Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The Framework’s engineers — if ”engineers” was even the right word for whatever administrative intelligences ran the machinery behind reality’s new operating system — had never had a calculation simply refuse to finish.

They had that now.

Deep inside the Administrative Framework’s central processing core, in a layer of the apocalypse’s architecture no human would ever see, a resolution request for Combat Power: ETHAN VERMA had been running continuously since the leaderboard broadcast. It had not stopped. It had not errored out cleanly. It had simply kept counting, tier after tier, threshold after threshold, blowing through every ceiling the system had ever built to contain a number.

[Recalculation Attempt #14,207: FAILED.]

[Recalculation Attempt #14,208: FAILED.]

[Recalculation Attempt #14,209: —]

The counter didn’t fail this time. It just kept going, digits scrolling faster than any human eye could track, climbing past values that had names, past values that had scientific notation, into a blur of numerals that eventually stopped looking like a number at all and started looking like static.

Then the display did something it had never done before in the recorded history of the apocalypse.

It broke.

Across the planet, every screen showing the leaderboard flickered at the exact same instant. Reporters mid-broadcast lost their feeds. Guild command centers watched their monitors stutter, refresh, stutter again. And where Rank 1’s power level had been sitting as a patient, glitching question mark, the readout now unspooled into an endless cascade of numbers — nines, then more nines, then symbols that weren’t numbers at all, streaming down every public display on the planet like a waterfall no one had asked for.

In the Coalition’s command center, Director Voss watched the wall of monitors dissolve into scrolling chaos and felt her coffee go cold in her hand without ever having taken a sip.

”Talk to me,” she said.

The lead analyst — a woman named Chandrasekhar who had, up until four minutes ago, considered herself very good at her job — didn’t look away from her screen. ”The calculation isn’t failing anymore, ma’am. It’s succeeding. It’s just... not stopping.”

”Explain that.”

”The system finally managed to resolve his combat power,” Chandrasekhar said, voice thin. ”The number is real. It’s just too large to display in any format we have. We’re looking at digit overflow across every registered unit type simultaneously. Strength, defense, magic resistance, spatial affinity — all of them hit the ceiling at once and the system just kept counting past it.”

General Iyer, standing at the back of the room with his arms crossed, made a sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a wince. ”So the system asked the universe how strong this kid is, and the universe said ’yes.’”

Nobody corrected him. Nobody could.

On the main screen, the cascade finally slowed, stuttered, and settled — not into a number, but into a single line of text that every device on the planet displayed identically, as if the Framework itself had simply given up trying to be precise about it.

ETHAN VERMA — TOTAL COMBAT POWER: [ERROR: VALUE EXCEEDS ALL DEFINED PARAMETERS]

Beneath it, smaller, almost apologetic:

Ranking retained at Position 1. Recalculation suspended indefinitely.

In the Citadel’s courtyard, under the shade of the World Tree fragment, Suresh watched the same message resolve on his own borrowed tablet and slowly lowered it.

”Ethan,” he called, not particularly loudly, because he’d learned that shouting rarely sped anything up. ”You should see this.”

Ethan was sitting cross-legged on a low bench nearby with a cup of tea balanced on his knee, watching the tea golem carefully water the World Tree sapling with the kind of concentration usually reserved for bomb disposal. He glanced over, mildly annoyed at the interruption, and took the tablet when Suresh held it out.

He read the message. Blinked. Read it again.

”They tried to give me a number,” he said slowly, ”and it broke.”

”That’s the official read, yes,” Suresh said.

”The number broke the sky.”

”Also correct.”

Ethan handed the tablet back with the same expression he’d give a waiter who’d brought him the wrong order — not angry, just deeply, personally inconvenienced.

”This is so much worse than the leaderboard thing,” he said. ”At least a rank is just a rank. Now people are gonna think I’m, like, unbeatable.”

Suresh, who had personally watched Ethan reflect an artillery barrage using nothing but standing there, tilted his head. ”You are unbeatable.”

”That’s not the point,” Ethan said, gesturing vaguely with his teacup, some of it sloshing dangerously close to the rim. ”The point is now everyone’s gonna have opinions about it. People with opinions show up. People who show up want to talk. Talking takes time. Time I could be spending napping.”

[The system feels compelled to interject.]

[NOTICE: The subject’s combat power has, in fact, exceeded every measurement tier the Framework has ever built, including several tiers that were only theoretical until forty minutes ago. The system attempted to explain this diplomatically. It failed. It would now like to try again, more bluntly: You broke math.]

Ethan glanced up at the empty air, unimpressed. ”I didn’t break anything. I took a nap. You’re the one that keeps counting.”

[The system would like the record to reflect that it did try to stop counting. Several times. The number would not stop generating itself. This has never happened before. The system does not have a protocol for a stat that refuses to finish existing.]

”Sounds like a you problem.”

[The system logs this as, unfortunately, an accurate assessment of the situation.]

Suresh, watching this exchange with the long-suffering patience of a man who had stopped being surprised by anything roughly around the time a janitor’s overcoat turned out to be dragon-proof, cleared his throat gently.

”There’s a slightly more pressing issue,” he said. ”The eastern crowd has roughly tripled in the last twenty minutes. People are calling it ’The Undefined.’ There’s already a banner.”

Ethan groaned and let his head tip back against the tree trunk. ”A banner. For me. With a made-up name.”

”’The Undefined, Rank Above All,’” Suresh read off his tablet, in the flat tone of a man reading a menu he found personally offensive on Ethan’s behalf. ”Someone’s selling merchandise already. There’s a mug.”

”There’s a—” Ethan sat up straight. ”A mug?”

”With your face on it. Roughly your face. The artist took some liberties.”

Ethan stared at the tablet like it had personally wronged him, which, in a roundabout way, it had.

”Okay, that’s it,” he said, standing up, tea sloshing precariously as he did. ”I need to see this mug before I decide how mad I am.”

[The system logs the subject’s priorities for the day: 1) See the mug. 2) Possibly address the crowd of several thousand armed strangers currently gathering outside the sanctuary demanding answers about an unmeasurable stat overflow. 3) Finish the tea.]

[The system notes, with something resembling fondness, that this order is unlikely to change.]

Above the Citadel, the sky still bore the faint, lingering afterglow of a number too large to exist — a single unresolved line of text hovering over the entire district like a permanent asterisk on reality itself, visible to every satellite, every phone, every terrified analyst still trying to make sense of what ”exceeds all defined parameters” actually meant in practical terms.

Ethan walked past it without looking up, more concerned with tracking down a badly drawn mug of his own face than with the fact that he had just, mathematically speaking, become something the universe had no word for.
