Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Kael Draven did not leave.

He’d sheathed the Ashcrown Blade, he’d acknowledged the truth of what had just happened, and by every reasonable measure the duel was over. But he stood there in the darkening field for a long moment after, jaw working silently, something clearly unresolved still sitting behind his eyes.

Ethan, halfway back to the gate, noticed the lack of footsteps behind him and stopped with a sigh that suggested he already knew what was coming.

”You’re still here,” he said, not turning around.

”I have one more request,” Kael said.

”Of course you do.”

”You blocked me,” Kael said. ”You didn’t fight back. I need to know what it looks like when you actually try. Not out of pride — I’ve made my peace with losing. I need to know, for the sake of every hunter still out there who thinks they can measure themselves against you, what the actual gap is. Not the gap between your defense and my attack. The gap between your effort and mine.”

Ethan turned around slowly, and for the first time all evening, looked genuinely tired in a way that had nothing to do with the nap he’d been dragged out of.

”You want me to actually hit you.”

”I want the truth put on record,” Kael said. ”Properly. So no one else has to walk forty kilometers to learn it.”

Behind the shield’s edge, the small gathered audience — Suresh, a couple of news drones, Director Voss who’d stuck around out of professional obligation, and Ren, who hadn’t moved from her spot all evening — went very still, sensing that whatever came next was going to be the thing everyone actually remembered.

Ethan rubbed both hands down his face, the universal gesture of a man being asked to do overtime.

”Okay,” he said finally. ”But I’m not swinging anything. No sword. No spell. I’m not doing a whole thing. You’re gonna make me actually put in effort and I already told you, I don’t have it in me tonight.”

Kael, to his credit, simply nodded and reset his stance, blade raised, bracing for whatever was about to happen with the calm of a man who’d already decided he could live with the answer.

Ethan looked at him. Looked at the field. Looked, briefly, at the darkening sky, like he was doing quiet math on how much longer this was going to take before he could get back to bed.

Then he exhaled.

It wasn’t dramatic. There was no windup, no gathered energy, no visible buildup of anything resembling a technique. It was just a long, weary breath out through his nose — the exact same sound he made every single time something inconvenient interrupted his day, the sound of a man who had simply run out of patience for the concept of trying.

The air itself didn’t so much move as give way.

Later, when the footage circulated — and it did circulate, within minutes, across every network on the planet — analysts would spend days trying to explain what had actually happened using terms like ”localized atmospheric displacement” and ”unregistered pressure differential,” none of which came anywhere close to capturing what the handful of witnesses actually saw.

Kael Draven, Rank 2, veteran of three solo Calamity clears, simply lifted off the ground.

Not thrown. Not struck. Lifted — the sheer, invisible force of Ethan’s exhale catching him mid-stance and carrying him backward through the air with a speed that turned the surrounding grass flat in a rippling circle, his cloak snapping violently, the Ashcrown Blade wrenched clean out of his grip and left spinning end over end in the dirt behind him.

He didn’t stop at the edge of the field.

He didn’t stop at the edge of the district.

Witnesses three kilometers out reported a faint whistling sound overhead, followed by a distant, distinct thud somewhere past the old highway overpass, followed shortly after by a very confused report to local emergency services about a fully armored man embedded, unharmed but deeply winded, in the side of an abandoned grain silo.

Back at the field, the silence that followed was total.

Ethan straightened up, glanced down at his own hands like he was mildly curious about them, and then looked at the empty stretch of flattened grass where Kael had been standing roughly two seconds earlier.

”...Huh,” he said.

[NOTICE: Combat exchange concluded.]

[Damage dealt: Unknown. The system was unable to track the challenger’s trajectory past the district’s eastern boundary.]

[The system has attempted to calculate the force generated by the subject’s exhale. The calculation has failed. Again. The system would like to formally state that this makes two calculations today that have failed specifically because of things the subject did without trying.]

”I didn’t even do anything,” Ethan said, mostly to himself, still staring at the flattened grass.

[Correct. The subject sighed.]

”I sigh, like, forty times a day.”

[The system is aware. The system has never previously logged a fatality risk associated with any of them. It would like to update its records accordingly.]

Suresh, who’d been watching from just inside the gate with his tablet already buzzing with incoming reports, walked over slowly, expression somewhere between disbelief and the specific exhaustion of a man who managed logistics for someone capable of this.

”He landed in a grain silo,” Suresh reported, reading off the tablet. ”Three kilometers out. Reports say he’s conscious. Confused, but conscious. Local responders are... processing the situation.”

”Is he okay?”

”Physically? Apparently fine. The silo took most of the impact. Emotionally—” Suresh scrolled down, ”—there’s a quote here from a witness. He said, and I’m reading this exactly, ’I understand now. I understand everything now.’”

Ethan winced. ”That’s a lot of understanding for one exhale.”

”It’s trending,” Suresh added, not looking up. ”The clip. Already. Someone’s calling it ’The Sigh Heard Round the World.’”

”Please tell me nobody’s making a mug.”

Suresh checked the tablet again, paused, and set it down with the resigned expression of a man who’d stopped fighting the tide hours ago.

”There’s a mug,” he confirmed.

Ethan closed his eyes and let out another long breath — much shorter this time, carefully controlled, no gathered force behind it, because he’d apparently just learned a very important lesson about breathing near other people.

”Okay,” he said. ”New rule. No more duels. No more challenges. If anyone else shows up wanting to ’test’ anything, tell them the answer is no, and also tell them to check the news before they ask.”

[The system logs this as Official Policy Update #14: No further duels will be entertained. Exception: none, regardless of rank, title, or persistence.]

[The system would also like to note that the Framework’s monitoring logs have registered a sharp, immediate spike in what can only be described as institutional panic following this event.]

[Multiple flagged internal messages have been intercepted between Administrative nodes. One reads, in full: ”It exhaled. It EXHALED. Escalate containment protocols immediately.”]

Ethan, blissfully unaware of the exact wording being used several administrative layers above his pay grade, was already walking back toward the gate, rubbing his eyes.

”I’m going back to bed,” he announced, to no one and everyone. ”If the grain silo guy wants an apology, tell him I said sorry, and also tell him to maybe not walk forty kilometers for stuff like this next time.”

Behind him, out past the shield, past the flattened grass, past the abandoned Ashcrown Blade still lying where it had fallen, the field slowly emptied of the last remaining onlookers — all of them carrying home the same unshakable, freshly recalibrated understanding.

Somewhere out there, Ren remained a moment longer than the rest, staring at the distant smudge of smoke rising faintly from a grain silo three kilometers away, and finally allowed herself a single, quiet, humorless laugh.

”A sigh,” she murmured to no one. ”We nearly died to a sigh.”

Then she, too, turned and walked away, already composing the mental report she had absolutely no idea how to phrase for her superiors.
