Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Ethan’s grand plan to hunt down whoever was messing with the global difficulty curve had, over the past several days, quietly evaporated into the same comfortable inertia that swallowed most of his ambitious declarations. He’d checked the system menu a few more times, found nothing new, and eventually let the search slide back into ”something I’ll get to eventually” territory, comforted by the knowledge that his avatar kept grinding regardless and that the sanctuary, at least, remained untouched by whatever was happening to the rest of the world.

He was sorting through his void inventory on a lazy afternoon, still riding the pleasant afterglow of Suresh’s dragon-blocking heroics two days earlier, when he stumbled across an item he genuinely didn’t remember acquiring.

[ITEM: DORMANT SEED — UNKNOWN ORIGIN]

[RARITY: MYTHIC]

[ORIGIN: FORGOTTEN ATHENAEUM, HIDDEN COMPARTMENT]

[STATUS: DORMANT — REQUIRES ACTIVATION]

”Huh,” Ethan said, turning the entry over in his mind, no memory whatsoever of picking this up. He must have absorbed it accidentally during the great library sweep weeks ago, buried among the four thousand books and never properly examined since. He tapped the item, curious, and a small, unassuming description unfolded beneath it.

[DESCRIPTION: A SEED OF UNKNOWN AGE, CARRYING A FAINT BUT UNMISTAKABLE ECHO OF PRIMORDIAL LIFE ENERGY]

[POTENTIAL EFFECT: UNKNOWN — GROWTH OUTCOME CANNOT BE PREDICTED]

[NOTE: THIS ITEM PREDATES THE CURRENT SYSTEM FRAMEWORK, SIMILAR TO THE SHARD OF THE FIRST VOID]

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM RECOMMENDS PLANTING IN A STABLE, UNDISTURBED LOCATION]

Ethan glanced around his apartment, at the general chaos of his living space — laundry in one corner, the Void Sword propped by the door, an empty ceramic pot sitting on the windowsill that had once held some houseplant he’d killed through neglect months before the apocalypse even started.

”Stable and undisturbed,” he repeated, eyeing the pot. ”Yeah, that tracks. Nobody’s touched that thing in months.”

He retrieved a bag of soil — one of the more mundane items Suresh had insisted on stockpiling in the courtyard’s small garden project, something Ethan had never personally cared about until this exact moment — filled the pot, and planted the seed with roughly the same level of ceremony he’d apply to any other minor household task.

”There,” he said, patting the soil down. ”Grow, I guess.”

Nothing happened immediately, which Ethan took as reasonable confirmation that seeds, mythic or otherwise, still operated on some kind of normal timeline, and he went back to his couch, mostly forgetting about it within the hour.

He noticed the change the following morning, and it was impossible to miss.

The pot on his windowsill, which had held nothing but plain soil the night before, now cradled a small, delicate sapling — pale silver bark, leaves that shimmered faintly with an internal light like captured starlight, standing maybe eight inches tall and already, somehow, radiating a presence that felt entirely disproportionate to its size.

[GROWTH EVENT DETECTED]

[SEED IDENTIFIED: FRAGMENT OF THE WORLD TREE]

[STATUS: SAPLING STAGE]

[EFFECT: PASSIVE ATMOSPHERIC PURIFICATION]

[RANGE: EXPANDING WITH GROWTH]

[NOTE: THE WORLD TREE IS A MYTHOLOGICAL ENTITY PREDATING RECORDED HISTORY]

[NOTE: NO LIVING SPECIMEN HAS BEEN CONFIRMED TO EXIST IN OVER A MILLENNIUM]

[NOTE: USER GREW ONE OVERNIGHT IN A WINDOWSILL POT]

”World Tree,” Ethan repeated slowly, leaning close to examine the sapling’s shimmering leaves. ”Like, capital letters, ancient legend, World Tree?”

[CONFIRMED]

He reached out, hesitant for the first time in a while, and touched one of the small silver leaves. It felt warm, alive in a way that went beyond ordinary plant matter, and the moment his fingers made contact, a faint pulse of golden light rippled outward from the sapling’s base, spreading across the room in a slow, gentle wave that left the air feeling — cleaner, somehow, crisper, like a window had opened somewhere despite his own windows remaining firmly shut.

[ATMOSPHERIC PURIFICATION: ACTIVE]

[CURRENT RANGE: 12 METERS]

[EFFECT: NEUTRALIZES AIRBORNE CONTAMINANTS, CORRUPTED MANA RESIDUE, AND TOXIC SPORE CLUSTERS]

[NOTE: RANGE WILL EXPAND AS THE TREE MATURES]

Ethan sat with that information for a long moment, thinking back to the past few weeks of complaints he’d heard from residents in the courtyard below — the persistent, faint haze that had settled over the district since the corruption event, ash and spore residue drifting in from destabilized gates, making more than a few of the older sanctuary residents cough through the night. He’d noticed it himself, vaguely, without connecting it to anything actionable.

”Okay,” he said, standing up with sudden purpose. ”This can’t stay in my window. This needs to be somewhere it can actually help people.”

He carried the pot down to the courtyard that afternoon, sapling cradled carefully in both hands, and found a spot near the center of the open space — close enough to the old rusted swing set that Ethan had grown fond of over the weeks, symbolic in a way he didn’t examine too closely, and replanted it directly into the courtyard’s soil with Suresh’s help.

”Beta,” Suresh said, watching the small silver sapling settle into its new home, ”what exactly is this?”

”World Tree,” Ethan said. ”Apparently. Found the seed in my inventory, planted it in a pot, and it just — did this overnight.”

Suresh crouched beside it, studying the shimmering leaves with the same quiet reverence he’d shown every impossible thing Ethan had handed him over the past month. ”It feels different from the other things you’ve given us. Warmer. Alive.”

”It purifies the air,” Ethan said. ”According to the system, anyway. Figured it’d help with the haze everyone’s been dealing with since the corruption thing started.”

Within an hour of the replanting, the change became noticeable even to residents who had no idea what had caused it. The faint, persistent haze that had settled over the sanctuary’s courtyard for days seemed to thin, then clear entirely, replaced by an air that felt crisper, cleaner, carrying a faint, sweet scent that reminded more than one elderly resident of gardens they hadn’t seen since long before the apocalypse began.

Children who’d been coughing through the nights slept easier. An old woman who’d been struggling with shortness of breath for a week found herself, by evening, breathing freely for the first time since the corruption event began. Word spread through the courtyard in the particular, grateful hush that seemed to accompany every quiet miracle Ethan produced without quite meaning to.

By nightfall, the sapling had grown another six inches, its silver bark thickening slightly, leaves multiplying in slow, visible increments that suggested it had no intention of stopping anytime soon.

[WORLD TREE FRAGMENT: GROWTH ONGOING]

[ESTIMATED MATURE RANGE: 2 KILOMETERS]

[ESTIMATED TIME TO MATURITY: UNKNOWN — GROWTH RATE ACCELERATING]

Ethan sat on the courtyard steps that evening, watching the small tree catch the last light of dusk, its leaves shimmering like scattered stars against the darkening sky, and felt a small, quiet satisfaction settle over him — different from the loud, dramatic triumphs of trenches and Calamity kills, something gentler, more permanent.

”You know,” he said to Suresh, who’d settled onto the step beside him, ”I keep accidentally solving problems I didn’t even know we had.”

”That has become something of a pattern, beta,” Suresh agreed, smiling faintly, watching a group of children chase each other around the tree’s base, laughing in air that finally, truly, felt clean. ”I have stopped being surprised by it.”

Ethan nodded, watching the sapling sway gently in a breeze that, for the first time in days, carried nothing but the simple, uncomplicated scent of something growing.
