Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Ethan woke up the next morning and checked his phone before he’d even properly opened his eyes, a small, nagging curiosity about the golden light and the strange, disembodied message pulling him out of sleep faster than usual.

The avatar feed showed the same starlit void from the night before, his tiny pixel self still standing at the base of the ancient, unclassifiable structure, motionless. The golden pulse had faded entirely. No new messages had appeared.

[STATUS UPDATE]

[NO FURTHER CONTACT DETECTED]

[STRUCTURE REMAINS DORMANT]

[AVATAR STATUS: IDLE, AWAITING FURTHER INPUT]

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM RECOMMENDS PATIENCE]

”Patience,” Ethan repeated, rubbing his eyes. ”Yeah, okay. Not going anywhere, apparently. Guess we wait.”

He set the phone aside, mildly reassured that whatever had spoken to his avatar didn’t seem inclined to escalate things overnight, and let the whole matter settle into the same comfortable back-burner status he applied to most looming, unresolved problems. It would still be there tomorrow. Today had other priorities — namely, the fact that his morning tea, brewed the old-fashioned way in a chipped kettle Suresh had salvaged weeks ago, had once again come out slightly too weak, slightly too cool, and generally unworthy of the effort Ethan had put into standing up to make it.

”This is genuinely unacceptable,” he announced to his empty kitchen, staring down at the lukewarm cup with real disappointment. ”I have gravity manipulation. I have a sword that erases armies. And I still can’t make a decent cup of tea.”

He’d tried, over the past few weeks, to leave the tea-making to the void inventory’s temporal stasis trick — brewing a large batch once and pulling out perfectly preserved cups whenever he wanted one — but something about tea specifically resisted the workaround. Stored tea, pulled back out hours later, tasted exactly as good as it had when stored, which was fine in theory except Ethan’s brewing technique itself had never been reliable enough to produce a ”good” batch worth preserving in the first place. The problem, he’d finally concluded, wasn’t storage. It was that he was, categorically, bad at making tea.

The solution arrived to him while scrolling through his void inventory later that morning, searching halfheartedly for something else entirely, when he stumbled across a cluster of items he’d forgotten he even had — a set of runic cores, salvaged weeks ago from some forgotten dungeon clear, sitting alongside several of the crafting tomes he’d absorbed during the great library sweep.

[ITEM: ANIMATION CORE (LEGENDARY)]

[EFFECT: SERVES AS THE FOUNDATIONAL ENERGY SOURCE FOR CONSTRUCT-CLASS GOLEMS]

[NOTE: TYPICALLY REQUIRES DECADES OF RUNIC ENGINEERING STUDY TO SAFELY INTEGRATE]

Ethan stared at the entry for a long moment, an idea forming with the specific, focused clarity he usually reserved for solving genuinely pressing problems.

”A golem,” he said slowly. ”I could build a golem. To make tea.”

[NOTE: CONSTRUCT-CLASS GOLEMS ARE TYPICALLY DESIGNED FOR LABOR, COMBAT, OR GUARDIAN DUTIES]

[NOTE: USER’S PROPOSED APPLICATION IS UNPRECEDENTED]

”Unprecedented is my whole thing at this point,” Ethan said, already pulling up the crafting menu, scrolling through the absorbed knowledge from the Grandmaster tomes he’d swept up weeks earlier — a section labeled Construct Theory and Applied Golemancy that he’d genuinely never bothered opening until this exact moment.

The knowledge, once accessed, unfolded in his mind with the same effortless clarity every absorbed tome had provided — an entire discipline of runic engineering, golem cores, animation matrices, and behavioral programming that would have taken most practitioners a lifetime to master, settling into his understanding like a fact he’d simply never gotten around to using.

”Okay,” he said, cracking his knuckles with genuine enthusiasm for the first time in days. ”Let’s build a tea golem.”

He spent the rest of the morning in a state of focused, uncharacteristic productivity, dragging materials out of his void inventory and arranging them across his living room floor — the Animation Core at the center, surrounded by a scattering of Voidforged alloy scraps left over from his earlier trading sprees, several monster cores he’d never found a use for, and, at Suresh’s insistence once the old man wandered up to check on the commotion, an actual proper kettle salvaged from somewhere in the sanctuary’s growing supply stores.

”You’re building a machine,” Suresh said, watching Ethan arrange the components with a focus he rarely displayed for anything, ”to make tea.”

”A golem,” Ethan corrected. ”Not a machine. A golem. There’s a difference.”

”What is the difference?”

”The golem has better taste,” Ethan said, without looking up from his work.

He assembled the frame first — a compact, humanoid shape roughly three feet tall, built from the salvaged alloy plates and reinforced with a lattice of runic script he inscribed freehand, the knowledge from the absorbed tomes guiding his hands with a precision that would have astonished any actual golemancer watching. Suresh, admittedly, watched with exactly that astonishment, offering the occasional word of practical, non-magical advice — ”perhaps give it proper feet, beta, so it does not simply fall over” — that Ethan incorporated without complaint.

The Animation Core went in last, settled carefully into a housing built into the golem’s chest, surrounded by the monster cores arranged in a pattern the absorbed knowledge insisted would optimize for ”precision task execution” over raw combat capability.

[CONSTRUCT ASSEMBLY: COMPLETE]

[ANIMATION CORE: INTEGRATED]

[BEHAVIORAL PARAMETERS: AWAITING PROGRAMMING]

[SUGGESTED FUNCTION?]

”Make perfect tea,” Ethan said, without hesitation. ”Every time. Exactly the right temperature, exactly the right steep time, and remember how I like it so I never have to explain it twice.”

[PROGRAMMING COMPLETE]

[ACTIVATE CONSTRUCT?]

”Activate it.”

The golem’s chest flared with a soft, steady blue light, runic script along its frame igniting in sequence, and its previously inert form shuddered once, twice, before straightening into a smooth, deliberate posture that looked, disconcertingly, almost dignified. Its head — a simple, faceless dome of alloy — tilted slightly, taking in the room, and then, without further prompting, it turned toward the kitchen and began moving with a slow, careful gait toward the stovetop.

”Oh, it’s actually doing it,” Ethan said, genuinely delighted, following close behind. ”Look at it go.”

The golem retrieved the kettle, filled it with practiced, unhurried precision, and set it over the burner with a care that suggested the absorbed golemancy knowledge had, somewhere in its construction, also picked up a genuine appreciation for craft. It waited, motionless, monitoring the water with some internal sense Ethan couldn’t quite perceive, and the moment it reached whatever precise temperature its programming demanded, it removed the kettle and began the steeping process with a measured, patient timing that no human hand — certainly not Ethan’s — had ever managed to replicate.

Four minutes later, it presented Ethan with a steaming cup, held out in both alloy hands with something that looked, absurdly, like pride.

Ethan took a sip.

It was, without any exaggeration, the best cup of tea he had ever tasted — perfectly balanced, exactly the right warmth, steeped for precisely the right duration to bring out flavor without any trace of bitterness.

”Suresh,” Ethan said, voice thick with genuine emotion, ”this might be the single greatest thing I’ve ever built.”

Suresh, watching the small golem stand patiently beside the stove, already beginning to prepare a second cup without being asked, allowed himself a small, fond smile.

”Beta,” he said, ”you cured an entire district’s food shortage with a snap of your fingers, and grew a mythical tree that purifies the air for kilometers around. But I think you might be right. This might genuinely be your finest work.”
