Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

By the time the tea golem had settled into its daily routine — steeping its third perfect cup of the morning while Suresh looked on with quiet, ongoing amazement — the name had already begun spreading well beyond the district that gave birth to it.

It started, as most things involving Ethan did, with an exaggeration that turned out to be more accurate than anyone intended. A trader passing through the settlement market, describing the sanctuary to a cousin in a neighboring sector, had struggled to find the right words for a place where artillery reflected itself, where dragons were blocked by unarmed janitors, where a boy who slept through assassination attempts had somehow also grown a mythical tree and, according to the latest rumor, built a servant made of pure magic whose only job was making tea.

”It’s not a shelter,” the trader had said, shaking his head. ”It’s not a guild hall. It’s something else. Something like — like a temple, except the god living there doesn’t do anything except sleep and eat snacks.”

The phrase stuck. The Citadel of the Lazy God. It moved through trade routes and refugee networks the way all the best stories did, growing a little with every retelling, until within two weeks it had become the sanctuary’s unofficial, and then increasingly official, name across three separate provisional territories.

Director Elena Voss encountered the name for the first time in an intelligence briefing that had, by this point, become a weekly fixture in the Coalition’s schedule — an entire dedicated file simply titled Sector 4 Anomaly, India, thick with satellite imagery, secondhand reports, and increasingly outlandish local folklore that her analysts had learned to sift for genuine signal amid the noise.

”The Citadel of the Lazy God,” she read aloud, flipping through the latest compilation with an expression caught somewhere between professional amusement and genuine disbelief. ”That’s — that’s what they’re calling it now. Officially?”

”Unofficially official, Director,” her lead analyst confirmed. ”The Indian Provisional Government’s own internal communications have started using the term in briefing shorthand. It’s stuck. Given everything else we’ve documented, I don’t think anyone has the appetite to correct it.”

Voss studied the accompanying satellite imagery — the residential block, its sanctuary boundary now visibly marked by a faint shimmer even from orbit, the World Tree’s silver canopy spreading wide enough to be distinguishable from space, the growing sprawl of settlement structures clustered around its protection like moths drawn to the only light left in a darkened world.

”How many people are sheltering there now?”

”Last confirmed count, upward of six hundred. Growing weekly. Local guild leadership — Malhotra, Reyes, Kapoor — have all effectively relocated significant operational infrastructure to the surrounding blocks. The sector’s become something of a de facto capital for the entire southern region, purely on the strength of its safety guarantee.”

”And the individual himself?”

The analyst hesitated, checking her notes with the specific caution reserved for details that never stopped sounding absurd no matter how many times she reported them. ”Reportedly spends most of his time napping, eating, and — this is a new addition to the file, Director — supervising the operation of a magical construct he built specifically to brew tea.”

Voss set down the briefing folder, rubbed her temples, and allowed herself a long, tired laugh that carried more genuine relief than exhaustion. ”A tea golem.”

”A tea golem, Director.”

”The single most powerful being any of us has ever documented,” Voss said, ”protecting six hundred civilians, defeating a Calamity, grounding a mountain-sized monster, and his most recent major project was building a machine to make his tea correctly.”

”That does appear to be an accurate summary, yes.”

Voss closed the folder, shaking her head, and found herself, not for the first time in recent weeks, genuinely grateful for the specific, absurd character of the anomaly her Coalition had spent so much effort trying to understand. ”Update the official designation,” she said finally. ”If the locals want to call it the Citadel of the Lazy God, I see no reason for us to argue with them. It’s more accurate than half the classification names we’ve assigned to actual threats.”

The name reached Ethan himself roughly a week later, delivered by an amused Priya during one of the regular supply drops, who couldn’t quite keep a straight face as she relayed it.

”They’re calling this place what now?” Ethan asked, genuinely confused, looking up from where he’d been supervising his golem’s latest brewing experiment — something involving a new tea blend Anika’s fighters had brought back from a supply run two sectors over.

”The Citadel of the Lazy God,” Priya repeated, biting back a grin. ”It’s official now, more or less. Even the capital’s using it in briefings.”

Ethan considered this for a long moment, weighing the title against the various other names he’d accumulated over the past few months — the Sleeping Guardian, the Trench Warden, Trench Maker, Wave Breaker, Void Walker, Accidental Cataclysm — a growing collection of increasingly dramatic labels attached to a person who had, by his own honest accounting, mostly just been trying to get through each day with as little effort as possible.

”Lazy God,” he said finally, testing the phrase. ”Honestly? Yeah, that one’s pretty accurate. I can work with that.”

”You’re not bothered?” Priya asked, genuinely curious. ”Most people would find that at least a little insulting.”

”Why would I be bothered? It’s literally just describing what I do.” Ethan gestured around the courtyard — at the World Tree’s silver canopy shading a crowd of contentedly resting residents, at the tea golem carrying a fresh cup toward Suresh’s clipboard station, at the quiet, sprawling, hard-won peace that had settled over an entire sector because he’d occasionally bothered to get out of bed. ”I sleep a lot. I like tea. I built a robot to make it for me instead of doing it myself. That’s not an insult, that’s just — accurate reporting.”

Priya laughed, a real, easy laugh that had become considerably more common since the sanctuary’s founding weeks ago, and glanced around the courtyard herself, taking in the same view Ethan had just gestured at. ”I suppose it is,” she admitted. ”Though I don’t think most gods would appreciate the comparison.”

”Most gods probably don’t have a tea golem,” Ethan pointed out. ”I win on that front, at least.”

That evening, as the sun set over the district and the World Tree’s leaves caught the last golden light in a slow, shimmering cascade, Ethan sat on the courtyard steps with a fresh cup of perfectly brewed tea, watching the sanctuary settle into its familiar evening rhythm — children finishing their games, families gathering for shared meals, the soft, contented murmur of hundreds of people who had, against every reasonable expectation three months ago, found somewhere genuinely safe to rebuild their lives.

He thought, briefly, about the strange golden pulse and the disembodied voice from the Divine Realm Simulation, still unresolved, still waiting somewhere in the starlit void his avatar had discovered. He thought about the corruption event, still ongoing, still grinding down guilds and hunters across the district even as his own sanctuary remained an untouched island of calm within it. He thought about all the larger, unanswered questions that still hung over his strange, accidental existence.

Then he took another sip of tea, decided all of that could wait for tomorrow, and settled back against the courtyard steps to watch the sunset properly, utterly content in his role as the laziest, most reluctant, most beloved god the apocalypse had ever produced.
