Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Three days after the sky healed itself, the world finally exhaled.

It wasn’t a dramatic recovery — there was no parade, no ceremony, no grand address from any surviving head of state, because most of them were still privately too rattled to organize one. It was quieter than that. Rebuilding crews went back to clearing rubble. Guilds that had spent months as rivals kept, awkwardly but sincerely, some of the cooperation they’d found during the Continental Unification. Somewhere, a news anchor did a segment on the fact that global monster spawn rates had dropped by ninety-four percent overnight, and nobody could explain why, because the explanation was currently asleep on a couch parked eight hundred meters above a courtyard in an unnamed Indian district.

Ethan came down eventually. Mostly because the couch got cold.

”You’ve been up there eleven hours,” Suresh said, watching Ethan climb down out of the Void Step’s shimmer, blanket still wrapped around his shoulders, pillow tucked under one arm like a security blanket he had no intention of surrendering.

”Felt like four,” Ethan said, yawning. ”Best sleep I’ve had since the apocalypse started, honestly. No interruptions. No droids. No gates. Ten out of ten, would end the world again just for the nap.”

”Please don’t.”

”Kidding. Mostly.”

Suresh handed him a tablet without further comment, which by now had become his preferred method of delivering bad news gently — let the screen do the talking, stand nearby in case Ethan needed a reaction absorbed by someone calmer.

Ethan scrolled. The headlines were, unsurprisingly, still about him.

GLOBAL THREAT LEVEL DOWNGRADED TO ”STABLE” FOR FIRST TIME SINCE APOCALYPSE ONSET.

THE UNDEFINED, THE CITADEL, AND THE END OF THE FRAMEWORK’S WAR: WHAT WE KNOW.

MERCHANDISE SALES OF ”THE MUG” REACH RECORD HIGH FOLLOWING VOID PULSE EVENT.

Ethan stopped on that last one, stared at it for a long moment, and handed the tablet back without a word.

”I’m not reading the mug article,” he said. ”I’ve made my peace with the mug’s existence. I don’t need updates on its career.”

”It’s doing very well,” Suresh said, deadpan. ”There’s a limited edition now. Glow-in-the-dark.”

”Suresh.”

”I’m just saying, if you ever wanted a cut of the royalties—”

”Suresh.”

Suresh, for the first time in the entire story, actually smiled — a real one, not the tired, patient half-smile he usually managed, but something looser, something that had clearly been waiting behind months of exhaustion for permission to show up.

”It’s over,” he said, quieter now, looking past Ethan toward the courtyard, where the World Tree fragment stood taller than it had before the battle, its leaves catching morning light that no longer carried the faint sickly tint of a broken sky. ”Actually over. I keep waiting for the next notification. The next gate. The next thing.”

”Yeah.” Ethan looked out at it too — at refugees moving freely through the courtyard for the first time without glancing nervously upward, at Priya organizing a supply run that was, for once, about groceries and not emergency evacuation logistics, at the tea golem parked contentedly by the World Tree’s base, brewing what appeared to be a truly enormous batch of tea for no particular reason other than the sheer, uncomplicated joy of having nothing else urgent to do. ”Yeah. Me too, honestly.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to confirm, for both of you, that there is currently no active threat anywhere on the planet requiring intervention.]

[The system would further like to note that this is the first time it has ever been able to say that sentence.]

[The system finds it, quite genuinely, the best sentence it has ever generated.]

The Administrators didn’t return. Not directly, anyway — but every so often, small quiet upgrades filtered through the system’s now-expanded root access, changes Ethan hadn’t asked for but appreciated regardless. The building’s plumbing fixed itself overnight. The Void Shield’s dampening field got noticeably better at blocking noise, as though somewhere in the Framework’s remaining architecture, someone had taken Ethan’s complaints about sleep interruptions seriously and quietly patched them out of existence.

Life, against every possible expectation, started to look almost normal.

Ethan spent his days doing exactly what he’d always wanted to do before any of this started: napping when he felt like it, eating whatever Meenakshi’s rebuilt bakery had fresh that morning, occasionally wandering the Citadel to make sure nobody needed anything, and otherwise doing his absolute best to be left alone. The world, having learned its lesson rather thoroughly, mostly obliged. Guild leaders who wanted an audience learned to schedule around his afternoons. Governments that wanted alliances learned that ”no” from Ethan wasn’t an opening negotiation position — it was the final answer, every time, and the fastest way to get on his bad side was to keep asking after he’d already said it.

Suresh ran the Citadel. Priya ran logistics. The tea golem ran, more or less, the emotional support department for six hundred people slowly rebuilding their lives, and did it with more warmth than anyone had a right to expect from a machine built to brew tea.

And Ethan slept. A lot. Genuinely, uninterrupted, deserved sleep, the kind he’d spent this entire apocalypse fighting increasingly absurd battles just to earn a fraction of.

It was, by any reasonable measure, exactly the ending he’d wanted.

Three weeks later, on an unremarkable evening with nothing planned beyond dinner and an early bedtime, Ethan was lying on his own actual bed — reclaimed from its brief career as sky furniture — half-asleep, one arm hanging off the edge, when the system spoke up in a tone it hadn’t used in a while.

[NOTICE: The subject may want to remain conscious for the next several seconds.]

Ethan cracked one eye open. ”That’s never good.”

[The system agrees that it is, historically, rarely good. However, this particular notice is different in nature from prior escalations.]

[The system has detected an anomaly. Not a threat. Not a gate. Not an enforcement droid. Something deeper — buried in the Framework’s core architecture, in a layer the Administrators never fully disclosed, even during the full transfer of authority.]

Ethan sat up slowly, some old instinct from months of chaos refusing to let this pass without at least sitting up properly.

”Define anomaly.”

[The system has been attempting to define it for the last several minutes. It has not succeeded. What it can confirm is this: somewhere beneath the layer the Administrators handed over, there exists a structure that predates this entire apocalypse simulation. Older than the Framework itself. Older, potentially, than the concept of ”Idle/AFK Protocol” that was assigned to you.]

[It has just activated.]

Ethan felt the faint hum of the Void Sword, resting against the wall across the room, stir slightly — the same restless, humming awareness it had shown right before the Arbiter first descended.

”Activated how,” he said slowly. ”Activated like — another final boss? Because I genuinely just got my nap situation sorted out.”

[The system does not believe this is another final boss.]

[The system believes — and it would like to state clearly that this is a first-time assessment, made with limited data — that this is something closer to a beginning.]

Faint text began resolving in the air above Ethan’s bed, not the harsh administrative font of the Framework’s old threat notices, but something older, quieter, carrying the same tone as that mysterious voice from the Firmament Reach months ago — you have returned further than expected — except deeper now, more resolved, like a door that had been ajar this entire story finally deciding to open the rest of the way.

[UNKNOWN ARCHITECTURE DETECTED.]

[DESIGNATION: ??? ]

[STATUS: AWAKENING.]

[A SECOND SYSTEM HAS BEGUN CALIBRATION.]

Ethan stared at the words for a long moment, then let out a long, weary, deeply familiar sigh — the exact same one that had once sent a Rank 2 warrior flying three kilometers into a grain silo.

”Of course,” he muttered, flopping back down onto his pillow anyway, because whatever this was, it clearly wasn’t urgent enough to interrupt tonight’s sleep schedule. ”Of course there’s a second one. Of course I don’t get to just be done.”

[The system would like to reassure the subject that, whatever this new architecture turns out to be, he has, empirically, already beaten worse.]

”Yeah, well.” Ethan pulled the blanket up, eyes already drifting shut, the faint glow of the unknown notification fading gently into the dark of the room. ”Ask me again in the morning. I’ve earned a full night first. Whatever wakes up next can wait its turn.”

The Void Sword’s quiet hum settled, patient, into the dark beside him.

Outside, the district slept peacefully under a healed sky, unaware that somewhere far beneath the world they thought they understood, something ancient had just opened one eye — and found, waiting for it, the exact same lazy, unimpressed, thoroughly unbothered god who had already broken one apocalypse without ever really trying.
