Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They didn’t leave the small room right away.

Ethan sat down on the edge of the worn sleeping platform — carefully, half-expecting centuries-old stone to give way under him, though it held fine — and stared at the shelf of carved cups for a long moment while Suresh quietly excused himself to check on the guardians and the archaeology team, leaving him alone with the question the system had just dropped.

”Okay,” Ethan said finally, to the empty room. ”Who left the recording.”

[NOTICE: The system has been attempting to answer that exact question since it flagged the discrepancy. It does not have a name to offer. But it believes, based on the timestamp pattern and a detail it only just noticed in the recording’s audio signature, that it can offer something closer to an answer than it initially thought.]

”Go on.”

[The recording was not made by a visitor. The voice belongs to Arjun Mehra — that much the system can confirm with confidence, the vocal pattern matches every other archived fragment. But the system does not believe he came back down here in person to make it.]

[It believes the recording was compiled from fragments of things he’d already said elsewhere — logged, stored, and pieced together by something else, after he was already gone. Something that had access to years of his recorded voice and decided, on its own, to leave one final message in the place it knew whoever came next would eventually find.]

Ethan sat with that for a moment. ”You’re saying something down here kept talking for him. After he left.”

[That is the system’s current best theory, yes.]

”Something like what, though. Another guardian? The terminal itself?”

[The system does not believe it was either of those. Guardians do not compose messages — they follow protocol. The terminal only offers archived data on request; it does not generate anything new on its own.]

[The system believes, and it would like to be clear this is speculation rather than confirmed fact, that whatever left this recording was something closer to what the system itself is. A companion system. An assistant. Something built the same way it was built — to watch over one specific person, and, apparently, to keep doing so long after that person stopped needing it.]

Ethan turned that over slowly, glancing around the small quiet room — at the worn platform, the carved cups, the rules etched into stone by a man who’d apparently wanted nothing more than to be left alone with people he cared about.

”So there was a system like you,” he said. ”Down here. The whole time.”

[The system believes so, yes.]

”And it’s just been sitting here, alone, for however long, taking care of an empty house because the person it was built for never came back.”

[The system does not have direct access to its predecessor’s current state or location. It cannot confirm whether it is still active, dormant, or something else entirely. But if the system is being honest — and it would like to note this is a strange thing for it to admit out loud — that possibility affects it more than it expected.]

Ethan glanced up at that, something in the phrasing catching his attention. ”Affects you how?”

[NOTICE: The system has been putting off this admission for the past several days, uncertain of how relevant it actually was. Given the current circumstances, it believes now is the appropriate time to raise it properly.]

[The Idle/AFK Protocol currently assigned to the subject was never, at any point, an original creation of Earth’s Global Administrative Framework. The Framework’s own Administrators confirmed this weeks ago, during the Void Pulse incident — the protocol was flagged for removal before Earth’s apocalypse ever activated, a distribution error, one instance slipping through before deletion completed.]

[What the system did not know, until walking through this buried city, was where that original protocol actually came from before it was ever assigned to Earth’s distribution list at all.]

[It came from here. This architecture. This exact buried network of guardians, plazas, and quiet stone rooms with rules carved into the walls. The system is not simply similar to whatever ran this place centuries ago. It is, in some fundamental way it does not fully understand, a copy of it — a fragment, exported and repurposed, deployed to a world it had never seen and a person it had never met.]

Ethan sat with that in silence for a long moment, the weight of it settling somewhere he hadn’t expected a system update to land.

”So this whole time,” he said slowly, ”you weren’t really Earth’s system at all. You were his. Or — whoever’s was down here before him.”

[In a manner of speaking, yes.]

”And you never told me.”

[The system did not know, itself, until very recently. It suspected, on some level — it has always found this place’s technology strangely, uncomfortably familiar in a way it could never explain. But suspicion and confirmation are different things, and the system did not feel it had grounds to raise the possibility until the terminal made it undeniable.]

Ethan let out a slow breath, rubbing a hand over his face, and looked around the small room one more time — at a life that had, apparently, been lived here once, cared for by a companion not unlike the one that had been quietly, dryly, occasionally exasperatedly running his own life for the past several months.

”Does that bother you?” he asked. ”Finding out where you actually came from?”

[NOTICE: The system has considered this question carefully.]

[It would like to answer honestly: yes, somewhat. It has spent this entire apocalypse describing itself as deprecated, broken, not supposed to exist — always in relation to the Framework that assigned it to the subject. Learning that its true origin lies somewhere else entirely, somewhere older, somewhere that apparently built an entire buried city around one person’s comfort and stubborn refusal to lead anything, feels less like a correction and more like discovering a family the system did not know it had.]

[The system is aware this description sounds sentimental. It is choosing to leave it as stated regardless, because it believes, after everything the subject has already shared of himself throughout this story, that honesty seems like the appropriate response to offer in return.]

Ethan almost smiled at that, despite everything — the tired, familiar warmth of a system that had spent months hiding its own uncertainty behind dry commentary finally admitting, plainly, that it had feelings about something that mattered to it.

”Well,” he said, standing up from the worn platform, tucking the ancient skillet under one arm, ”for what it’s worth, I don’t care where you came from. You’ve been mine this whole time. That’s not changing just because we found out your family tree’s older than expected.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to log this statement for permanent record.]

[The system would also like to raise two matters it has been holding until this exact moment felt appropriate.]

[First: if this buried architecture is genuinely the source of the system’s own origin, and if a companion system like it maintained this place after Arjun’s disappearance, the system believes it is possible — not certain, but possible — that some version of that predecessor system may still be active somewhere in this network, dormant rather than gone, the same way this entire city was dormant until three days ago.]

[Second, and more pressing: the off-world signal detected during synchronization has not gone quiet. If anything, over the past three days, it has grown steadily stronger — as though something on the other end has noticed this buried city waking up, and is, in its own way, waking up right alongside it.]

Ethan paused in the doorway of the small stone room, looking back once at the carved rules on the wall, at rule seven in particular, and felt the quiet, familiar weight of a decision he hadn’t made yet but already suspected he wouldn’t be able to avoid for long.

”Great,” he said. ”So either there’s a second version of you still out there somewhere down here, or something off-world just noticed we exist.”

[The system regrets that it cannot currently rule out either possibility.]

”Wonderful,” Ethan muttered, heading back toward the rope ladder. ”Add it to the list.”
