Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The days that followed the corruption event tested every hunter guild in the district in ways three weeks of steady, grinding apocalypse never had.

Priya Malhotra hadn’t slept properly in four days. She sat in the Iron Wolves’ makeshift command post, staring at a resource ledger that had gone from cautiously sustainable to genuinely alarming, and did the math one more time in the vain hope it would somehow produce a different answer.

”We’ve lost six healing potions to the last engagement alone,” Arjun reported, voice hoarse from three consecutive shifts he hadn’t been rotated out of. ”Two more fighters down with injuries that would’ve been minor a week ago. The threat scaling isn’t just aggression, Captain — everything’s hitting harder too. Our gear’s not keeping pace.”

”What’s our equipment budget look like?”

”Gone,” Arjun said flatly. ”We spent it all resupplying after the Market Street breach. Whatever we had saved for the next quarter, it’s gone. We’re running on scavenged salvage and whatever the guild treasury’s got left, which isn’t much.”

Priya set down the ledger and rubbed her eyes. Three weeks ago, the Iron Wolves had been one of the district’s most stable, self-sufficient squads — careful resource management, disciplined engagement protocols, a hard-won equilibrium that had let them operate without leaning too heavily on outside support. The corruption event had shattered that equilibrium in less than a week. Monster density up forty percent. Aggression doubled. Every engagement now costing double the resources for the same result, and twice the risk of losing fighters they couldn’t easily replace.

”We need to request support,” she said finally, the words costing her more than she wanted to admit. ”From the sanctuary.”

Arjun looked up. ”Captain, we’ve been running our own supply lines. We haven’t needed to lean that hard on—”

”We do now,” Priya said. ”Everyone does.”

Across the district, the same grim math was playing out in every guild that had spent the past month building careful, sustainable operations. Anika Reyes found herself, for the first time since the apocalypse began, genuinely worried about the Crimson Blade’s long-term viability — not from any single catastrophic loss, but from the slow, grinding attrition of a difficulty curve that had simply refused to level off.

”We’re bleeding resources faster than we can recover them,” she told her lieutenants, staring at a map dotted with red markers indicating breach points that had multiplied over the past four days. ”Every engagement costs more than it used to. Every recovery takes longer. We’re not losing battles, but we’re losing the war of attrition underneath them.”

Meera Kapoor’s Ashen Talon fared even worse, still recovering from the losses they’d taken in the Sunken Vein weeks earlier, now facing a threat environment that had effectively doubled in difficulty before they’d fully rebuilt. She’d started rationing healing supplies among her remaining fighters, a grim, familiar calculation from the apocalypse’s earliest, most desperate days that she’d hoped never to repeat.

Even the government’s forces weren’t immune. General Iyer found himself fielding reports of overextended battalions, supply chains strained past their limits, casualty rates climbing steadily across every containment zone his forces had spent weeks stabilizing.

The entire district’s carefully rebuilt equilibrium — guilds finding their footing, settlements establishing trade routes, ordinary survivors slowly relearning how to live inside an apocalypse that had briefly seemed manageable — had been thrown back into genuine crisis, all at once, by a single global parameter shift nobody had asked for and nobody could explain.

Ethan’s avatar, meanwhile, hadn’t so much as slowed down.

He noticed the disparity almost by accident, scrolling through the avatar feed one evening while half his attention was on dinner, watching his tiny pixel self plow through a dungeon corridor that the system’s own difficulty labels had flagged, in the corner of the display, with a small red marker indicating elevated threat parameters — corruption event active.

The avatar didn’t care. It swung the Void Sword and Frostbrand Cleaver with the exact same brisk, mechanical efficiency it always had, monsters dissolving into loot particles at the same rate they always had, boss encounters resolving in the same handful of seconds they always had.

[NOTE: GLOBAL THREAT SCALING HAS INCREASED MONSTER STATS BY APPROXIMATELY 100%]

[NOTE: AVATAR PERFORMANCE METRICS SHOW NO MEASURABLE CHANGE]

[NOTE: USER’S POWER LEVEL ALREADY EXCEEDED PREVIOUS DIFFICULTY BY SEVERAL ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE]

[NOTE: A 100% INCREASE APPLIED TO ”NEGLIGIBLE” REMAINS ”NEGLIGIBLE”]

”Huh,” Ethan said, mildly interested, setting down his food to actually process what he was reading. ”So this whole corruption thing, whatever it is — it’s basically not doing anything to you at all.”

[CORRECT]

[THE GAP BETWEEN USER’S POWER LEVEL AND THE STANDARD DIFFICULTY CURVE IS SUFFICIENTLY LARGE THAT A DOUBLING OF THAT CURVE REMAINS ENTIRELY WITHIN NEGLIGIBLE THRESHOLD]

[FOR CONTEXT: THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO DOUBLING THE WEIGHT OF A FEATHER]

Ethan sat with that comparison for a moment, and felt something uncomfortable settle in alongside it — not guilt, exactly, but a kind of dawning awareness that the gap between his own effortless existence and everyone else’s genuine, grinding struggle had just widened into something considerably starker than he’d fully appreciated before.

He thought about Priya, hollow-eyed the last time he’d seen her at the supply drop-off, running on too little sleep and too much responsibility. He thought about the settlement market, where trade had slowed noticeably over the past few days as guild resources tightened everywhere at once. He thought about the district’s entire fragile, hard-won stability, now cracking under a burden his own avatar hadn’t even noticed carrying.

”Okay,” he said, setting his phone down with more purpose than he’d shown all evening. ”This isn’t fair.”

[CLARIFY: WHAT IS NOT FAIR]

”All of it. The whole setup. Everyone out there’s grinding themselves into the ground just to keep up with a difficulty curve that doubled overnight, and I’m sitting here eating dinner while my little pixel guy doesn’t even notice the difference.” Ethan stood up, pacing the small living room with genuine agitation, an emotion that looked strange on him, unfamiliar in its intensity. ”That’s not — that’s not right. People are getting hurt because of this. Priya’s people. Anika’s people. Everyone.”

[NOTE: USER HAS PREVIOUSLY DECLINED FORMAL AUTHORITY OVER CONTINENTAL DEFENSE]

[NOTE: USER’S CURRENT REACTION SUGGESTS RECONSIDERATION MAY BE WARRANTED]

”I don’t need a title to help people,” Ethan said, echoing his own words back at Meera Kapoor from days earlier, though the certainty in his voice had shifted into something more urgent than casual dismissal now. ”I just need to figure out what’s actually causing this, and stop it.”

He pulled up the corruption alert again, reading through it properly this time, past the initial shock and into the actual substance of what the system had been trying to tell him.

[WARNING: HIGH-LEVEL CORRUPTION DETECTED]

[SOURCE: UNKNOWN]

[THIS TYPE OF PARAMETER MODIFICATION REQUIRES ADMINISTRATOR-LEVEL ACCESS]

”Administrator-level access,” Ethan read slowly, a new, sharper focus settling into his expression. ”So someone’s actually doing this. On purpose. Not some random glitch.”

[CONFIRMED]

”Then that someone,” Ethan said, already reaching for the Void Sword propped against his wall, ”is about to have a very bad conversation with me.”
