly later — meaning Arjun Mehra recorded this message after he had already, by every other piece of evidence, logged out permanently.]

[Which raises an uncomfortable question the system cannot currently answer: if he was already gone by then, who came back down here long enough to leave it?]
