Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

By the time the sun reached its highest point, the field outside the Citadel’s eastern perimeter no longer looked like a field.

It looked like the staging ground for a war nobody had actually declared.

Banners stretched as far as the shielded dome’s boundary would let anyone stand — ten continental flags at the front, flanked by the personal sigils of guilds that hadn’t been in the same postal code as each other in months, let alone the same crowd. Behind them, rank after rank of hunters in full combat gear, S-ranks and A-ranks and champions who’d survived things that would’ve broken lesser people, all of them standing shoulder to shoulder with a kind of nervous, electric discipline.

Someone, somewhere in the back, had brought a drone with a livestream rig. Someone else had a banner reading THE UNDEFINED, SHOW YOURSELF, which was, at minimum, an improvement over the mug.

Priya stood near the sanctuary’s inner gate, watching the crowd swell by the minute, and did the math in her head with rising dread.

”That’s not thousands anymore,” she said quietly to Suresh, who’d joined her at the gate with a tablet full of live headcount estimates. ”That’s got to be five figures.”

”Fourteen thousand, according to the last drone sweep,” Suresh said, not looking up. ”Give or take. The number’s climbing roughly every ten minutes.”

”Fourteen thousand of the strongest people on the planet,” Priya said, ”standing outside his kitchen window.”

”Technically outside the shield perimeter,” Suresh corrected mildly. ”But yes. Close enough that he can probably hear them.”

He could. Inside Room 404, Ethan sat at his kitchen table — the leg had finally been replaced, courtesy of a very patient carpenter refugee named Farid who’d taken one look at the droid-scorched floor and decided not to ask questions — eating cereal with the specific, deliberate slowness of a man ignoring a problem on principle.

The low roar of fourteen thousand voices filtered faintly through the Void Shield’s dampening field, muffled into something like distant surf.

[NOTICE: Crowd size outside the sanctuary perimeter has reached approximately 14,600 individuals and is still climbing.]

[The system estimates, conservatively, that this represents the single largest concentration of high-tier combat power assembled in one location since the apocalypse began. For context: this crowd could, theoretically, level a mid-sized city in under ten minutes if provoked.]

[The system would like to reiterate that the subject is currently eating cereal.]

”It’s good cereal,” Ethan said, spoon halfway to his mouth. ”I’m not rushing it.”

[Understood. The system will inform the fourteen thousand armed individuals outside that they should wait for the cereal.]

”Great. Thanks.”

Suresh appeared in the doorway a moment later, tablet still in hand, wearing the expression of a man who’d genuinely run out of ways to say this is getting worse.

”They’re not leaving,” he said. ”And they’re not staying quiet, either. There’s chanting.”

”Chanting what?”

Suresh checked the tablet, grimaced slightly, and read it out in the flattest voice he could manage. ”’Show yourself, Rank One.’”

Ethan set his spoon down. ”That’s not even catchy.”

”There’s also a smaller group chanting something about the mug.”

”The mug—” Ethan pressed both hands over his face. ”The mug has a fanbase now?”

”The mug,” Suresh confirmed, ”has a fanbase now.”

Outside, near the front of the crowd, Director Voss stood with the assembled continental delegation, watching the shimmer of the Void Shield ripple faintly under the weight of fourteen thousand people’s collective anxiety, and privately wondered whether unifying ten guild factions had been the easy part.

”This wasn’t the plan,” Hall muttered beside her, arms crossed, jaw tight. ”The plan was a controlled envoy. Ten representatives. Quiet, diplomatic, contained.”

”Word travels,” Voss said simply. ”You can’t unify ten continental factions in secret. Someone always talks.”

”Someone always talks,” Hall repeated, watching another wave of hunters arrive at the crowd’s edges — a fresh contingent bearing the sigil of a South American guild that hadn’t even been on the original delegation list. ”This isn’t a delegation anymore, Elena. This is a pilgrimage.”

He wasn’t wrong. What had started as ten careful envoys had metastasized, within hours, into every ambitious S-rank, every skeptical government official, and every curious civilian with enough clearance to get near the perimeter — all of them drawn by the same impossible readout still glowing faintly in the sky above the district.

Near the very front, close enough to the shimmer of the shield that she could feel the faint hum of it against her skin, stood a woman most of the crowd gave a wide, respectful berth to. Tall, composed, wearing the black-and-gold insignia of a guild that didn’t officially exist on any continental registry — because the Kuroyuki Order had never needed one.

Ren hadn’t been invited. She’d come anyway.

Beside her, one of her remaining lieutenants — the squad that hadn’t been assigned to the failed Room 404 infiltration and therefore still had all their limbs functioning correctly — leaned in and murmured something in a low, uncertain tone.

”You want to try again.”

It wasn’t a question. Ren didn’t answer it directly.

”I want to understand,” she said instead, eyes fixed on the shimmering dome. ”The last time we entered that building, four operatives were neutralized before any of them registered contact. Not injured. Neutralized. Cleanly. Without him waking up.” She paused. ”I have spent every night since trying to work out how that is possible. I would like an answer more than I would like a rematch.”

Her lieutenant said nothing to that. There wasn’t much to say.

Further back in the crowd, closer to where the news drones hovered, a young hunter — barely past his registration, wearing the crest of a minor European guild — turned to the veteran beside him with wide eyes.

”Is it true he beat an SSS-rank Calamity during his lunch break?”

The veteran, a scarred woman who’d survived three separate Calamity events and buried most of her original squad doing it, didn’t even look over.

”Kid,” she said, ”I’ve stopped asking what’s true about him. I just believe whatever sounds most inconvenient for the rest of us. That’s usually correct.”

Back inside the Citadel, Ethan had finally finished his cereal, rinsed the bowl, and was now standing at the window of his apartment, looking down at the ocean of banners and armor and hopeful, anxious faces stretching out toward the horizon.

He didn’t look impressed. He didn’t look afraid, either. Mostly, he looked like a man surveying a very large, very inconvenient traffic jam that had somehow formed directly outside his front door.

”That’s a lot of people,” he said.

[Current estimate: 15,200 and climbing. The system notes this figure now exceeds the population of several pre-apocalypse towns.]

”They’re gonna want a whole speech, aren’t they.”

[Historically, gatherings of this scale and composition tend to expect some form of address, yes.]

Ethan sighed — long, put-upon, the exact sigh of a man being asked to attend a work meeting on his day off — and rubbed the back of his neck.

”Fine,” he said. ”Fine. I’ll deal with it. But I’m doing it in my own time, my own clothes, and if anyone starts chanting about the mug while I’m talking, I’m going straight back to bed. No negotiation.”

[The system logs this as an official, non-negotiable term of engagement.]

[The system would also like to note, quietly, that the Framework’s own analysts are currently monitoring this exact conversation, and have logged the subject’s response with the internal tag: ”concerning lack of appropriate awe.”]

[The system agrees with the tag. It has simply stopped being surprised by it.]

Outside, the crowd’s chanting rose another notch as a rumor rippled through fifteen thousand people simultaneously — he’s coming to the window, someone saw movement — and for one collective, breathless moment, the entire gathered might of humanity’s strongest survivors held still, waiting.

Ethan closed the curtain and went to go find a shirt that didn’t have cereal on it.
