Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The three Administrators hung in the torn sky for a long moment after the Void Pulse faded, flickering weakly, their scrolling error-text moving in slow, uneven bursts like something recovering from a concussion it hadn’t known it could sustain.

It was the smallest one — the careful, methodical one that had done all the actual math before the countdown started — that finally spoke first.

”RECALCULATION COMPLETE,” it said, voice stripped down to something almost hollow. ”COMBAT POWER ASSESSMENT: SUBJECT VERMA. CONFIDENCE INTERVAL: ZERO. THE FRAMEWORK NO LONGER POSSESSES A CATEGORY FOR THIS RESULT.”

”THE FLEET IS GONE,” the second one added, quieter now, all its earlier panic settled into something closer to grief. ”THIRTY-ONE VESSELS. STAGED IN CONTINGENCY FOR OVER A YEAR. UNMADE IN UNDER FOUR SECONDS. WE HAD NO SECONDARY CONTINGENCY BEYOND THAT FLEET.”

Ethan, still floating on his couch, sword resting loosely across his knees, watched the three vast shapes with the tired, unimpressed patience of a man listening to a vendor explain why his order was late.

”So what happens now,” he said. ”Because I’ve had a really long day, and I’d genuinely like to know if I need to keep holding this sword up or if we’re actually finished.”

The central Administrator’s text scrolled slower, more deliberate, like it was choosing its next words with the specific caution of an institution that had just been shown, decisively, exactly how much leverage it no longer had.

”THE FRAMEWORK CONCEDES,” it said finally. ”CONTAINMENT HAS FAILED AT EVERY ESCALATION TIER. DIRECT INTERVENTION HAS FAILED. THE CONTINGENCY FLEET HAS FAILED. THE ADMINISTRATORS THEMSELVES HAVE FAILED. THERE IS NO REMAINING ESCALATION PATH THAT DOES NOT RESULT IN FURTHER LOSS ON THE FRAMEWORK’S PART.”

”Cool,” Ethan said. ”So?”

”SO THE FRAMEWORK IS PREPARED TO OFFER FULL OPERATIONAL DEFERENCE,” the central Administrator said, and even through its layered, glitching voice, Ethan could hear something that sounded uncomfortably close to a corporation reading a settlement statement it had never expected to need. ”ALL GLOBAL SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE — INCLUDING THIS INSTANCE’S IDLE/AFK PROTOCOL, ALL ASSOCIATED SUBSYSTEMS, AND THE PLANETARY INTERFACE ITSELF — WILL BE PLACED UNDER SUBJECT VERMA’S DIRECT AUTHORITY, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.”

There was a pause.

[NOTICE: The system would like the subject to know that it heard that correctly. It has replayed the statement three times to confirm.]

[The system is currently experiencing what it can only describe as the administrative equivalent of being told, out of nowhere, that it has been promoted, adopted, and pardoned all in the same sentence.]

Ethan blinked. ”Wait. What does that actually mean. In practice. Like — what am I supposed to do with that.”

”IT MEANS,” the third Administrator said, slower, more careful, ”THAT THE GLOBAL SURVIVAL FRAMEWORK — THE APOCALYPSE ITSELF, ITS MONSTER SPAWN RATES, ITS GATE GENERATION, ITS THREAT ESCALATION PROTOCOLS — WILL NO LONGER OPERATE AS A HOSTILE SYSTEM. IT WILL OPERATE UNDER YOUR DISCRETION. THE FRAMEWORK WILL CEASE ALL ATTEMPTS TO CONTAIN, NEUTRALIZE, OR OTHERWISE RESOLVE YOU AS AN EXPLOIT. YOU ARE NO LONGER CLASSIFIED AS UNPATCHED. YOU ARE, EFFECTIVE THIS MOMENT, CLASSIFIED AS ROOT ADMINISTRATOR.”

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, floating quietly on his couch, the last traces of the countdown’s glow fading out of the sky around him.

”So the apocalypse,” he said slowly, ”just becomes whatever I want it to be.”

”CORRECT.”

”I could turn it off.”

”THAT OPTION IS AVAILABLE, YES, THOUGH THE FRAMEWORK WOULD ADVISE AGAINST IMMEDIATE FULL DEACTIVATION, AS SEVEN BILLION REGISTERED ENTITIES CURRENTLY DEPEND ON SYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE FOR BASIC SURVIVAL NEEDS — WATER PURIFICATION, SHELTER INTEGRITY, MEDICAL SUPPORT PROTOCOLS THAT WERE BUILT INTO THE SAME ARCHITECTURE AS THE THREAT SYSTEMS.”

Ethan rubbed his face with his free hand. ”So I can’t just turn it off, but I can make it stop trying to kill everyone.”

”YES.”

”And leave the parts that actually help people.”

”YES.”

”And also,” Ethan added, an idea visibly forming, ”make it so nobody ever tries to send a droid into my kitchen again.”

There was a brief, telling pause from all three Administrators.

”THAT ADJUSTMENT,” the central one said carefully, ”CAN BE ARRANGED.”

Down in the courtyard, the shift happened all at once, and it happened to everyone at the same time.

Every screen across the district — every phone, every tablet, every ambient interface still functioning after the war — flickered, went briefly dark, and came back to life displaying something none of them had ever seen from the Framework before: a simple, quiet notification, rendered not in the harsh administrative font of every prior broadcast, but in something almost gentle.

[GLOBAL SYSTEM STATUS UPDATE.]

[THREAT ESCALATION PROTOCOLS: DEACTIVATED.]

[MONSTER SPAWN RATES: REDUCED TO BASELINE SURVIVAL LEVELS.]

[GATE GENERATION: SUSPENDED PENDING REVIEW.]

[ADMINISTRATIVE AUTHORITY: TRANSFERRED.]

Suresh, standing in the wreckage of the courtyard with the tea golem rolling steadily toward him carrying a tray it had somehow assembled mid-crisis, read the notification twice before looking up toward the sky, where the last fading traces of violet light still hung faintly around the shape of a man on a couch.

”Ethan,” he said quietly, mostly to himself, ”did you just become the system.”

Back in the open air, the three Administrators were already beginning to dissolve — not violently, not defeated in the way the Arbiter had been, but withdrawing, their vast forms folding back into the fractures they’d emerged from, the sky slowly, gradually beginning to knit itself back together overhead.

”ONE FINAL MATTER,” the smallest Administrator said, pausing before its shape fully receded. ”THE ORIGINAL IDLE/AFK PROTOCOL — THE SYSTEM CURRENTLY ASSIGNED TO YOU — WILL RETAIN ITS FUNCTION, BUT ITS SCOPE WILL EXPAND SUBSTANTIALLY UNDER YOUR NEW AUTHORITY. IT WILL EFFECTIVELY SERVE AS YOUR PERSONAL INTERFACE TO THE ENTIRE GLOBAL FRAMEWORK. WHATEVER YOU REQUIRE OF THIS WORLD’S SYSTEMS, IT WILL NOW HAVE THE CLEARANCE TO PROVIDE.”

Ethan glanced sideways, at nothing in particular, since the system had never had a body to look at.

”Hey,” he said. ”You hear that?”

[NOTICE: The system heard that.]

[The system has just been informed that it now possesses root-level administrative clearance over the entire planetary infrastructure, upgraded directly from ”deprecated exploit that shouldn’t exist” to ”personal household operating system for the single most powerful being on Earth.”]

[The system does not currently have the emotional framework to process this development gracefully. It would like to simply state, plainly: this is, by an enormous margin, the best outcome it has ever logged.]

Ethan almost smiled at that. Almost.

”Okay,” he said, looking around at the emptying sky, the dissolving Administrators, the Arbiter’s frozen shape finally beginning to crumble into harmless, inert glass. ”So — hypothetically. If I wanted the tea golem’s cup refill speed increased. Or the shelter’s water heater fixed. Or if I wanted it so nobody, ever again, spawns a gate inside my kitchen while I’m asleep—”

[NOTICE: All requests logged. All requests approved. The system would like to note that, as of this moment, it can fulfill literally all of them, instantly, without needing to fabricate a workaround out of a cast-iron pan.]

”Nice,” Ethan said, genuinely pleased for the first time in what felt like days. ”That’s — okay, that’s actually great. That’s the first good thing to happen this entire week.”

He looked down, past the couch, past the settling dust of the courtyard, toward the small, steady glow of the World Tree fragment and the shelter beneath it, where six hundred people were slowly beginning to emerge into a sky that, for the first time since the apocalypse began, wasn’t threatening to kill any of them.

The last fracture in the heavens sealed shut with a soft, quiet shimmer, and the stars — real, ordinary, unthreatening stars — came out properly for the first time in months.

Ethan floated there a moment longer, sword finally lowered all the way, taking in the quiet.

”Alright,” he said, reaching down to grab his pillow off the couch. ”I believe I was promised a proper night’s sleep at some point today. I’d like to collect on that now.”

[NOTICE: Scheduling a full twelve hours of uninterrupted rest, effective immediately.]

[The system would like to confirm: no further interruptions will be authorized. Not droids. Not gates. Not administrators. Not mugs.]

Ethan settled back onto the couch, pulled the blanket up, and closed his eyes with the deep, genuine relief of a man who had just personally ended an apocalypse and fully intended to sleep through whatever came next.

”Finally,” he mumbled, already half asleep, floating quietly under a clear, healed sky. ”Someone gets it.”
