Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Not everyone had gone home.

By the time evening settled over the district, the crowd outside the Citadel had thinned from fifteen thousand to a few hundred — mostly delegates, a handful of stubborn news crews, and one man who had spent the entire afternoon standing perfectly still at the very edge of the Void Shield’s shimmer, arms crossed, watching the building with the patient, simmering intensity of someone who had traveled a very long way for a very specific reason.

His name was Kael Draven, and until roughly six hours ago, he had been the strongest human being on the planet.

Rank 2, now. A title he’d earned through eleven months of continuous, ruthless grinding — three Calamities soloed, an entire S-rank guild dismantled in a territorial dispute, a reputation built on the simple, brutal fact that nobody who fought him ever needed a rematch. He’d spent almost a year being the answer to the question ”who’s the strongest person alive.”

Then a nineteen-year-old in a bathrobe had answered a balcony full of the planet’s greatest warriors with ”I have breakfast to make,” and the entire hierarchy Kael had spent a year building his identity around had simply — dissolved.

He hadn’t come with the delegation. He’d come alone, on foot, the last forty kilometers, because some things weren’t meant to be settled by envoys.

”I request an audience,” he said, voice carrying easily across the empty field toward the shimmering dome, ”with the one they call Rank One.”

There was a brief pause. Then, from somewhere near the gate, Suresh’s voice — tired, patient, entirely unsurprised — carried back.

”He’s asleep.”

”Then wake him.”

”He specifically told me not to.”

Kael’s jaw tightened. He’d expected resistance. He hadn’t expected scheduling resistance.

”Tell him,” he said, each word deliberate, ”that Kael Draven, formerly Rank One, has come to challenge him. A duel. Honest terms. Let the strongest be proven, not assumed.”

There was a longer pause this time.

Then, faintly, through the shield: ”...he says he’ll consider it after his nap.”

He got his audience two hours later, mostly because Suresh had quietly decided that a man willing to stand motionless at a shield boundary for six straight hours probably wasn’t going to leave on his own, and it would be simpler for everyone if Ethan just dealt with it.

Ethan emerged from the gate in sweatpants and a hoodie, looking exactly like someone who’d been dragged out of a nap against his will, which he had.

”You’re the guy that’s been standing out here since this afternoon,” he said, squinting at Kael in the dim evening light. ”Suresh said you wouldn’t leave.”

”I would not,” Kael confirmed. ”I came to challenge you. Formally. A duel, witnessed, with honest terms — no tricks, no ambushes, no advantage taken of rest or readiness. Let the strength between us be measured openly, so the world can see the truth of it rather than a broken number on a screen.”

Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, glancing over Kael’s stance, his gear, the faint golden aura still radiating off him like heat off asphalt — the unmistakable signature of someone who’d earned every ounce of his power the hard way.

”Look,” Ethan said, not unkindly, ”I appreciate that you walked forty klicks for this. That’s genuinely impressive commitment. But I gotta ask — why?”

Kael’s expression flickered, something raw beneath the composed challenge. ”Because I have spent eleven months being the strongest. I built a name on it. Guilds bent to it. Nations respected it. And in one afternoon, a number that shouldn’t exist erased all of it without you lifting a finger. I need to know if that’s real. I need to know if I lost to something, or if the world simply decided I lost to nothing — a glitch, a rumor, a bathrobe and a mug.”

He said the word mug with genuine, personal offense, like it had cost him something.

Ethan considered that for a long moment. There was something almost sympathetic in the way Kael stood there — not entitled, not arrogant in the way Devraj had been, just a man whose entire sense of self had been quietly dismantled by forces outside his control, standing in a field asking for the dignity of an honest answer.

”Okay,” Ethan said finally. ”One round. You throw whatever you’ve got. I won’t do anything back except block, and then we’re done, and you go get some sleep, because you look like you haven’t in a while.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed, some of the old fire returning. ”You won’t even attack.”

”Didn’t say that.” Ethan shrugged, already turning to walk to a clear stretch of open ground a few meters off. ”Said I won’t do anything back. There’s a difference.”

[NOTICE: A formal duel has been requested and accepted.]

[The system would like to log, for historical accuracy, the full combat resume of the challenger: Kael Draven, formerly Global Rank One, veteran of three solo Calamity clears, holder of the Ashcrown Blade, a weapon forged from the core of a fallen sun-tier construct.]

[The system would also like to note that none of this will matter in approximately four seconds.]

Kael took his stance at the center of the field, the Ashcrown Blade unsheathing with a low, resonant hum that made the air around it shimmer with heat. Golden light gathered along the blade’s edge, condensing into something that had, on three separate documented occasions, ended a Calamity in a single strike.

He didn’t waste time on words. Words were for people who could afford the delay.

He moved.

It was fast — genuinely, legitimately fast, the kind of speed that would’ve turned most hunters into a smear before their bodies registered the attack had started. The blade came down in a diagonal arc aimed to split the air itself, momentum and sun-forged heat compressed into a single devastating strike meant to end the exchange before it truly began.

Ethan didn’t dodge.

He didn’t draw the Void Sword, either. He simply lifted one hand — casual, almost bored, the same motion he’d use to stop a door from swinging shut — and caught the blade between two fingers.

The world went very quiet.

The Ashcrown Blade, a weapon capable of ending Calamities, sat pinched between Ethan’s thumb and forefinger like he’d caught a falling pencil. The golden heat radiating off it didn’t so much as singe his skin. The resonant hum died instantly, the accumulated energy simply... unraveling, dissipating harmlessly into the evening air like it had never been gathered at all.

Kael stood frozen, both hands still locked around the hilt, every muscle straining against a grip that hadn’t moved a single millimeter.

”Okay,” Ethan said, glancing at the blade with mild curiosity. ”That’s actually a nice sword. Good balance.”

He let go.

Kael staggered back half a step from the sheer absence of resistance, nearly losing his footing entirely, chest heaving from an exchange that had lasted less than two seconds and had somehow left him more exhausted than any of his three Calamity fights combined.

Nobody said anything for a long moment. Somewhere behind the shield’s edge, a handful of witnesses — Suresh, a couple of lingering news drones, one very still and very attentive assassin who’d never quite left the field — watched in absolute silence.

Kael lowered the blade slowly, staring at his own hand like it belonged to someone else.

”That’s it,” he said quietly. It wasn’t a question.

”That’s it,” Ethan confirmed. ”You okay?”

Kael didn’t answer immediately. He was too busy processing the fact that eleven months of hard-earned power, the strongest strike he had, the culmination of everything he’d built himself into — had been stopped by two fingers, without so much as disturbing the fabric of Ethan’s hoodie.

”I understand now,” he said finally, voice quieter, steadier than before, like something in him had settled rather than broken. ”The number wasn’t wrong. It was never wrong.”

”Yeah, well.” Ethan shrugged, already turning back toward the gate, done with the whole affair. ”Number’s still annoying either way. Get some rest. You walked forty klicks — that’s the actually impressive part today, not the sword thing.”

Kael watched him go, sheathing the Ashcrown Blade slowly, and for the first time in eleven months, didn’t feel the immediate need to prove anything at all.

[NOTICE: Duel concluded.]

[Combat Log: Zero damage dealt. Zero damage taken. Challenger’s morale — irreparably, if healthily, recalibrated.]

[The system logs this exchange as, statistically, the most anticlimactic Rank 1 title defense in recorded history.]

[The system also logs it as, unofficially, one of its favorites so far.]
