Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The scholars were three days into their excavation, comfortably settled into a routine of cataloguing carvings and arguing about dating methods, when the ground under the district decided to remind everyone that ”ancient” and ”harmless” weren’t the same word.

It started with the streetlights.

Not the ones near the Citadel — those had long since been rerouted through the Void Shield’s power grid, courtesy of the Beast King’s Heart doing double duty as the district’s unofficial utility company. These were three blocks out, in a stretch of half-rebuilt housing that had only recently gotten electricity back, and they flickered in a slow, rolling wave that moved with unmistakable purpose, block by block, toward the excavation site.

Priya noticed it first, standing watch near the dig with a mug of coffee she hadn’t gotten to finish. By the time she radioed it in, the ground itself had started humming — a low, resonant vibration that made the loose gravel around the stairwell entrance skitter sideways in tight, deliberate patterns.

”Ethan,” she said into the radio, already moving toward the excavation team’s tent, ”you should probably come down here. Now, not after lunch.”

He arrived four minutes later, mid-yawn, Void Sword slung over his shoulder out of habit rather than any real sense of urgency — right up until he reached the stairwell and saw the ground around it had cracked open in six new fissures, each one glowing with the same faint gold light as the vault below.

”Okay,” he said, waking up fast. ”That’s new.”

[NOTICE: The system has detected multiple large-scale energy signatures activating simultaneously across the district, all originating from beneath the surface. Depth estimates place them well below the vault the subject already discovered — a separate, wider network the system had not previously mapped.]

[The system would like to note that these signatures share the same architectural fingerprint as the terminal. They are not hostile Framework constructs. They are, as far as the system can tell, part of the same buried system — something that has apparently been dormant this entire time, and has just, for reasons the system cannot yet confirm, decided to wake up.]

Dr. Osei’s team scrambled out of their tent as the fissures widened, more gold light spilling up through cracked pavement across an area that stretched, according to Priya’s frantic radio updates, well beyond the Citadel’s own footprint — out under the settlement market, under three residential blocks, under a stretch of road that hadn’t seen foot traffic in months.

”It’s not just under your building,” Osei said, breathless, staring at a live feed one of her team members had pulled up showing the spreading glow from a drone overhead. ”Mr. Verma, this is — the entire district is sitting on top of it. Whatever’s down there isn’t a single chamber. It’s a city.”

The ground shuddered again, harder this time, and from the largest fissure — right at the excavation site itself — something began to rise.

It emerged slowly, deliberately, stone and bronze shifting apart from what had, moments earlier, looked like solid earth: a humanoid shape roughly nine feet tall, built from the same dark, veined material as the terminal deep in the vault, its surface etched with the same geometric patterns, glowing faintly gold along every seam. It had no face — just a smooth, featureless plate where one should be, not unlike the Arbiter, except older, quieter, moving with a slow, almost mournful stiffness that suggested it hadn’t stood upright in a very long time.

Behind it, three more shapes began pulling themselves free of the ground in different parts of the district, each rising in the same unhurried, patient way.

[NOTICE: Guardian-class constructs detected. Four confirmed, with readings suggesting more remain dormant beneath the district.]

[The system would like to clarify, before the subject reaches for the sword any harder than he already has: these entities do not match the threat profile of anything the Framework has previously deployed. Their energy signature reads as defensive, not offensive. They do not appear to be attacking.]

”They’re just standing there,” Priya said, watching the nearest one from a careful distance, weapon drawn but lowered.

”Yeah,” Ethan agreed slowly, watching the construct’s featureless face tilt toward him with the same unhurried curiosity a guard dog might show a stranger it hadn’t decided about yet. ”They’re just — looking.”

The nearest guardian took a single step forward, its footfall shaking loose dust from the cracked pavement, and spoke — not through sound exactly, but through the same resonant hum the ground had carried moments before, a voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once, old and slow and clearly unused to forming words at all.

”INTRUDER DETECTED,” it said. ”UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO SEALED ARCHIVE.”

Ethan raised an eyebrow. ”Intruder. I live here.”

”USER SIGNATURE UNRECOGNIZED,” the guardian continued, unbothered by the correction. ”REGISTERED USER: ARJUN MEHRA. LAST VERIFIED PRESENCE: [DATA CORRUPTED]. CURRENT SUBJECT DOES NOT MATCH REGISTERED PROFILE.”

”Ah,” Ethan said, understanding landing with the particular weariness of a man realizing he was, once again, being mistaken for someone else’s problem. ”You think I broke into somebody else’s save file.”

[NOTICE: That is, functionally, an accurate summary of the situation.]

[The system would like to add context: these guardians appear to have been built specifically to protect this buried city from anyone who was not Arjun Mehra. They have likely been running that exact protocol, unchanged, since before Earth’s own apocalypse Framework existed. As far as they are concerned, the subject synchronizing with the terminal three days ago registered not as a legitimate succession, but as unauthorized access by an unrecognized party.]

”Great,” Ethan muttered. ”So the ancient security system thinks I’m a burglar.”

The guardian took another slow step forward, and behind it, the other three began advancing as well, their movements gaining speed and purpose with each passing second, the rust of centuries visibly shaking off their joints as whatever dormant protocol governed them finished booting up in full.

”UNAUTHORIZED PRESENCE WILL BE REMOVED,” the nearest one intoned, raising one massive stone arm.

Osei’s team scattered backward toward the safety line. Priya raised her weapon properly this time, stance shifting into something ready for a fight. Ethan, for his part, sighed — the same long, tired, deeply inconvenienced sigh that had once sent a Rank 2 warrior into a grain silo, though this time he was careful, genuinely careful, to keep it shallow.

”Look,” he said, addressing the guardian directly, sword still lowered, ”I get that you’ve got a job to do. I respect that, honestly, more than most of the stuff that’s tried to kill me lately. But your guy — Arjun — he’s gone. Logged out. A long time ago, from what I can tell. Whatever protocol you’re running, it might genuinely be outdated.”

”PROTOCOL DOES NOT EXPIRE,” the guardian said flatly. ”PROTOCOL PERSISTS UNTIL COUNTERMANDED BY REGISTERED USER.”

”He’s not coming to countermand it,” Ethan said. ”That’s kind of the whole problem.”

The guardian paused — an actual pause, its featureless head tilting slightly, as if processing information that genuinely didn’t fit its available parameters.

”REGISTERED USER STATUS: UNCONFIRMED TERMINATION,” it said slowly. ”PROTOCOL CANNOT RESOLVE ABSENCE WITHOUT VERIFIED DATA.”

[NOTICE: The system believes this is the exact same problem it itself has been wrestling with. These guardians are stuck in the same loop the terminal was — unable to confirm what actually happened to Arjun Mehra, and therefore unable to properly stand down.]

Ethan glanced at the sword on his shoulder — Arjun’s sword, apparently, this whole time — and made a decision with the same quick, practical instinct he applied to most things.

”Okay,” he said, stepping forward, raising the blade just enough for the guardian’s sensors, or whatever passed for them, to get a clear look. ”You want proof of succession? Here. This was his. It’s mine now. Has been since day one, whether either of us knew it or not.”

The guardian went very still, its featureless face angled toward the humming, dark-violet blade for a long, silent moment.

Then, all at once, every one of the four risen constructs dropped to one knee simultaneously, the motion rippling outward through the district with a low, resonant groan of stone settling into place, dust rising in a slow cloud around each of them.

”SUCCESSOR SIGNATURE CONFIRMED,” the nearest one intoned, voice quieter now, almost reverent. ”APOLOGIES, INHERITOR. THE CITY HAS BEEN WAITING A VERY LONG TIME.”

Ethan stood there in the middle of a district full of kneeling, nine-foot-tall stone guardians, sword still raised, and felt the weight of that word — inheritor — settle somewhere he didn’t particularly want it to.

”The city,” he repeated slowly. ”You said ’the city.’ As in — there’s more of this than just the vault.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to confirm that the readings support this. The buried architecture beneath the district extends well beyond anything mapped so far — structures, chambers, and systems the scope of which the system genuinely cannot estimate yet.]

[The system would also like to raise one final detail it has just picked up from the kneeling guardian’s own resonant hum — a fragment of old, half-forgotten protocol language that surfaced the moment they recognized the sword.]

[”THE FIRST IDLE KING’S SEAT AWAITS ITS RIGHTFUL HEIR.”]

[The system does not know, yet, whether that phrase is a formality left over from centuries-old code, or a promise this entire buried city fully intends to keep.]
