Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Word travels fast when your building has a secret basement full of ancient technology and a golden vault that apparently predates the concept of apocalypses in the first place. By the next morning, the Coalition had a team on the way, and by noon, they were standing in Ethan’s courtyard looking a lot more excited than he currently had the energy for.

”Dr. Amara Osei,” the woman at the front of the small delegation said, extending a hand Ethan shook mostly out of politeness. ”Coalition Archaeological Division. We flew in the moment Director Voss’s office flagged the report. I have to say, Mr. Verma, this is — genuinely, this is the discovery of the century. Possibly several centuries.”

”Cool,” Ethan said, glancing past her shoulder toward the excavated stairwell, where two more scholars were already unpacking equipment with the particular reverence people usually reserved for religious relics. ”Is one of you gonna check if the vending machine on the second floor still works? Because it’s been out since the Framework’s droids trashed the power lines last week, and honestly that feels more urgent than the ancient basement at this point.”

Dr. Osei blinked. ”The... vending machine.”

”It had good chips,” Ethan said. ”Genuinely good chips. I don’t want to lose that just because everyone’s suddenly obsessed with the golden throne room.”

Suresh, standing a few steps back with the tolerant patience of a man who managed exactly these kinds of conversations for a living now, made a small note on his clipboard without comment.

Dr. Osei recovered admirably fast, in the way that people who’d spent months studying Ethan’s reports learned to. ”I’ll — have someone look into the vending machine. But Mr. Verma, if I could just ask — do you understand what you’ve found down there? The architecture alone predates every recorded civilization on this planet. If the terminal’s claims are accurate, there is an entire multiversal precedent for your own power, a predecessor user, potentially an entire lost governing structure sitting under your courtyard—”

”Yeah, I heard the pitch already,” Ethan said, not unkindly. ”From my own system. It’s a lot. I get it. I’m just not sure what you want me to do about it right now, today, before lunch.”

”We’d like to study it,” Osei said. ”Properly. A full excavation team, historians, linguists — this could change everything we understand about how this apocalypse system originated. It could tell us why it exists at all.”

Ethan considered that for a moment, genuinely considered it, because unlike most of the recruitment pitches he’d fielded over the past several months, this one wasn’t asking him to lead anything or fight anything or wear a crown. It was just asking for information. That, at least, felt reasonable.

”Okay, here’s the deal,” he said. ”You can study the outer chamber. The stairs, the console room, whatever’s not actively glowing in a way that makes my sword nervous. You do not touch the inner vault without me there. That terminal reacted to me specifically — I’m not about to find out what it does if a stranger walks in and starts poking at it without permission.”

Osei’s team exchanged a quick, professionally restrained glance of excitement. ”That’s more than reasonable, Mr. Verma. Thank you.”

”And,” Ethan added, holding up a finger, ”nobody touches, moves, or removes anything without checking with me or Suresh first. I don’t care how many degrees you’ve got. I’ve had enough surprises out of that basement for one lifetime.”

”Understood.”

”I care about my building not getting robbed by well-meaning academics,” Ethan muttered under his breath, mostly for the system’s benefit. ”That’s different.”

The scholars set up over the next several hours with the kind of focused, reverent energy that reminded Ethan uncomfortably of the crowd that had once gathered outside demanding an audience — except this time, at least, they weren’t holding banners with his face on them.

He wandered down periodically, mostly out of a lingering, low-grade curiosity he refused to fully admit to, and mostly found the researchers cataloguing the outer chamber’s carvings, photographing the console, arguing quietly among themselves about dating methods that clearly weren’t producing consistent answers.

”The carbon dating’s inconsistent with the material composition,” one of the younger researchers was saying, mostly to herself, when Ethan leaned in the doorway to listen. ”It’s like the stone is simultaneously thousands of years old and — this doesn’t make sense — also somehow newer than the building above it.”

”Time doesn’t necessarily behave normally around Framework-adjacent architecture,” another scholar offered. ”We’ve seen similar inconsistencies around dungeon cores.”

”This isn’t Framework architecture, though. That’s the whole point. It predates the Framework.”

Ethan, listening from the doorway, felt his patience for academic debate reach its natural limit somewhere around minute four.

”Not that this isn’t fascinating,” he said, stepping into the room, ”but has anyone actually figured out anything useful? Like, practically useful? Because I’ve got six hundred people upstairs who’d probably appreciate knowing if there’s an actual threat down here or if it’s just, you know, old and weird.”

Dr. Osei looked up from a set of notes, expression carefully neutral in the way academics got when they didn’t want to admit they didn’t have a full answer yet.

”We believe,” she said carefully, ”that this site represents what we’re calling a Progenitor Instance — essentially, evidence that the apocalypse system governing Earth, and apparently every other Instance out there, wasn’t independently created for each world. It was seeded. Deployed. Possibly by whoever or whatever built that terminal down there originally.”

”So somebody built this whole apocalypse thing on purpose,” Ethan said flatly. ”Not the Framework. Something before the Framework.”

”That’s our working theory, yes.”

”Great,” Ethan said. ”So the actual people responsible for ruining my life for the past several months aren’t even the ones I’ve already yelled at. There’s a whole other, older group of them somewhere.”

”That does appear to be the implication, yes.”

Ethan rubbed his face with both hands, the universal gesture that had, by this point in the story, become something close to a personal catchphrase.

”Okay,” he said. ”Fine. Study your ruins. Figure out your theories. Just — keep me updated if anything actually matters, and somebody please, genuinely, fix the vending machine.”

He turned to leave, and had nearly made it back to the stairwell when one of the researchers, a quieter man who’d been working silently in the corner of the room the entire time, cleared his throat.

”Mr. Verma,” he said. ”There’s — one thing you should probably see. Before you go.”

Ethan turned back, already tired, already bracing for another wall of academic caveats.

Instead, the researcher simply held up a small, cracked fragment of carved stone he’d extracted from a section of the outer chamber’s wall — a piece that, once cleaned of centuries of dust, revealed a faint, weathered engraving.

It was a symbol. Simple. A circle, half-filled with dark, half-filled with light, split by a single jagged line down the middle — and Ethan recognized it immediately, because it was the exact same mark that had appeared, faintly glowing, on the surface of the Void Sword the very first day it landed in his hands, back before any of this had a name.

”This engraving is repeated throughout the entire chamber,” the researcher said quietly. ”We found seventeen instances so far. It’s not decorative. It’s structural — it appears in every load-bearing section of the architecture, like it was carved into the foundation on purpose.”

Ethan stared at the fragment for a long moment, the familiar shape sitting uneasily in his chest.

”That’s the mark on my sword,” he said slowly. ”It’s been on the hilt since day one. I never figured out what it meant.”

[NOTICE: The system has cross-referenced this symbol against every archive it currently has access to, including the terminal’s newly unlocked data.]

[It has found exactly one match.]

[It is not a decoration. It is not a Framework insignia. It is, according to the terminal’s archive, a signature — the personal mark Arjun Mehra’s own system used to identify itself, back when it was still active, centuries before it was ever assigned to anyone named Ethan Verma.]

Ethan looked down at his own hand, at the faint, familiar weight of the Void Sword resting against his shoulder, and felt the uneasy, tightening realization settle in that this had never really been a coincidence at all.

”So the sword’s not just a weapon,” he said quietly. ”It’s his. It was his the whole time.”

[The system does not currently have confirmation of how, exactly, an item belonging to a user who logged out permanently, potentially off-world, centuries ago ended up in the subject’s hands on the very first day of Earth’s apocalypse.]

[The system considers this the single most important unanswered question in the entire investigation so far.]
